You people all seem to think that you can sit there

You and I have ever fought, and there are probably many more who can say that, so could you lay off the "You people" bit?

MeTa post: Memorial fund?
meatbomb: the major difference between the examples you used & the post here is that none of your (immediate) victims were children

Recently a tornado hit where I live. No one was hurt or killed, thank god, but homes were destroyed. Children lived in those homes. Is it ok to solicit donations here since children will be effected? What about the local sugar refinery explosion that killed 13, injured many, and wrecked the plant, putting a lot of... [more]

MeTa post: 5 minutes of great reading.
That "excellent FPP" is close to unreadable for a non-American.

Don't worry, it was unreadable to many in the American Public School system.

The post was interesting, but it would not be a good idea to see lots of these. It's like the Sixth Sense, it might work once, but from then on the gimmick feels like a cheap, unimaginative hack.

MeTa post: Metafilter - lessons learned from the BB problem?
but none of which are particularly satisfactory along the line of answering the question, "can this happen here?"

Yes, it can totally happen here, despite whatever policies or written docs might be easy to find on the site. All it takes is one asshole mod deciding to fling shit. But as Jess said , the mods really seem to like the site and are actively involved in it, so they don't have much incentive to do that.... [more]

Is the implication that the people over on Boing Boing don't like their site and aren't actively involved in it?

No, the Metamods like their site in a different way, one that probably looks more like love. Remember, all of the mods were pretty active users of the site before actually being asked to do admin stuff, let alone get paid for it. That's a huge difference and one that I think counts in a thousand different ways as to how they'll act as... [more]

MeTa post: Ugh, all RIGHT, mom, I get it.
the preceding 5 (10? 15?) answers that all say the same thing?

They don't all say the same thing. Some are short and terse, while others give longer explanations, a few point out that the OP may not know as much as he thinks, and still others give advice opposite the one marked best answer. I actually think this is a good thing, as people tend to see things a bit differently, so having different ways of saying similar things... [more]

Jesus people! You answered my question! Enough!

Actually, no one is talking specifically about your problem, this discussion is about something else. And really, you shouldn't be surprised about passionate responses when you ask whether you should violate someone's express wishes about their property.

MeTa post: It is difficult to get a man to understand something when his job depends on not understanding it.
What part of "...without context a single link youtube music video is a really bad post for metafilter" don't you understand?

That said, I dug the music, but Jessamyn is right, there's no context as why this link was neat, cool, or whatever, despite your mysteriously written post. Seriously, what's the point? From the wikipedia article about Trentemøller:

Trentemøller made his debut in 1997 together with DJ T.O.M. when they formed the first live-house act in Denmark, Trigbag, and started playing concerts all over the globe....In 2007 the song "Moan" by Trentemøller featuring Ane Trolle was a big hit in Denmark as well as a top 30 hit in the Belgium Singles Top 50.

Mmm, dinner.

I posted something non-ironic, straight forward, without a reference point to a 1973-1986 pop culture waypoint

It was good music. I wish you'd stop being so obtuse and just explain the backstory.

Googling "danish 1973-1986 pop culture" doesn't seem to get any relevant hits, so anytime you wanna explain what meant, please do. As it is, you're reenacting the worst tendencies of Lost.

but too often jess' mod status seems to overshadow her other merits

Not really. She'll get her ashes hauled in MetaTalk, same as the others. One day they're magnificent people, a real benefit to the human race blah blah and then a week later, they're fucking assholes for deleting someone's special snowflake post/comment/joke etc.

MeTa post: Post editing ability
I'm torn about this one. On the one hand, it seems useful. On the other hand, it's seems like a coding nightmare (is there a timer counting down? what happens if the user is in the midst of editing when the clock runs out? what happens if it's used to send out digs, then erase them? does the user get to see the rest of the thread while editing?), with the potential for major user abuse.

On the other hand, can't ya just get it right the first time or post another comment?
posted to MetaTalk by Brandon Blatcher at 8:58 PM on June 28, 2008
The 360 seconds from original post (not unlimited posting) limits the possibility of abuse.

That's six minutes. An asshole can do a lot in six minutes.

MeTa post: Backstabbing is not conducive to intellectual discourse
I could go on and on, referencing Metafilter as well as other sites but why bother?

Whatever happened on other sites shouldn't be brought to Metafilter. You should stick to Malor's behavior on this site, because MetaTalk is about this site.

The fact that you're bringing this other drama here hurts your case. Acursory look at your links of Malor's behavior on this site makes you look hypersensitive along with Malor's immaturity.
posted to MetaTalk by Brandon Blatcher at 8:07 PM on June 27, 2008
But going forward, I must now ask you publicly to leave my name out of your comments. Make your arguments stand on their own merits.

Look, this basically comes down to the fact that Malor is needling you, throwing out little digs, and you fell for it, getting angry and responding to him about this.

And demanding someone on the internet not use your alias makes you look ignorant, yet full of yourself.

I don't really know how to make the close button make sense to folks who dislike it

Maybe change the wording and thought behind from disabled to inactive? As in "This account is inactive." Disabled sounds kinda negative and permanent, while inactive is bit more neutral, with no implied time frame.
posted to MetaTalk by Brandon Blatcher at 11:58 AM on June 25, 2008
I also think there should be different messages for different situations- "This account was banned" vs. "This account was closed by user".

Those strike me as too specific, with people bombarding MetaTalk or emailing the mods with "Why was this account banned" or "Why did user X close her/her account? and when? and I can send them an email? Why not, you're not the boss of me, fuck you!... [more]

See, I wondered if what we have right now is not specific enough,

I guess there's a balance of letting users know that someone is no longer on the site vs keeping that someone's privacy. There's probably no "one size fits all" solution.
