MeTa post: Chicago Meetup: the Bloody Return of Eamondaly
Well, I totally vote Goat. And I prefer Thursdays because I'm already downtown Thursdays, but with notice, I can switch days. So if Wednesday is universally preferred, then, whatev. I am officially not casting an official ballot on the Wednesday vs. Thursday issue.

Since my name is up there on the top line, does that mean my attendance is required?

MeTa post: A midsummer night's dream...a Chicago meetup?
So wait, is anybody going? Wait, let me count 'em up. We have a yes or a maybe, or at least a chime-in from:

MeetMegan
IndigoRain
crush-onastick
adamdschneider
Arbac
Kattullus
mismatched
SpiffyRob
hydrophonic
wfrgms
halonine
sparkletone

I guess I just felt like making a list, because tonight is really inconvenient... [more]

Holy crap! So we're down to:

MeetMegan
IndigoRain
Kattullus
mismatched
SpiffyRob
hydrophonic
halonine
sparkletone
+ Iridic (yay!)

I really love making lists. I hope you all have a wonderful time, drink lots, eat cheezborgers, take pictures, post pictures, and get home safely.

I live in Highland Park and I really *like* going down to the Goat for meetups, because I enjoy the place and I wouldn't go otherwise.

However, I'd definitely not object to meeting at Tommy Nevin's, a place I also really enjoy. And it would cut my travel time in half.

But I guess, after saying that, I'd have to actually commit to going to a meetup if it were held there, which is a problem for me. So don't count this comment as a strong vote either way.

Well, I'm available every Wednesday and Thursday in September.

I'm unaware of this "Snuggery", though it sounds awfully snuggly. I don't care too much about the venue ... in general, I just hate going to those places where everyone is younger, cuter, and more successful than I am. I like a place for adults, even washed up ones. Seedy is fantastic in that respect.

I myself am eyeing Thursday, September 25. I'm not sure how far out you... [more]

MeTa post: Because beer makes fire better
I tell you what, I bet a lot of people are already going to have plans for that night. I personally don't, but am not sure I want to deal with transportation in and out of the city with you CRAZIES on the loose. :)

I don't actually worry about teh crazy, just the sheer volume of loose critters. And actually, I don't worry about that either. I'm just sayin', regular ole week nights after work tend to be better for these things. But, y'know, I go where the... [more]

8. 8 is a good number. I'm in.

The "who are we" scenarios of which you speak illustrate one of the best answers for rabbitsnake's question about why we meet at the Goat. It's the type of place where there just isn't a question who your group is (no matter what group you are part of) and if there were a question, it's easy to ask around.

FYIs, I'm iffy. I'll be there, or I won't. :) If I'm not, then there'll be more beer for you.

Yeah, it's 4pm and I'm leaving work within a half hour. I'm riding my bike home to the burbs, which means I'll still be on my bike at 6pm. And after that I'll probably be in a hot bath. So you guys just have your beers and think about me in my bath. Have fun!

It's very hard for me to believe this happened and it didn't wake me up. I'm a very light sleeper. I wake up if one of my dog shifts position in her bed.

I think you're all playing a prank on me.

I guess I need to add metatalk to Google Reader so I don't go missing things like this.

I'll be there WITHOUT my damn non-sticking name tags. (We can sharpie directly onto our clothing.)

I'll be there at whatever time leaving Highland Park at ~4:40 gets me there. (Probably nearly 6, after parking etc.)

I'm balking slightly now, as I just got a whole bunch of work to do. So if I don't show, don't call a cop. If I do show, it might be for a short time. And if I don't show, drink to me once or twice. :)

Aw, don't taze me bro.

It's looking like I'm a definite no-show tonight. Too much to suddenly do. Too much travel time. Too cold.

Drink and be merry!

MeTa post: On the unbearable anonymous of being
I've never been anonymous online, I mean, generally speaking. My name is always in my profile, my e-mail addresses have usually been my real name, etc. (Except for some cutesy ones I've had, but then, my name would still be available somewhere.) Hiding my identity has simply never been a concern or something I've thought about. As a woman, I figure I can be stalked by a guy who sees me in the grocery store just as easily as by someone who meets me online ... actually, more easily by grocery... [more]

MeTa post: Chicago Meetup
We also have this thread going on. I'm too lazy to see if the map festival is still going on, but my point is, since as far as I know that never happened, we need to consolidate / join forces.

I might be wrong, but I highly doubt Goose Island is averse to "a group of friends." Unless we require a quiet room, a podium, are using a gavel and taking minutes, or some such. I'd think this is way different than an organized regular group meeting or a campaign meeting, etc. That said, never been there, no opinion. I do love their beer.

Also, can't commit this far in advance to a week night because I live in the burbs and don't have a regular FT job, but... [more]

Oh boy, I guess I really *have* to go to the meetup now so I can ask wfrgms all about living in Pilsen. Assuming you ended up moving there. Damn, I'm running out of excuses why I can't make it! (Don't mind me, I'm just a socially anxious idiot.)

*We* are going to look like tourists in there.

:)

My ex was visiting last Xmastime (before he became my ex) and we were walking past it, looking for a place to eat, so we walked in, looked around ... and walked out. ;)

(We ended up at Shaw's and had about $100 worth of oysters at the bar.)

But oysters is NOT what this is about. See you tonight.

Oooh! I actually have a whole bunch of sticky labels we could use for name tags. They don't say "HELLO My Name Is" at the top, but they should work.

Definite thumbs up for Billy Goat here. And it takes the whole anxiety-causing "unknown" out of the equation for the next meetup for me. (And misskaz, I come from *Highland Park* for goshsakes. Evanston is my halfway point!)

It was lovely meeting everyone! Great photos. Sorry I missed the afterparty. I'm usually one to participate in the bar-closings, but my sneaking suspicion that my dog needed me at home was correct. (Greyhound fanatics unite!!)

OK, like an idiot I had been looking for him by typing in random large numbers (you know, like http://www.metafilter.com/user/64264, but I just never got around to trying that number). Forgot about the username.mefi/ method. Sigh.

Well, obviously he has increased the average mefi IQ by a point or two. ;) Welcome, Rick.

MeTa post: Chicagoland mapgeeks unite!
OK, I didn't know this Festival existed. It really is spread out all over the place (location- and time-wise), isn't it?

I'm not a map geek (I'm in my atlas, lovin' my maps, though I wouldn't qualify as a map geek I'm sure) but I'm sure it would be fun to go to an exhibit or two one Saturday afternoon.

And then go to the Map Room for some brew.

MeTa post: Making an AskMe anonymous after the fact?
I've been happy to see sensitive posts lately that *weren't* asked anonymously.

That said, kids can be sensitive. I have two distinct memories that made me very upset as a youngster: 1) overhearing my mom say, "when I was on birth control..." -- I didn't realize that birth control is the norm and came away from it sobbing, "mom didn't want me!"; 2) finding a business card of a child therapist in my mom's address book -- to this day I kind of want to... Plenty of beer gardens to hang out in on Navy Pier that time of year.

Alas, I'll be out of town. Which is just as well, because I am paralyzed with fear at the thought of meeting mefites in person (and their persons meeting me).

Is it only me?

ND¢ -- that's kind of what I was afraid of. That would involve, like, confrontation. I'm much better at leaving the passive/aggressive notes. ;)

Now that I've admitted my fear I might actually attend this meetup, if I weren't going to be at ragbrai. Maybe we could have a Mefi ragbrai meetup....
