MeFi post: Is Day Care a luxury or a benefit?
Um, what? Isn't $1,425 well above the market rate already?

In Silicon Valley? I don't know, but I wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't.

It's the Whole Foods of kid care when most people would be happy with better than McDonald's.

No kidding. Meanwhile, a bit of info on the Reggio Emilia approach, for those who are interested.

MeFi post: title
I've been trying to recall the name of a model for days- she's very androgynous looking, looks to be of Latin descent, short hair. Can anyone think of who I'm talking about? I'm browsing the list at models.com to see if I can find her...

MeFi post: Everybody loves a choo-choo
The A train pulled in, and Gustav (who had been hoping for the C) started throwing a fit. However, the other passengers in the car gave me warm smiles. I guess they hadn’t seen that many 3-year-olds sobbing, “Local…I want the local.”

What's funny about that story is that I seem to recall a very similar story being sent into OverheardInNewYork. Trying to find it, but having little luck. Wonder if it was them.

MeFi post: What should I do with my life?
Our guidance counselors patiently explain to them that they're never going to make it as dancers and even if they do "there's no money in it" and shouldn't they consider going to colleges that will help them get a good job in business.

Of course, on the other side of things, they're right. I don't think anyone I know is more miserable than the people trying to pursue careers with arts with nothing to fall back on. People who got MFAs from... [more]

They have no way of judging whether a student has the potential to succeed in an art - or a science - or a sport.

That's not true. There are plenty of ways of judging whether someone has the potential, the means, the training, the background, whatever, to succeed in the career path of their choice. Will that judgment be right all the time? No, but it can still be useful.

MeFi post: Crack Lung
Does this make anyone else sad? I've had a feeling for a while that if she doesn't get the right kind of help she's going to kill herself. I get no pleasure watching someone self-destruct so dramatically with paparazzi cameras documenting every painful moment, and every other blog and message board laughing at how horrible she looks.

Agreed. I generally skip right past news about her; it's just too sad.

MeFi post: Blue Collar Babies
Having children with the EXPECTATION that someone else will pay to raise it is very, very ugly.

I'm with whoaali, I think you're wrong about the welfare angle. To say they're getting pregnant because they know they can go on welfare is based on the assumption that these girls have any understanding of what it means to financially provide for oneself and ones children. I'm assuming that all these girls now live at home and have all their needs taken... [more]

MeFi post: Goodbye, Netflix Profiles?
That's just hostility to some of your most loyal customers

That's the Netflix business model. Their "best" customers aren't the most loyal, because the most loyal customers watch a lot of movies, and that costs them a lot of money. Their best customers are the ones who get their first 3 movies and promptly let them sit on their desk for 6 months. It's the same reason they started to delay shipping if you're prompt about sending back movies.... [more]

I think the folks with the slow turn-around time have beef with their local US Mail, not Netflix.

How long you been a customer? This is my third go-round here in NYC, and I am certain that the problem is not with the US Mail. My movies arrive and send out in 1 day for about 6 months, at which point movies at the top of my list become unavailable (and I highly doubt there are that many other people wanting to see disc 2 of the 1st season of "Boy... MeFi post: What's the problem with Yale?
I know literally dozens of people that decided the residence college social scene was bogus and fake, narrow and contrived, and abandoned it in favor of something a little more broadening.

Amen. I did it for a few years, and I couldn't take it. So I moved to NYC and became a commuter student. I enjoyed college much more as a job than as a life.

MeFi post: Phony airline ads and website almost too close to reality
Could something like this (some sort of economic incentive to bring less weight on a plane) be worth it? How much weight would have to be removed from a typical commercial airplane to make it worthwhile? Honestly, flying these days is the pits. It really couldn't get any worse. Anything that could make it cheaper is fine by me, since my experience there's nothing airlines can do it to make it any more fun.
posted to MetaFilter by ThePinkSuperhero at 8:21 PM on June 11, 2008
By "worthwhile", I mean worthwhile financially to the airlines in any way that could keep tickets cheap.

McCain blatantly lied to reporters about what he said in a major televised speech a few days earlier

Or he just forget that he said something that he probably didn't even write, which given the circumstances of the job of campaigning for President, isn't totally out of the realm of possibility.

MeFi post: Jon & Kate Plus 8: raising twins and sextuplets on reality TV
I'm watching the show right now; have been on and off all day, whenever my sister gains control of the remote. I just don't get why you'd put your children and your family life on TV- why expose the most important thing in your life to that sort of criticism? What good can come of it (other than money)? I get reality shows for Playboy playmates or aspiring singers, but for a family? Other than the money, I just don't get it.

MeFi post: Carrie Bradshaw knows good sex*
Also interesting that shows like Entourage (good first two seasons, HORRENDOUS now) are full of tremendously wealthy and superficial characters, and people call it "lifestyle porn" and don't bat an eyelash. yet the women on SATC are such horrible bitches.

That's because Entourage and other shows like it are written from a stereotypically male point of view. It makes people crazy that Sex and the City looked at things from another angle,... [more]

Catrall's voice changes after the first season to a mockery of herself, and she never comes back.

I'll ask, following up my post above: do you (people watching this show in general) view the characters overall as mostly sympathetic, or mostly worthy of derision?

I don't know, I have a hard time of thinking of it as a either or. For me, it seems like the characters themselves are liked, but they do things that viewers may not like. Do viewers like Samantha? I think so, yes. As far as I can tell, do many relate to her sexual prowess? Not really.... [more]

Apparently women should want to be like her.

Who said that? I don't think anybody said that. I wouldn't say that. Who wants to be someone who isn't real? Sure, there's the dream of wanting some of the aspects of the magical lives on TV (the free time, the money, the glamour), but that's in the same category as wanting a pony that can fly- nobody is holding their breath.

Because the show never stands up and goes,... [more]

So when you buy a pair of those and wear them out, it's like wearing a bra as a shirt. Even if it's a pretty bra... it's still not appropriate.

That's the most depressing thing I saw on the internet this month.

I know, as I continued reading, the panic and fear kept building. Look at all these people wasting all this money! Or people who desperately need the money just to get by! I need to save more money! No more spending money, starting right now! Rice and beans for the rest of my life!

MeFi post: Too much TMI?
Ah yes, NYMag manages to stay it, too:

What troubles us about Gould's oncoming article is not that it will be a rehash of everything we've seen before. It's that people will mistake her perspective on the Internet, writing, and fame as the perspective of an entire generation of bloggers. (Much the way, as the Observer noted, Joyce Maynard's essay in the Times Magazine in 1972 seemed to speak for a generation of young women.) In our experience reading her work,... [more]

What's the benefit? I don't see it. Or maybe it's that I don't consider exposure success. Ok, you have an article in the NYTimes magazine- and? What next? Is this a steppingstone toward something bigger, something better, or is it just a continuation of the same?
