The War Within

Bob Woodward has a new book released today titled The War Within: A Secret White House History 2006-2008. The Politico has a lengthy review by Mike Allen. Bloomberg also has an early, less flattering, review.

2008 Pulitzer Prizes

The 2008 Pulitzer Prize winners were recently announced. Some winners worth noting include the article in the Washington Post about violin virtuoso Joshua Bell busking in the Washington D.C. Metro station, which won the award for Feature Writing. The Washington Post also won the International Reporting award for a disturbing series about modern day mercenaries. This article about Blackwater operating beyond the reach of any law was part of the series. The Washington Post Pulitzer page has more information on their winners and finalists.

2007 Pulitzer Prizes

The 2007 Pulitzer Prize winners have been announced. My favorites for 2007 are International Reporting, National Reporting, Editorial Cartooning (one example, and another), and Breaking News Photo. The Pulitzer site archive is an amazing source of browsing material. Unfortunately, it is not the easiest site to navigate. So here are some previous winners: 2006 2005 2004 2003 2002 2001 2000

What resources can you recommend for professional digital video editing and processing? Books, magazines, websites, forums, courses and software suggestions are all appreciated.

Firefox and Javascript issue

I'm looking for JavaScript code that successfully updates the href value for the "application/rss+xml" link in a way that enables the Firefox Live Bookmarks functionality to work with a href value assigned at run-time.

For Sale By Owner questions

I have "For Sale By Owner" questions. It has been a while since anyone has asked for advice for selling a home yourself, and I'm hoping for some more informative answers. If you've sold your house yourself, what websites did you use? Is there a company you would recommend for a MLS flat fee listing that includes a listing on Realtor.com? How small of a commission did you find buyer's agents are willing to take?

Do you have an example of a well designed alphanumeric outline?

Have you seen the redesigned Presidential Daily Brief memo featuring "terrorist determined to attack America"? (Do you have the link?) I'm looking for the same type of design examples for alphanumeric or numeric outlines.

What PC application will convert MPEG-2 to MPEG-4 and is scriptable?

I have a video archive in MPEG-2 format. I'd like to create a script to convert the videos to MPEG-4 files for internet streaming. What are my options?

Measuring average download speed

I have to run tests that involve measuring the transmission time and average transmission speed for downloading a certain file or files over HTTP at a range of connection speeds. Is there software that will make this easy?

Lion Heart -- A Photo Essay

Lion Heart is the nickname given to Saleh Khalaf, a nine year old boy maimed by an explosion in Iraq. Deanne Fitzmaurice's photo essay about his ongoing recovery won the 2005 Pultizer Prize for Feature Photography.

Astrolabes revisited

Astrolabes revisited: previously discussed here. Are astrolabes a way to navigate life? Want a free personal birth chart? How about an astrological weather forecast?

Copyright law: Can I reproduce a table or a series...

Copyright law: Can I reproduce a table or a series of tables or diagrams from professional journals as part of a larger educational critical analysis and distribute my new work under a Creative Commons or GPL type license? I think that as long as my use is allowed under fair use doctrine, I can release my creation under my own terms. Correct? Or are data tables and modelling diagrams beyond fair use? Does the fact that it is educational and non-profit matter?

ResumeWiki: Pad your resume with strangers on the Internet

ResumeWiki is a community edited resume centre. You post your profile (goals, etc) and assume the community of peers will give you comments and possible edits. Their ResumeWriting section has some interesting links, and could be the place to stay up caught up on HR snobbery.
