The story of a cab ride.
Most memorable cab ride:
Frankfurt, a few years ago. Having flown Ryan Air to an almost deserted air strip miles from anywhere, we reached Frankfurt Airport by bus. By then, I'd had enough of public transport and was more than prepared to pay a little bit extra to get a taxi from the airport to our hotel. Unfortunately, we got the most miserable cab driver it has ever been my misfortune to encounter. There were four of us and, as I was the only one who spoke any German,... [more]

Bail them out? Or let them reap what they sow? Who wins and loses?
the costs will mostly be borne by all wealthy people, whether risk takers or not, since they pay the bulk of Federal Income taxes.
I'm not sure that's true at all. Proportionately, wealthy people tend to pay far less in income tax than those on lower incomes. The wealthy, and particularly the risk taking wealthy, are very adept at avoiding taxes. There's no getting away from the fact that the cost of this bailout will be mainly borne... [more]

It would be interesting to see the translations of the questions asked, simply because, 'Who do you think was behind the September 11th terrorist attack?' is a very different question to, 'Who do you think was responsible for the September 11th terrorist attack?'

Life in a Northern Town
Read the report. Basically, the economic locus of Britain has moved south as ties with Europe have strengthened and the northern industrial-based economic growth has slowed or stagnated. Britain's urban revitalization policies have not worked. People in the north could move to areas in the south where there are more jobs and better jobs. Why is that so crazy?
But that is what happens. People from the north move south all the time. They move to London... [more]

I c*nt stop saying twat.
I love arriving really late to a thread like this...
Anyhow, I lived in the US for 18 months and probably used the word as much as I use it here - which is to say, hardly all the time, but certainly not never - and I was not once aware of it offending anyone. I'm honestly surprised to hear that people think of it as a misogynistic insult. I probably wouldn't direct it at a woman, but that's more to do with the fact I rarely direct any insulting terms at women than... [more]

"People should talk like Americans AROUND HERE or RISK BEING MISUNDERSTOOD IN A PARTICULARLY OFFENSIVE MANNER."
Oh fuck off. Please.
We all, I think, temper our language according to audience. But we're not children either. I don't think I've ever used the particular word under discussion here on MetaFilter, and I don't suppose I ever would, but telling me I've got to speak like an American or risk being misunderstood.... [more]

I think we've (I've?) strayed way too deep into an argument about whether people should temper their language in general for an American audience, or whether said audience should be credited with enough intelligence to understand that there are certain cultural differences in the use of English, and away from the debate about the specific words in question.

klangklangston - You keep banging the same drum, and it's the wrong one. Please stop making this into a UK v US argument. There have been people from a number of other countries, with Australia being the best represented, sharing the surprise at the offence caused by one, four letter word. There has also been a not insignificant number of Americans wondering what all the fuss is about.
It's OK, I get it, some Americans find the words under discussion particularly... [more]

42 days and a resignation
I could be wrong, but I thought polls were showing about 65% of Brits in favour of the 42 day detention rule. If that holds true in Davies' constituency, then fighting a by-election purely on that issue could be a bit of a mistake.
