Still

Musically I was aiming for Sondre Lerche. Lyrically, I was fresh off the experience of walking around the East Village, popping in to various music venues, and continually being the oldest, most boring guy in the room.

where to sleep in the city that never sleeps

Hotel recommendations needed for NYC. Ideally downtown. Not crazy expensive, but it's for my parents, so it needs to be fancier than a backpacker's hotel/hostel (eg, private bath, not too noisy, clean, etc). Many thanks!

Major Bounce

Reason, a Strat, a Vibrolux, and a Tubescreamer - what more do you need?

Boerum Hill Stomp

A groovy little bluegrass-inspired solo acoustic guitar number.

I should probably just rent a helicopter

Long Island-filter: need to get from Sag Harbor to Port Authority on Thursday, 6/28, leaving Sag Harbor at 4:00 pm, need to be at Port Authority no later than 7:30. I think the LIRR schedule isn't very amenable to my needs. Can I make it by car? Will I be a nervous wreck the whole time, stuck in traffic, freaking out about being late?

What is ailing my mac?

Macfilter: is it on it's last legs? My dual-1.25 ghz G4 running 10.3.9 with 768 MB RAM and 14 gigs of empty space on it's hard drive is acting strange. What should I do? How serious is this?

To cut or not to cut?

How tricky/expensive is it to replace the headphone jack on a 2nd generation iPod?

Manhattan

The last song from my new record, "Beauty, Grazing at the Trough". Since I completed it last December, I've been posting a song per week, and this is the last one. It's also the last song on the record. After some aggressive, loud, dense songs (some of which are not particularly chipper), I wanted to end things more simply. So this song is acoustic-guitar driven and uses only hand-percussion (including some triangle that I reversed in one spot, to cool effect, if I do say so myself). I also borrowed a friend's Gretsch for the electric guitar parts. Final word goes to a harmonica solo over some pretty arpeggios. Site, myspace.

Losing Ground

Loud, bombastic rock. Lots and lots of chords. I was aiming for "Down By The River", or "Polyethylene". Site, cd, myspace.

Crawl

The weirdest song on my new record. Unrelated harmonies, weird backwards noise, weird melody, weird guitar solos. Tried to make the production fit, though.

I Know The Truth

A mopey country ballad that someone once told me sounds like Townes Van Zandt. More info here, here, and here.

Chronic

A little bit of "Sympathy for the Devil", guitars inspired by Jonny Greenwood and The Edge, a China cymbal, Reason, some backwards editing, some speeded-up and smashed together vox, some slowed down vox - let's just see where all this gets me. Site, cd, myspace.

I See You

I've been posting a song a week from my new record, "Beauty, Grazing at the Trough", and here's the latest installment! Loud, raucous rock and roll, lifted from Wilco lifting a groovy 70s vibe. "I see you in my dreams at night/sometimes in color, sometimes black and white." Site, cd, myspace.

Leave Me Alone

A goofy romp in the spirit of Elvis Costello, with a sort of "All My Loving" kind of vibe to it. The bridge reminds me of the Beach Boys...Site, cd, myspace.

Calling Plan

A groovy acoustic guitar riff, some drum programming, and vintage Fender gear, all in the service of yet another "good riddance" song - this one an homage to the frustrations of cell phone communication. cd, myspace, site.

Goner

An unapologetically moody ballad, aspiring to describe the intersection between Pink Floyd, The Beatles, Radiohead, and the Band. Any excuse to use a pedal-steel guitar and brass, really. Site, cd, myspace.

Everything I Want

Going for sort of a "Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out", "My Old School" kind of vibe with the horns - plus some extremely difficult chord changes to solo over (not gratuitously, I hope). Website, myspace, cd.

No One Here But Me

The second installment from my new cd. Reminds me a bit of the Who, if I do say so myself. Start off '07 with a little 5/4!

My Baby Likes To Eat

I recently completed an album, and as a devoted (obsessed?) Mefite, I thought it only appropriate to share. The album is lyric-driven rock, this particular tune has a bit of a country flavor. More info here and here, you can preview and/or purchase the album from the fine folks at cd baby.

Tokyo on $85 a day?

I've been offered a one month gig in Tokyo, Osaka, and Nagoya, with a US$85 per diem. Travel and accomodation are covered - I'm only responsible for food and fun. I know that Japan is expensive, but just HOW expensive is it? How far will this get me?

Roomies!

Roommate-filter: I've been in the same apartment (without a lease) in NYC for 9 years. It's time for a new roommate. What can I do to protect myself from psychos and other difficult roommate situations?

Where's Linda?

"I'm John, and I used to play with my partner Paul." "I'm Paul, and I used to play with my partner Art." Yes, it's youtube, and it prominently features a couple of musicians from the sixties who have been discussed on the blue before with varying degrees of admiration/scorn. I still found this fascinating - compared to today's awards ceremonies, it looks downright ancient. But I love the spontaneity and the humor. Finally, as if that weren't enough - despite some stiff competition, the winner is...

Saw Syriana last night, it got my head spinning...

Operation Eagle Claw, the failed attempt to rescue the American hostages from the Iranian embassy in April of 1980, was clearly a deeply-flawed plan. Was it also hindered by foul play?

Where should I sit?

ConcertSeatsFilter: I neurotically, obsessively bought two tix to the same concert at Madison Square Garden in an effort to get the best seat I could. Both are good for different reasons, so I'm having a tough time deciding which one to use.

DVDFilter

My DVD player (Sony DVP-NS325) hangs. The discs work okay on my computer. It's 2+ years old and is currently the source of a great amount of agita in my life. My television is ancient, so I'm running the DVD player through a box that is supposed to allow me to connect multiple components (DVD, VCR, games) to a single television, although I don't have all the other components, so only the DVD player is running through it. Is it time for a new player? Will cleaning the discs help? How does one clean (um, and not DAMAGE) DVDs?

Interview with Tadatoshi Akiba

A fascinating interview with Dr. Tadatoshi Akiba, mayor of Hiroshima and president of Mayors for Peace. Dr. Akiba is New York for the UN conference on the Nuclear Nonproliferation treaty, and he took the time for some eloquent straight talk about the nuclear weapons and international politics. (First link is to a real audio file.)

MacFilter: Finally upgraded from my old 400 mhz G4...

MacFilter: Finally upgraded from my old 400 mhz G4 to a 1.25 ghz dual processor G4. I'd like to move the maxtor ata hard drive that I installed in the old machine to the new machine. Will I lose the data in the process? Or can I just take it out of one, put it in the next, and continue to access all my files as if nothing has changed?
