Texas Taxes Titties
What gets me is this bit from the first link:
"Another gripe is that the tax implies an unfair link between club patronage and sexual violence, though no evidence to support this has been presented. State representative Ellen Cohen, who sponsored the legislation, argued that connecting the two is fair because both strip clubs and sex crimes objectify women."
So ... it's OK for the state to make money from... [more]

Thank You Sparx for linking this, I hadn't read SP before, started reading from day one last night. (God knows why but) Choo-choo Bear made me laugh 'til I cried, and I have been desperately in need of both lately.

And can anyone find any mention of how many pairs she was giving away? It came across to me that the border visit was a promotional thing, like a book-signing, and the 'real' purpose of the shoes was as a pricey artwork. In which case, I second OmieWise above.

"well, it breaks the ice, doesn't it"
Accidental gold pickup line I used in a bar once. Asked a hotgirlTM if she was German. Because I'd just overheard a guy asking his friend "how do I say 'I love you' in German?" And assumed they had to be talking about her.
The catch was, I was being sincere at the time: I doubt it would work twice.
And it turned out she was gay. Just my darn luck, all the pretty girls turn out to be gay.
Wait, that makes no sense.
/confused.

Now I think of it, it's that sort of day today....

Plans for English smoking ban under threat
Just a side-note - I was working in a bar here (NZ) last summer when the smoking ban came in. i_am_joes_spleen and The Monkey may remember the first couple of weeks adjusting to the foul reek of B.O and stale spilt beer that was no longer covered up by cigarette smoke ... hurrrghhhhhhhh.

It didn't seem sporting to me to post it.

Cats... in... sinks
My Badcat (he deserves the name) has always had a thing about the toilet flush. He seems to be getting better with age, but used to be very embarassing - he'd sit outside the bathroom door when I was in there - howling - and run in as soon as the door was opened to stick his paws up on the bowl and watch the last of the flush. He'd do it to visitors sometimes too.

I was away at a friend's beach place all weekend - no TV, no papers, so of course the first call I got on Monday morning was Joe Public asking why all flags were at half-mast. I quickly shunted him to '0' (for Operator or Oubliette, I think) and was a bit sheepish when I picked up the paper.
There is a condolences/memorial book for signing at Parliament right now, anyone can drop in and leave some thoughts there.

Face transplant surgery
I think this is great news, wonderful if they can pull it off. (pun?)
I think a lot of people underestimate the ways that 'appearance' surgery can be so wonderfully lfe-changing. I know I did, until this year, when I finally got my mammoth, broken, useless chest reduced. I can run fast enough downhill now to get those ripped-up jeans and scarred knees back that I had at twelve. And I don't wake up in the morning with my spine out of place. All this and more from a relatively simple... [more]

There is enough detail there to make for a great exercise in jabbascript-sleuthing. For example, I guess this is her cousin Theodore, one of the Nefarious Knappens, who would certainly have access to areas "behind some objects in the station of a well known bus company".

Here's a brief article on the phenomenon in New Zealand. Our 'road-toll' is astronomical, and the controversial crosses first appeared in my hometown, on the route I used to spend 80 minutes on every day.
Mostly they are seen as a reminder about road safety, but lately they are so common they are becoming easy to ignore, (sadly). Some sprout massive displays of plastic flowers and odd tributes; beer bottles at the spot that Gang member went under a truck, foil windmills where a... [more]

If you grow stuff, you don't know whether, when it is ripe, it will sell for 1 Euro or 10 Euros, so you don't know how much time/acreage/cowshit to invest in it.
Then you should not be a farmer, you should get a job sweeping floors somewhere, and join a floor-sweepers union.

Hmm, the laws of common-sense dictate that a sharp blade and a swift cut are sufficient to cause an animal to bleed to death. (Don't forget to hang it by it's heels!) But my main sticking point was the avoiding unnecessary suffering bit. I don't think I will ever be brought to see the necessity of slaughtering an animal to get the ashes to purify a temple and so on. So I think I will just watch this thread from the sidelines from now on, seeing as how I don't... [more]
