I am looking for an iPod dock/speaker system which fulfills the following criteria: definitely known to be compatible with
3rd generation iPod (i.e. the dock provides power and receives sound via dock connector), AC powered, available in the UK, cost (new or used) less than about £30.
Most retailers are vague about which iPod models are compatible with their docks, and most current docks only support 4th generation or newer iPods (it seems the dock connector on the 3G had a different pinout). I'm struggling to find available docks that are known good with the 3G.

How to print annotations on a PDF? I have a PDF from a colleague, which has annotations in the margin. They seem to use the standard annotation mechanism and are visible in Adobe Reader and Apple Preview. But neither application will let me print the annotations inline with the document. How can I do this, on Mac, Linux or Windows?

Help me identify a movie which contains this scene: A woman and a man are on a moving train. The woman's breasts are painfully full of milk; the man is hungry. The woman breastfeeds the man, satisfying both their needs.
What I know: This is similar to the breastfeeding scene at the end of The Grapes of Wrath.
What I
think I know: The scene I am thinking of is not from the movie of The Grapes of Wrath itself. The train is moving (unlike the stationary wagon/barn in TGoW). The movie is Russian, or of a Russian novel. The scene is presented as a parable, with a solemn voiceover. The scene is at the beginning of the movie, and the movie is from the 60s or 70s.

Here in Oxford, every second lamp post has a coded sign on it, indicating that there is a movie filming location nearby. Sometimes, it's obvious which movie is involved -- e.g. 'LWS LOC' refers to the TV series 'Lewis'. In other cases, it's pretty hard to work out -- e.g. 'The Golden Compass' was signed by a jumble of letters that I've forgotten ('ICHR LOC' or similar). I remember seeing a similarly obscure code on Santa Monica Pier. I'd like to know what movies are being filmed where. Is there an online resource that would tell me which location code refers to which movie? I couldn't find this information in the IMDB.

Can anyone identify
this work of art? I believe it is an etching ("l'eau forte") by Braque, but what and when? It resembles the etchings (
example) he did for Hesiod's Theogonie. Sorry for the low-quality cameraphone photo.

Our white porcelain enamel sink has a stain on it. The stain is silver/grey and seems to have resulted from dropping a steel cup into the sink (probably repeatedly). Two related questions: Is it possible to stain a sink in this way? And how can we remove the stain?

RevoltingFilter: I have a hole in my face. It resembles a large blackhead, but is a permanent fixture. Out of curiosity, I stuck a pin in it to gauge its depth. To my horror, amazement and admiration, it was 8mm deep. What on earth is this thing?

I can't paste graphics from any other application to Adobe Illustrator CS2, on a Mac. Whenever I try, i get the inane message, 'Quicktime and a TIFF (uncompressed) decompressor are need to see this picture'. Needless to say, I have QuickTime installed.

Isolator
Recent MeFi project
Think is a really cool program that covers up the Mac OS desktop so you can concentrate on one thing at a time. But it doesn't behave
exactly how I want it to. And so I wrote my own program, Isolator, that does. It runs in the menu bar. Click its icon or press F8 to toggle Isolator on and off. When it's on, it will cover up the desktop, icons and all but the frontmost application. When you switch application with the Dock or alt-tab, Isolator hides the application you switched away from, keeping your attention on just one thing.

I'm looking for recommendations for a home MP3 player. I want something with much larger capacity than an iPod (preferably using standard 3.5" drives), and am happy for it to be physically quite a bit bigger than an iPod. It needs to be quieter and less power-hungry than a standard PC. If it had a sensible UI and a remote control, that would be good too. Hopefully, it would be cheaper than either an iPod or a PC, too. [Currently, an old linux box does this job, but it is too noisy for my small apartment, and the interface is too clunky.]

I would like to see a mechanism whereby MetaFilter Musicians were encouraged to accept donations (PayPal links?) and listeners were encouraged to donate. I would far rather donate to my favorite artists here than prop up Sony Corp.

Someone in my work environment is providing an ad-hoc wireless network called 'Free wireless internet'. I can connect to this network using my (firewalled, unix) laptop, but don't get a functional internet connection when I do this. I see numerous similar networks (sometimes 'Free wifi') when using my laptop at airports. Is this the result of a virus? If so, which one?

Growl plugins for Camino, iPhoto, Xcode
Growl is a cool tool for Mac OS X that provides notifications when an application needs your attention. If you start using Growl, you will probably find that you become totally dependent on it...
...and then you will be sad that a few of your favourite apps don't support it.
To fill this gap, I have written Growl plugins for the
Camino web browser, Apple's iPhoto and Apple's Xcode. They provide notifications when slow operations (downloads, compilations) have finished.

Why are my wireless routers flakey? I have a Comcast cable modem, which I use with a wireless router to create both wired and wireless networks. I have tried 3 (!) different wireless (802.11b/g, WEP) routers (Belkin F5D7230-4, Netgear WGR614, Apple Airport Extreme). In each case, the wired connection has been stable, but the wireless signal periodically disappears without warning. It's not just an interference issue, because power-cycling the router fixes it immediately.

Seeking recommendations for international shipping/moving companies. I have a small household's-worth to ship from California to the UK (no furniture that's worth keeping, but a large studio full of stuff). There are many companies online but I know from friends' experiences that these waters are shark-infested.

Why don't Bay Area mosquitos bite me? Last year, in Desolation Wilderness (CA), the air was thick with mosquitos, and I was bitten liberally and painfully. This year, in my apartment in the Bay Area, the air is again thick with mosquitos and I am without noticeable bites. Why?

Is the definition of 'terror' as 'Violence committed or threatened by a group to intimidate or coerce a population, as for military or political purposes' a recent development, or a regional variation?
