Is this the start of William Gibson's wonderfully imagined off-world clans? Man, that guy had the 21st century figured out pretty good, didn't he?

MeFi post: Verdict in Hans Reiser Murder Trial
As I understand the events in court, Reiser would've been convicted of voluntary manslaughter at worst if he hadn't insisted on taking the stand himself. His lawyers advised against it in the strongest possible terms because they obviously knew that he'd get up there and go straight into the "I'm a genius and you're all idiots" routine that he's famous for but ultimately, they had no choice but to stand and watch while he gathered the wood, built the gallows,... MeFi post: # The thunder of his own guns filled him with stupid wonder.
Something about The Stand "talks" to me in a way that few of King's other books have done (with the possible exception of Insomnia). Guess that's part of the nature of art - inexplicable personal attachments to books, paintings, music that transcend the most vehement criticism. I have a similar "relationship" with Chris Squire's Fish Out Of Water album. Go figure.

I just couldn't get to... [more]

MeFi post: Hellraisers on F1 wheels
F1 these days is sanitised, squeaky clean and safe. Too safe in fact. I remember reading an interview with Stirling Moss (I think - if I'm mis-attributing I apologise Sir Stirling) where he said that safety is the reason there are no real F1 heroes any more. Back in the day, when making a bad mistake meant almost certain death there was a genuine mystique about the drivers, these handsome playboys who chose to risk their lives on a regular basis for little more than the pure... MeFi post: Italian Prog
Hell yes - Goblin! They created some of the most evocative and downright spooky soundtrack music for Dario Argento. Profondo Rosso is my favorite but Suspiria is a close second. They also made an important contribution to Romero/Argento's Dawn Of The Dead (on the European version, anyway - I believe that a slightly different soundtrack was used in the US?)

On the back of my teenage Italian splatter movie obsession I bought one of Claudio Simonetti's solo albums - what a... [more]

While some guys stay in the cyclo trials world, most of the current world motorcycle trials competitors (including current world champ Toni Bou and ex-word champ Adam Raga) are ex-cycle trials champions.

Trials is the next big "extreme" sport to take off, I'm convinced of that. I can't believe it's still one of the least commercial professional sports on the planet.

I appreciate there's a cultural difference and all that but let me get this straight: That kid was out in the woods, alone, wielding a .50 calibre handgun?

MeFi post: Driving a pick-up truck with "Man Love Rules OK" across Alabama
Listen, the guys on Top Gear pull shit like this all the time and believe it or not, there was some context and precedence to last night's show. Not much context apart from "Clarkson doesn't like America" but it really was part of a longer-running story and and only partially intended to poke fun at the dumb ol' rednecks.

I think the point (if there was one) was to point out that in most places you can paint whatever you want on your car and people will simply... [more]

Ex-fuckin-actly. I smoke, quite a lot actually, and I WANT to quit. But apparently I don't want it quite enough because every attempt to kick the fags* has failed so far. Just banning smoking will not stop people smoking, it's as simple as that and all these city officials are doing is... [more]

MeFi post: On the Edge of Blade Runner
BR is a beautiful movie and I believe that Vangelis' score is responsible for a disproportionate amount of that beauty, even when compared to other movies with "classic" soundtracks.

When BR was first released in the UK I immediately went out and bought the soundtrack album only to find that it was comprised of orchestral arrangements of the original electronic score. This was disappointing until I listened to "Bladerunner Blues" played on flugelhorn... [more]

MeFi post: Stephen Fry and Bipolar Disorder
Ditto infobomb's comments: I always think of Fry as the popular face of British intellectualism. By which I mean that he effectively transcends the snootiness traditionally associated with apparently upper-class thinkers (I have no idea whether Fry is indeed a toff, just that he comes off that way). In any case, there's no doubt he's an asset to the country when it comes to media-projected British image.

Why on earth didn't that guy tune his guitar first?

A Clapton-esque attempt at bluegrass authenticity? The guy can obviously play so I can't believe there's any other reason apart from maybe a problem with the recording. I vote for the latter since there are also a couple of big band unison sections where the intonation grates more than a little.

MeFi post: It's like 10 000 spoons when all you need is a knife
I know you've gotta make allowances for the fact that the authors are trying to be fashionably indie-snarky and all that but while there ARE some classic examples in there, many are "bad" simply because they're taken out of context. That's an easy way to make almost any lyrics sound ridiculous.

Having said that, any lyricist who uses the phrase "like a knife" (following "life", "wife" etc.) deserves to be forced to write down all... [more]

Coldplay don't produce music, they produce muzak. It doesn't provoke any emotional response, it's just... there. Bland, safe and a useful tool for minor-league "celebrities" when they're asked what music they're into during magazine interviews and need an utterly "safe" response but still want to appear to be "down with the kids." As foot pointed out, this was a role previously occupied by pre-Disney era Phil Collins and Queen before him. IMO.

There *is* a way to put an end to world's problems - once and for all. And not much longer than that before the spooks standing in the wings start to get itchy trigger fingers. Bush/Paxman... if that ever happens (and it won't, not while Bush is still president anyway), it'd be remembered for a long time.

Probably as the day when UK/US relations started to seriously deteriorate...

c is a measurement of both velocity and time. Assuming that the speed of light did change (which according to all current theory it can't), the physical distance between object wouldn't change but our perception of that distance might (compared to what we perceive now with our universal constant of c). But since c is fundamental to the way we see our universe and the means by which we exist, such comparisons are ultimately meaningless.

This stuff makes my head hurt.

I'm not anti-cellphone as such since like others have attested, they can (literally) be life-savers in emergency situations and my own has got me out of trouble on a couple of occasions.
