Brazil v. Argentina?
I've been to both in the past year. For me, Buenos Aires by a wide margin.
I liked many things about Sao Paulo-great food, amazing beer (i've become a chopp junkie), truly cosmopolitan population, but the physical city itself really is blah, the museums are kind of mediocre. To me the traffic is unbelievably atrocious (and I live in Mexico City), most people live in secure towers, and the crime is no joke. The brazilians I know shake it off as the "poverty... [more]

E-book reader that will handle fuzzy PDFs
I think the Iliad would come the closest, by virtue of the size and resolution of the screen. But I have never handled one personally. I do have the Sony Reader, but that is too small for what you want to do.

From Threadless to Serious Threads, FAST
Unless you want to be constantly on the lookout for sales, drive/take the bus to Woodbury Commons upstate. There's a Barney's outlet (they usually have a lot of Varvatos there), a Saks outlet, Theory, etc. Will definitely hurt your wallet less there.
Also, might be worth it to swing by Century 21 downtown. But it has been in decline the past few years, definitely a crapshoot.

Inspect your gadgets
Seconding n95 US variant. Camera is great, screen is big, and they really did speed up the interface. Web browsing is inferior to iPhone, but the rest of the features as mentioned above, 3g, voip capabilities (via gizmo project, or skype via fring), real gps navigation, replaceble battery, and data tethering really outclass it for serious road use.

Craigslist flagging
You seem angry wfrgms. Perhaps a relaxing session with a CraigsList prostitute will relieve you of your righteous indignation.

First visit to DF
The other thread is pretty comprehensive, but I'll recommend some things I've discovered in the 6 months I've been living here.
On Thursday night, go to a place called Cantina Covadonga in Colonia Roma. On most other days, it is full of older gents playing dominos with their pals and people watching a soccer game, but on Thursday evenings the young hipsters descend and it is quite a scene, a mix of young and old you don't see back in the states. It's probably one of my... [more]

Looking for the video conversion gods to smile favorably upon me
There's an official divx player for S60 i've been using (on N81). There is also a Divx converter (I got it for free, I don't know if it is still available or if you need to pay) which is simple drag and drop conversion. In the past it was a bitch converting video for the mercurial S60, but this combo is fool-proof. Read up here...

Pay at the Pump
Here in Mexico City, it's been such a problem that in most restaurants they actually bring a handheld card machine to your table and process the transaction right in front of you. So yes, the tech is out there to grab your info when your card is out of sight, but I don't know if it is as common north of the border.

Tough lovin' is hard on a cell phone
Funny, I just met a reporter at a holiday party who has been working in war zones the last several years, and he swears by his Nokia 6310i. Definitely no frills, but a beast and can probably be had for cheap on ebay.

Which laptop to buy?
Another mac user for the Thinkpad X series. The macbook isn't an ultraportable and overpriced for your needs. I inherited my girlfriends two-year-old X40 so I wouldn't have to haul the 17" MBP around for casual browsing, and as much as using windows gives me the heebie-jeebies, it is a kick ass, solid little machine.

iPhone Unlock Updates
Telcel is talking with Apple now, but who knows if/when a deal will be done. I don't think it will be too long. It might be worth it to wait a bit longer and at least see if the updates break the unlock.

Umm, many thanks for the science lecture Steven. Where was that store again?
What about one of these things? They're like $35 on ebay, but I need to find it locally as I can't wait for delivery. Are you all telling me it just wouldn't work? Because then I'll just get him a new NTSC Wii...

Japanese Language Instruction in New York
To actually answer your question, I've taken Japanese classes there several years ago. I believe the texts we used were the "Japanese for Busy People" series, but that possibly could have changed by now. The classes were nice and small (max 7-8 people), it was a beautiful environment to study in, and the teachers were all extremely kind, professional and helpful. I highly recommend at least trying it out...

Where in Shea does the mezzanine roof start?
I just sat in Section 11, row J on the mezzanine for one of the Twins games. There was no obstruction at all. From the angle, it looked like you could go up several more before it became a problem, but I can't give you a hard cut off...

Good TV series and epic movies
Just watched a great miniseries on DVD, Commanding Heights. The site will give you details, but it is an economic history of the 20th and 21st century- generally the story of state controlled economies vs. free markets and the thinkers who represented those movements. Academics may find some aspects of it problematic, but for a layman like myself it was unbelievably fascinating and eye opening and the reason I am reading every book on Keynes I can get my hands on.... Where oh where have my beloved pants gone?
A.P.C. Sure they're expensive, but for the tall and skinny they are the best cut jeans I've ever had. And they look as good as they cost. They have a store in Tokyo, and they are probably sold somewhere in San Fran, but I wouldn't know where....

Mid-range steak house in NYC?
I've been to Luger's several times, it's definitely more than I'm comfortable asking him to pay. But the bistro idea is spot on, I don't know why I hadn't thought of that. I think I'll just take him to Les Halles or Raoul's. Thanks for the input, all.

Is flying on LTU asking for trouble?
Well, here's one data point. Connecting flight in Dusseldorf to New York on LTU. I had never heard of them before, but the price was right. Delayed @ Dusseldorf for three hours, for no apparent reason. They gave me a voucher for a soda pop, and I had to like it. Airplanes are minimally furnished, but relatively new. They don't seem like the tightest operation out there, but what airline really is. At the end of the day, is the additional $1000 really going to buy you any kind of guarantee?

Photoshop: clean up newsprint background?
Phire has it. The rightmost arrow in the levels window indicates, of the image data, what point in the grayscale will be 100% white. By moving the slider towards the middle, you are forcing those slightly darker show-throughs to become 100% white, giving you a nice clean result.
You don't mention if you're doing any more scanning, but in the future if scanning a light page with black text/images on back, it's best to lay a black piece of paper behind it. It makes the... [more]
