MeFi post: Shift Option Rinse
I do this with my Model M keyboards. But the keyboard should go on the top rack, and the keycaps do need to be covered so they can't escape.

Also, you don't need so much soap, and they keyboard should be dried upside-down.

MeFi post: The Final Frontier
Who cares if you don't make it into the history books? You still get to go into space..

I, for one, am happy that rich people are subsidizing the initial costs. This is the very early stage of something very, very big.

Thanks, flarbuse. Until now, I thought anthropomorphism was blasphemy. Now I know better.

stbalbach - It wasn't a big deal when clark.net oversold, but we aren't all using dial up connections these days. If I pay for an 8 mbit downstream connection, I do not expect it to be 8 mbit only when nobody else is using the capacity. My Internet connection is on all the time now.

If the ISPs want to limit bandwidth, why don't they tell us what the limit is? Put it in the contract, or on the web page, or somewhere. They should not be surprised when someone actually... [more]

I eat meat. I love meat. I eat fish, I eat chicken, I eat all sorts of animals.

I used to go vegetarian every year on January 1. It never, ever worked. I know vegetarians, I have read the books, I take my vitamins. I even cook most of my own food. But I was just so damned tired that I never made it past the third week.

I would always end up with a big, juicy steak. I would feel no guilt, only relief.

loquacious - If for some reason you ever end up with some extra freefall time on your hands, one of the most unnatural feeling things you can do is to just track in one direction and look at the ground.

I did this on my first solo freefall - tracking in a slow circle and watching the airport spin around below. Still my most memorable jump.

kaseijin - I think the same thing when I see a really, really bad movie. At some point, somebody thought it was a good idea, and convinced other people it was worth investing in. Someone that was involved in it is probably proud of at least one part of it, and likely brags about it. That flash movie is probably no different.

MeFi post: $$$...
I find it odd that everybody here seems to care. Are you really going to rely on social security when you retire? No matter how you calculate things, it is essentially a large scale ponzi scheme.

I'm 32, I've been working for 18 years, and I don't count on getting one cent from the government when I retire.

One day, this system will fail. There is no guarantee, and there is no trust fund.
posted to MetaFilter by bh at 1:31 PM on February 17, 2005
kyrademon - I call it a ponzi scheme because it relies on an ever-increasing number of participants to keep it running. Barring that, it requires a reduction in payouts, or an increase in taxes.

With an insurance policy, a large group of people pay in a certain amount based on the odds of something bad happening. With social security, a large group of people pay a certain amount to another large group of people. The 'odds' in this case are how long retired people... [more]

teece - So what am I missing? Do you object to my referring to SS as a ponzi scheme? Technically, it is not. But the systems are very similar. You need an ever-increasing tax base to pay out on SS. As more people retire and live longer, the system costs more. The math on this is basic.

Both systems rely on bringing in more people to pay to support those that are getting paid. SS will just take a little bit longer to collapse.

TheOnlyCoolTim - Probably. For some reason growing lights are only used by marijuana farmers, at least in the eyes of the police. Never mind that lots of people use them for aquariums and growing regular plants.

I used to use a HPS lamp for my hot peppers (when I had no lawn). I now have it in storage, because I have kids, and the last thing I need is some idiot knocking down my door because the inside of my house is too bright.

Fortunately, I now have a lawn.

It is also illegal for me to pave my driveway. I'm getting sick of only having rocks. They end up on the lawn, in the road, and pretty much everywhere BUT my driveway. I think the federal government should pay to have my driveway paved immediately.

Oh, wait. It's not illegal? But if it isn't illegal, why won't the federal government pay for it? It is in the best interest of my family, my neighbors, and everyone that drives on the road that might get hit by an... [more]

Are you (obtusely) suggesting the government shouldn't fund scientific research, bh? I suppose you could make an idealistic minimal government case for this position, but in real terms it would mean a train wreck for the U.S. economy and university system.

thedevildancedlightly - No time here, either. But one thing worth mentioning - If the government could spend money on research that actually helped the public at large, and didn't benefit specific interests and certain drug companies, then I can see that argument holding water. Any research done with government money should be in the public domain. As long as taxpayers fund anything that benefits only large corporations, I'm against all funding.

If the government said that you could not live alone in an apartment, what would you think?

What if you had to finish your dinner, even if you weren't hungry?

How about reducing your time in the shower? Surely you could clean yourself faster.

These solutions all solve problems, but are obtrusive. The traffic problem is admittedly a large one, but why should we take ridiculous steps just for a temporary fix? Do people... [more]

sic - As someone who worked in the financial sector during y2k remediation, I can tell you that it definitely was not a hoax. Banks were not allowed to talk about how serious the problem was because so as not to cause a panic.

sic - People panic about just about anything these days. I didn't think that any planes were going to fall out of the sky, but I was one of the people that moved a little bit further away from civilization, just in case there were large problems in the financial markets.

My largest concern was the power grid. But like the financial sector, they weren't talking, and I only had second hand knowledge confirming that things would be fine. So when I was moving (mid 1998),... [more]

teece: I do not think that the US government is an entity that can be trusted. However, I do expect them to pay back the bonds.

Of course, someone has to pay for the bonds. The money has to come from somewhere, and it isn't from some giant pool of money just waiting to be tapped. The money will come in the form of more taxes.

People seem to think that the 'trust fund' is some giant account that you pay into, and withdraw from later in life... [more]

I've typed and deleted dozens of paragraphs. It just isn't worth it.

I'll believe reality shows when I see a real version of Survivor. A bunch of people, stuck somewhere, with nothing but knives.

Rules: No killing the others, and cross over this line if you think you are going to die. Last person to cross wins.

No games, no competitions, no teams, no food, no nothing. Just you and your knife.

I'd sign up for that show, actually.

Why should only gay students have this sort of protection? What about the nerds, the the fat kids, the ugly kids, etc?

While I agree this whole thing is nuts, why should any group get any more protection than any other?

I can't take a bad movie site seriously if it doesn't list Time Chasers, Beneath the Bermuda Triangle, or, at the very least, Cannibal! The Musical.
