Why can I never dial a phone in my dreams? I'm looking for possible biological/neurological explanations, like the
hypnic jerk instead of dream interpretation (i.e.: "You feel you have trouble communicating").

I'm having a birthday pool party (indoor) with a group of 20 kindergarten-age kids. They'll be in the water most of the time, but they'll be in a charming little holding cell for the first part of the party. Any suggestions for an activity or craft that would work well in this situation?

Can I marinate beef past the sell-by date? I've bought a piece of chuck pot roast and just made the marinade for Mark Bittman's Vinegar-Marinated Pot Roast recipe. Bittman's recipe suggest marinating the meat for up to 3 days; the date on the package comes due is in two. Will the marinade, made up primarily of wine and vinegar, allow the meat to last past the date (and I have no idea if it's a sell-by or serve-by date - I'm recently eating beef again after about a 13 year hiatus), or should I plan on cooking this tomorrow?
Ideally, I'd like to cook this on Thursday, but I don't want to kill my family.

I'm putting together a care package for a friend of mine who just bought her first condo, and I'd like to include some music. My mixtape muse has fled, and I need suggestions for songs about real estate, houses, condos, mortgages - you know, the usual stuff of melodic inspiration.

I need ideas on how to ameliorate the experience of flying across the country with a toddler and a baby. I'll be the only adult and will be holding my baby in my lap. Any advice, besides "Don't do it?"

I’d be interested in hearing people’s experiences with letting their baby cry him/herself to sleep. After 5 months of (literally) almost constant contact with an infant, I’m starting to falter.

I need suggestions for decorative plants I can grow in a small, clear vase with just water, no soil (and that can withstand my black thumb).

Sugar=heroin?: Is sugar really strongly physically addictive, or are these claims just the latest novelty from the diet industry?

Did you ever stay in bed all day reading a particularly compelling book? What titles have made you completely anti-social, shunning the outside world until you finish them - books that leave you almost jetlagged after you're through with them? I'm nearing the end of my pregnancy and have been placed on bedrest for the next few weeks, and the novelty has worn off. I need suggestions for titles that will make staying in bed 24/7 much more tolerable.

My Bravo bagless vacuum cleaner, which I bought for around 80 bucks to clean the one carpeted room in my house, is making scary noises. Should I take it to a vacuum repair shop for a check/tune-up, or are lower end models like mine not worth the cost of repair?

A friend of mine has requested me to track down a television show she has a dim memory of seeing as a child. She thought it might be a
Night Gallery episode, but the ep guides that I've looked at haven't yielded anything that sounds promising.

I'm thinking about buying a bread machine. Should I pony up the extra cash for an expensive brand like the Zojirushi? Is anyone happy with a less expensive model? (please say yes)

For the past two days, I've heard and felt repeated popping noises/sensations in my nose, sort of like I shoved some pop rocks up there (I didn't) . Yesterday, they were distracting; today, they are slightly painful and coupled with a miserable sinus headache. What the hell's going on up there?

I need advice on energy-bestowing foods. I'm currently in my 5th month of pregnancy, I work full time, I have a toddler, and I am about to drop. I'd like some suggestions (and preferably recipes) for foods that might up my energy level, so I can drop the zombie mom routine. [+]
