Ask post: Tell me about current NAS manufacturers and technology?
I've been using a Buffalo Terastation for semi-intensive photo work for a little over a year and a half now. Nightly backups (via rsync), streaming data (movies, music, but still puts the IO hit on decently). It's in use close to 24x7.

It is native RAID 5, samba/nfs/ftp configuration. It has just worked flawlessly.
Buy.com usually has a sale on these things. They're reliable and solid. I'd easily recommend them for small to mid size... [more]

Ask post: How to photograph the elderly to be not just flattering but to show fitness and health?
Firstly, if you're doing it for a magazine, have you considered the licensing rights?
You'll want more information from them, such as their average run (issues, coverage), how big the image is, if they want reprints, and several other things.
This link can give you a little information on media licensing

As to the actual pay for the photography, don't undercut yourself. Try to break it... [more]

Ask post: Practice makes perfect
As an aspiring photographer, I do several things.

I flip through every catalog I come across, just looking at photos. If I find one that's particularly interesting, I'll try to dissect what makes it interesting.
What lens did they use? What type of lighting? What type of mood did that create?
I'll often shoot something similar, just to get some practice with it, then see what I can do with it to change it around.
I read blogs,... [more]

1:1 picture of a vending machine. Paste it on the front.
Either the coke machine, or the candy machine.

While this might not help, it will decorate.

Ask post: Good camera equipment for nature photography?
You're in San Francisco. Have you considered renting equipment?

As everyone else has said, go for a long lens, and a monopod or tripod. Shooting handheld at 300mm aint the easiest thing, especially if you're not familiar with the gear.

It looks like Calumet rents in SF. Might check them out.

Ask post: My First Commission.
Thanks to everyone that's responded, and thanks for the compliments.

I submitted an estimate based on several factors, and some of the advice that was suggested.

I'm also picking up a copy of the book that krautland suggested.

Ask post: Something is spewing files on our box
I've always been partial to

cd
for i in *;do ls $i;done

That way it doesn't try to buffer it all into memory at once, it runs it a command at a time. Pretty lightweight.
I use it to comb through directories of 250,000+ files.

Find can be kind of CPU intensive.

Ask post: Help with some translation into webdesign lingo
Try smugmug? I've been very happy with it.
You can customize the pro accounts pretty easily. I'm having a designer do that for my photography site, and I'll continue to use the smugmug interface to organize galleries.

I've been using em for almost 2 years, and I just went the pro route, so I can get the domain/customization going.

Hit me up if you've got any questions. Email is in the profile.

Ask post: In the blink of an eye.
I love metafilter!
I've got a couple idead for a photo class this semester, and one of them required a sound trigger. So I come here and see this post.

So I just ordered one of these -

I'll let ya know what I figure out!

Well, I got the kit in, built it, and it works.
I'm going to do a photoshoot with it next week. I'll post a link to the images.

Further update, in case anyone is reading this.
50 balloons, and the sound trigger works. Now the issue is with the flash power. I'm getting access to a studio flash today, so I'll try more tests this weekend.

Ask post: Bizarre Linux Networking Problem
This sounds like default RedHat behavior.

Check your /etc/mail/sendmail.cf for the DaemonPortOptions string.

It'll most likely be something like this -

O DaemonPortOptions=Port=smtp,Addr=127.0.0.1, Name=MTA

That makes sendmail only listen on the loopback address.

Change that to something more like this -

O DaemonPortOptions=Name=MTA

What else isn't listening correctly, or is it just sendmail/port 25?

Ask post: Please help me find a place to live temporarily in Austin, TX.

It sounds like what you want is either Hyde Park, or Barton Springs area.
I currently have a place in Barton Springs, for a pretty good rate (it's getting expensive, but it's still possible to find a good deal).

There are several co-ops off of S Lamar.

Have you checked Craigslist? Or posted an ad, looking for sublet? I know a lot of people who have found residence through there.

Hope you... [more]

Drunk and go seek. Instead of counting to 10 (or 100, or whatever), take a couple shots.

The ever popular 3 legged race/sack race to an obstacle/drink, then come back.

Beer pong is always popular.

Ask post: Austin, TX recommendations
I'm a fan of the "warehouse district," which has gotten increasingly busy in the last few years.

My favorite beer joint is the Gingerman.

There's also the bitter end/bsides.

Holy hell. Bitter end is gone? I had some great memories there.

I dig Fado's as well. Pretty typical "Irish Pub in America" place.

I gotta mention Lovejoys, which looks like it's closing in March of next year.
604 Neches. See if they have their Espresso Stout. One of the finest brews I've ever had.

A couple other places of note.

Ask post: favorite horror movies?
I'm gonna throw my lot in for The Thing.
There's just something about being unable to escape in an arctic wasteland that doesn't sit well with me.

I was also genuinely disturbed by In the Mouth of Madness, but that was 10 or so years ago. I should really give that a rewatch.

I've made it a habit to rent any/all horror movies I come across. I've seen Audition, Ichi the Killer, and a few of Mikke's other movies. While not scary,... [more]

Ask post: It is not enough to obey him...
I have known admins that enjoy the darker side of monitoring. They get a kick out of letting you know they're in power. I usually either leave these places quickly, or am asked to replace them.
I subscribe more to the "my users are adults" and will get work done before playing. I've had the pleasure of mostly working for smaller companies that can afford to be a little more lax on the paranoia.

But a good admin can see what you're doing through... [more]
