Ask post: What's normal in the first few weeks of AA
Just to let you know that when I quit drinking, I was pretty sick for at least three weeks. Not DT sick but aching and I had a very hard time regulating my body temp and I was just miserable. Oh and the dreams, man the crazy crazy dreams. I drank daily but not a lot every day so yeah, all bodies are different and people respond to drugs/withdrawal differently. Um I'm a female who quit drinking at age 29 if that helps. Also I think they call that the "pink cloud" when people get all... [more]

Ask post: Vet Trachea Specialists?
This is what my pug actually died from, not the congestive heart failure that I was so concerned about. The vet tried her on some medications that supposedly can help but we never saw an improvement and finally had to put her down as the suffering became overwhelming. I took her to several specialists and no one had any good news about trachea collapse BUT she was 13 and already ill so that may play a role. I hope you find something to help, every time our new pug makes a snorting noise I get... [more]

Ask post: Cat just starting Lasix - how long before I should see effects?
It took the vet bumping up the dose for my pug to get any relief but once the dose was correct, it was very fast. Right before she died the vet gave us the wrong dose on a refill (the lasix) and I noticed a difference almost immediately, it's quite a powerful diuretic. I was never very sure what part the enalapril was playing in her treatment, I mean I understand what it's supposed to do but it seemed like it was really the lasix that made the big difference in her quality of life. I'd say if... [more]

Ask post: I'm bored and hungry in Denver - please help.
I like going to the tattered cover on Colfax, I think a bus goes there. Bus info I'd take you to the Celestial Seasonings tour, that was one of the more fun things I've done in the year I've lived here. Oh there are also two cupcake shops on Colfax, I love me some cupcakes.

Ask post: I need car buying advice please
Thank you for the link wfrgms, but I guess I'm looking for more personal experiences to add to what I've read. Not to mention two different articles often say opposite things and like I mentioned, I'm not savvy with the car buying. I know no one here in Denver, well a boyfriend and some class-mates but no family no close friends, no car helpers. I've seen REALLY old Hondas in my price range, but I was scared of the age. Not so much a worry then? I can totally drive a stick, my first car was... [more]

Ask post: time to start learning the banjo?
I had a failed root canal pulled about 15 years ago, back molar. No problems at all and none of my other teeth have been affected, certainly no dropping down of the top tooth above it. It was such a huge relief to get it pulled after all the issues, I so do not regret it.

Ask post: How can I best honor the memory of my pup?
I too recently lost my elderly dog. For some reason I was dead set against having her ashes and now I sort of regret it. But I did take her personal things, harness, leash, her blankie and put them in a pretty box that I keep on my dresser. I take out her photos frequently and just, I don't know, think about her. I also opted to get a new rescue dog way earlier than I would have thought but she has turned out to be such a huge comfort. She in no way replaces Reba but instead lets me do... [more]

Ask post: Driving across country where to stay (no hotels).
I've done this a few time (female, alone) and I slept in rest areas BUT I would sleep during the day and drive at night since it felt safer to be sleeping during day light hours for some reason. Also, truck stops were always cool with car sleepers as far as I could tell.

Ask post: Help me grieve for my pug
I have a question Rock Steady, I was holding her when they put the injection in her cath and (maybe unfortunately??) I was staring down into her eyes. I saw them dilate almost immediately and it just really freaked me out. I suspect it's just the side effect of dying but it LOOKED like she got really scared. I keep replaying it in my head and I don't know, I guess I just want some assurance that she wasn't actually scared....

Thank you everyone, I knew somehow that I'd feel less "silly" for being so upset over my dog here. I really wish that I felt that I 100% ok with the decision but of course, I do not. The Banfield vets kept telling me that we could try different drugs that maybe would help and I should put in the hospital on oxygen and take her to a cardiologist and on and on...All the while my adorable sassy dog was unable to walk, eat or poop and couldn't be held or picked up by me since it made her... Ask post: Need opinions on Oregon, Portland areas..
I just moved to Denver from Portland and honestly, I think Portland is a million times better. Denver is dirty and the weather, while sunny, is a lot more extreme temperature wise. Public transportation here is way worse than Portland both in cost and usability. My neighborhood barely has sidewalks. Groceries cost a lot more plus the sales tax to general costs of living. People in Portland always seem somehow nicer and I didn't think that mattered to me since I'm from Flint, MI but turns... [more]

Ask post: It's not you, it's your dog.
Well now I have dogs and while I'd want to know if they were doing anything harmful to you, i.e. biting or jumping up, I would not care too much about drooling or even crotch sniffing. That's just how dogs are and if you come to my house, you are entering THEIR territory. I cannot explain to them that this one person does not like them and they need to act totally different. Sorry, they get to drool on me so that's just the house rules. I would not be offended, if you as my friend, found this... [more]

Ask post: What's that smell? Oh, it's my eyeballs crisping.
I had LASIK last year. My left eye is really bad still, halo, blurry, can't see to drive very well at all. I had the surgery in another state so thus far I've not been able to get back for a correction. My right eye is great so it seems to compensate but still, I cannot see very well to drive at night. I cry a lot, wear make-up sometimes, have allergies, take a lot of OTC meds for said allergies, sleep with dogs who shed, directly into my eyeballs if they can, and have no issues with smoke... I also used flashcards and and took photos of the body parts that were labeled in lab. I was not allowed to photograph the cadavers though and there are a lot of muscles to learn. Ask post: Elvis be gone!
Are you in Portland, Or by the way? I know there is a very nice, mentally challenged man who hangs out downtown who does his version of Elvis. I would be horrified if someone supersoaked him! I also know from experience that talking to him, while interesting, is not likely to accomplish anything concrete. So if this is your Elvis, or you have a similar Elvis, I'd really go with some sort of noise reduction technique that you can control ie earphones, noise machine and so on. And if you give... [more]

Ask post: Tips for a long cross-country drive?
I just drove from Portland to Denver last week and it ended up taking me 3 days due to I-80 being closed as well as super scary blowing snowstorms, icy roads, and slow slow trucks over mountain passes pretty much the whole way. I was also driving alone and found that after 12 hours of concentrating on not skidding to my doom, I was exhausted. I hate books on tape but a wide selection of music is good plus I like scanning through the local radio stations, just to see what's going on in a given... [more]

Little America is a truck stop in Wyoming that advertises itself for hundreds of miles. Totally gets you psyched up for $.25 ice cream cone and then turns out to be a pit of despair. It has it's own highway exit though so that makes me laugh. Of course, I'm extraordinarily easily amused.

Ask post: Cat with a nose bleed?
Not to be a bummer but this happened on and off to our cat for a few weeks before the vet finally figured out that she had sinus cancer. We used to smoke in the house back when she was a kitten so I assume that's what caused it. She had to be put down shortly after the diagnosis but until then large doses of vitamin K helped keep her from spewing bloody sneezes all over the house.

I'll be gone from 1/11-1/18 and since I have no car of my own, I have car insurance of my own. I'm not sure that the drive is "hazardous" but it is long and I'll be traveling through several mountain ranges in mid January; with a dying pug for half of it. So much stress....
