MeFi post: Mr. Mom
One final clarifying note I'd like to add to the discussion of gender binaries is that while gender identity/presentation often correlates with reproductive capabilities, they are not the same.

MeFi post: Susie Bright on Stalagim
I've been making "you be the Palestinian photojournalist & I'll be the Israeli border guard" jokes in bed with my partner for a couple years now. I'm glad* to see there're special genres out there just for us.

*and by 'glad' I mean dismayed & creeped out, but unsurprised.

MeFi post: But each time he hit the button next to the candidate, the Republican choice showed up.
Ericb, I was just about to post that Hugo Chavez link. It's much more substantiated than the typical "[lefty/Islamic] radicals did it!" fingerpointing our administration's gotten so good at, though still pretty tenuous-feeling to me.

Any idea what these mystery symbols on the facade of North Mart are?

What a great post! One of my great regrets about living in Japan is that I didn't try to go here (via bribing fisherman, wiles, etc).

MeFi post: Mmm, nipple fruit ...
What does 58 days from transplant (for example) mean?

The plant will start to bear fruit (or flowers if it's ornamental) 58 days from transplant (this assuming you plant in lil' pots & transplant a week or two after they've sprouted--which in many cases is necessary due to a growing season limited by cold weather, and also because growing in pots is "gentler").

Why is it that some people must feel... [more]

Samizdata, re: the rototiller, they actually compact the soil. There's no substitute for double-digging, though your sore muscles may not agree. :)

MeFi post: Arm-chair travel for the work-bound
I'm not usually very impressed with these travel journal sites, and this one's navigational interface seems totally unintuitive at first. Still, I'm a sucker for travel journals & I really like the crisscrossing-the-world map you end up with if you actually make journal entries..

By way of demonstration, he emitted a batlike squeak that was indeed bothersome.

Why is it this reads exactly like sketch comedy news reports?

MeFi post: World Beard Championships
I was at the Idaho championships in Ketchum (as a non-bearded spectator) last April. There was a pretty amazing dichotomy between people like myself who were there & competing for the heck of it, and people who were like "I love going to the world championships because the networking potential in the moustache community is so amazing!"

Moustache community?!

MeFi post: Up, up, and oy, vey!
Not the Marvel route, but when I was a youngster I used to get tons of Hassidic children's magazines, some of which featured a few panels of Super Neshoma (Hebrew: soul) battling the Yetzer Hora (evil intentions/temptation) in the cut-away view of some unsuspecting Hebrew School kid's heart. There was also a full-length comic involving the messiah and two lil' kids zooming around the galaxy in a cosmic red Volkswagen, performing miracles.

Of course, none of this holds a... [more]

MeFi post: It's a dog's life in today's army.
With thousands of people homeless or in poverty in the US alone, I fail to see how this donation is in any way justifiable. There are many more dire situations going on at home & around the world, and this seems like a colossal "easy way out" of not addressing problems happening in our own neighborhoods in the interest of focusing on a more morally uncomplicated issue. Ugh.

MeFi post: How Walmart Is Destroying America And The World: And What You Can Do About It
Have you been to a walmart? People don't go to walmart because it's cool.

Having grown up in a small Texan town (25k) with not much going for it (no bars worth going to, no late-night restaurants, nowhere to see live music that isn't the city convention center), after class at the junior college half the people I knew headed over to Wal-mart to say hi to friends who worked there, meet up with other friends in the parking lot, maybe go get high &... MeFi post: yum ice cream
The oddest ice cream I've ever had was from a stand in a half-abandoned amusement park in Ulan Baatar, Mongolia. I'd seen the ferris wheels from far away, and they looked so dingy I expected the park to be closed; but up close, there were teenagers on dates, kids buying balloons, bums sleeping in the grass with their feet propped on benches (then: policemen kicking them awake). I rode a pedal-it-yourself rollercoaster on a single track 8 feet off the ground that lurched dangerously to one side... [more]

MeFi post: Hitchhikers Guide to the Planet
I've hitched in nine countries, three solo (& female), and would recommend it to almost anyone. I've been lucky enough to be picked up by touring bands; whole families spanning 3 generations in Japan; a Sami radio journalist going to hunt moose in northern Finland; a family who let me stay at their house for two days at Hammerfest, Norway, the northernmost city in the world; a bus converted into a traveling store that visited asylum-seekers' camps all over northern Norway; truckers who... Hell, I'm 24 & I've hit the hitchhiking thing, ChrisR!

For potential hitchers scared of the dangers of getting in an anonymous car, an easy solution is to hitch from gas stations or service stops along state highways: you can approach people after they've gotten gas or stopped for a bathroom break, and if you're clean-cut & friendly, they'll consider your request much more seriously than if they've got 5 seconds to decide when they pass you at an on-ramp.. (Of... [more]

MeFi post: Pro-nuance
Not sure if this gray area is quite germaine to the conversation, but in addition to not wanting a kid for another decade (or possibly ever), I know that at this point in my life, I'm not financially secure enough, patient enough, or prepared enough to be a good mother. Moreover, I could never in good faith give a child up to the care of the state.

Regardless of any ambivalence about abortion's morality, for me, an even larger moral issue is whether or not I'm fully... [more]

Wow, I remember reading this back when the Dead Jackie Susann Quarterly and Rita Hao's Sassy archive (via archive.org) were still being updated, and VRML worlds were just becoming un-hip.

Back when I had to walk seven miles uphill to school to use the internet, and seven miles uphill back home.... [more]

MeFi post: Recommendation network
Not being able to look past the first page, this sounds like an amazing idea because of what I hope it'd contain: so-and-so went to that Hungarian restaurant (or Georgian, or the Laotian under the table place) down by the river where all the abandoned factories are, and aside of getting chased by a dog in the junkyard across the street, she had the best bowtie noodles with jam and toasted poppyseeds she'd ever had, and drank some plum slivovitz and got so toasted she lost $3 to the owner's 12... Devils.. I think puzzledonkey meant to type something different than 'so...' because on Tuesday he asks about "Sameday delivery service" and FOUR days later (that part is important), he gets the delivery. Use babelfish if your French sucks as badly as mine!

MeFi post: Do you 'av your papers? Vhere are your papers?
Similar to what MightyNez said, a lot of people are questioning the validity of statements like "I am objecting to the flavour of mockery, sexism and homophobia which the experience carried." Though she may indeed be hypersensitive, remember this is a livejournal entry, probably intended for a very small group of people. Because she doesn't make the front page of metafilter often, she's probably not really preoccupied with providing substantive evidence..

The US government would go completely snakeshit.
And there would go the rest of our civil liberties. Just saw a mention on the news of the national ID system & retinal scanning soon to be implemented in Iraq. Guess where it'll be used next?

As a companion gift, get your special someone a stuffed black death microbe, or just athlete's foot, if you're feeling tame..

MeFi post: The Golden Age of Zines
Not so much a zine as a photocopied comic, Kevin Huizenga draws about ordinary life in the suburbs of of St Louis--with a hint of the absurd or a physics lesson thrown in when you least expect.. He's recently been "discovered" by Drawn & Quarterly (publishers of Chris Ware & Julie Doucet), who've released the stunning, fantastic D&Q Showcase #1, in which Huizenga chronicles the adventures of [mythical ordinary guy] Glenn Ganges' as he wanders the surreal landscape of 28th... MeFi post: Leviathan
Americans familiar with the nonplussing nature of American comics in the b&w pages may be into knowing that Blegvad's comic strips appear weekly in British papers--I think specifically the UK Guardian, though I'm not sure.

He's also behind amateur.org.uk,a site with some interesting art & poetic philosophizing that hasn't been updated since 2001.
