Ask post: Steve Jobs, SUP-er GEN-ius...
It does bog down the whole music system a bit, but I've gotten a few good lists out of it. I'll put it this way: if you get a list of 25 songs, about 15 will be REALLY good. The rest will be throwaway. To be fair, I've also made a few lists that are completely throwaway. It's a "neat" feature... I'm glad I turned it on for a bit, but I will probably just end up turning it off sooner rather than later. Bloat was a good word. Interesting, but not *that* interesting. Plus: I do... [more]

Katy: I purchased the domain through Namesecure.com How would I tell if it's "parked" or "hosted"?
posted to Ask Metafilter by indiebass at 1:31 PM on September 24, 2008
I am indeed paying something like $35 for 5 years. So I will assume I'm 'parked'. And I've looked all over the FAQ part of the site, but I don't think they have a service for wordpress setup. The main goal, I think, is that i'm trying not to put any additional $$$ into the project now, until it looks like there's a viability. The answer might be that it's impossible to make the website like I'd like to, and still have it be free.

Ask post: How to shave when "closeness" isn't an issue?
I've become a convert to the single-blade safety razor. I have a particularly tough beard and I find it gives me an amazingly close shave.

Your situation, it seems, could also benefit from the single-blade safety razor. They offer much less irritation (dragging one blade across your skin, as opposed to 3, 4 or 5 at a time) and the blades are infinitely cheaper.

If you aren't ready to swap your cartridge in, just yet, I'd at least highly... [more]

Ask post: How to get back to my natural color without losing hair
Talking to a hair-professional friend of mine, her advice is one of two things: one, yes... go to a pro and they'll be able to do what you pay them to do. That is, a return to normalcy. However, her advice - given that you've already stressed your hair so much and can't really afford a professional, is to ride it out and let your hair repair itself. Which, strictly speaking, won't really happen, BUT in the meantime you can wear some funky hats or something. Honestly, her... [more]

Ask post: Any ideas for a room-to-room party?
As I'm writing from DC, I feel compelled to offer the cheap alternative of the "Election" theme. You can have two booths set up with two different boozes/beers, and people 'vote' by choosing either booth. You can add up red or blue solo cups at the end of your allotted time and announce a President of Alcohol. Make sure there's someone in a black suit with sunglasses that can over-react to any party fouls (a la Secret Service).

I don't know... I'm just... [more]

Ask post: Help me prove my friend wrong
American w/ English degree, fwiw. "already has a great deal of experience" would be correct. You could also use the construct: "x has a great deal of experience already" The reason is that "already" modifies the length of time x has had the experience.

"Has" is a verb form which necessitates an object. "Keith has." is meaningless as a sentence without the object. (provided it isn't the answer to a previous question.... [more]

Ask post: Water pitcher won't fit in our sink
mutrux: fwiw, we installed the "bottle-less" water cooler in our office, and after the initial skepticism (myself included) we use it now just as we did with the 5 Gal bottles. The tubing is very unobtrusive, and while there's s till a part of me that thinks the thing might actually be doing nothing except heat and cool the water, it does taste great. The transportation was one of the main reasons we switched to it.

Ask post: How to write ampersands by hand
Late to the party, but better late than never. I find this curious: I've always made them as fiasco described, starting in the lower right and doing all the loops and ending up just above where I started. But growing up my mum always used the backwards three with a line looking one. She is an RN, and I always assumed it was some kind of professional shorthand. I did mine my way just because that's what it looked like in text and it is easy and fun. Thinking back, she always used to write... [more]

I wish I would have known about all these free/cheap online things a few months ago. I've basically begun my fiscal diet, the same as you're talking about and it is immensely helpful. I created my own spreadsheet in excel for it, which is fine, but some of these dealies look easier. Mine does pretty much everything you're asking about, so if you want a template just send me a me-mail, I'd be happy to send one along. The good? Free and Excel. The bad? 2ยข... Personally, I feel naked if I leave the house without a belt. Maybe I am getting square in my old age, but at some point in high school I noticed that even khakis without a belt looked weird. I am, of course, speaking ONLY to men's fashion here. Let's hope the current trend of girls wearing their belts just below the bust for no reason whatsoever is a short-lived one and in five years ridiculed as leggings and pegged pants are today.... Ask post: how do I perform a marriage
I don't know if anyone is still checking this thread at all, but are there any other resources available online? I'll be performing a wedding at the end of the month myself (first one!) and I'm ordained with the ULC. The legal stuff I can handle, but it's the ceremony itself I'm most worried about. Ask post: Alternative Air Freshener for My Car?
I know it's chemical-ly, but if you want to kill odors for good, nothing works like Ozium. Ozium will KILL the odors, if it is a pressing concern and I'd use any combination of things people have said here... I'm partial to neutral/no smells if possible. If you have the time, nothing will work like airing it out for good, but coffee, charcoal, baking soda... these things will help speed things along.

I had a religious crisis when I was much much younger... somewhere around fourth grade or thereabouts. Anyways, what I got out of that experience is that almost without exception, all religions are basically saying the same thing: 1) recognize something greater than... [more]

Ask post: Why does Disney hate your mom?
The opposite is true: Why are action heroes usually single men and not dads? The idea here is that you cant go on some adventure when you have parents watching you or when you have responsibilities at home.

I would like to point out for the record, here, that within the action genre (which I know much more intimately than Disney) that is sometimes true, and many times not. As for the point about the dead mother, stepmothers, etc... [more]

I'll be the first to admit that the standard mist/stream spray bottle that you can get 85 for $1 from the dollar store works totally fine, and it's what all my friends who have cats have used to great effect.

However, as I am a guy I would be remiss if I didn't at least link to this DIY project for the ULTIMATE BAD KITTY get-off-the-table water squirter. Yes, it might be a bit of overkill, but that doesn't detract from the awesomeness. And if you do use it, I want... [more]

Winter - Tori Amos. Or if you just wanted nothing but Piano, try Leather by Tori. This Woman's Work by Kate Bush is also in the same area you're looking for. If you can find a good piano version of Hungarian Rhapsody by Franz Liszt, I think you'd dig it. That's classical, but it was found in Looney Tunes, so... y'know, it's OK.

Ask post: South Beach Phase 1, help me eat better?
As a former South-beacher, I don't really have any recipes... I looked at the whole process as more "following rules" than eating different food, but I do wish you best of luck. I did very well on phase I, but couldn't handle phase two. Because as soon as discretion was introduced I started saying things like "maybe 7-11's taquitos would be a good carb to introduce". Yeah, I know. That was my bad. But in phase 1, I dropped close to 20lbs.

I was/am a huge NoEx fan, and I purchased the first three seasons before I found out that they were leaving music out. Since I found that out, I have decided to wait until they "fix" the dvds before I buy any more.
