Ask post: Help me finish my degree
Sorry to be pedantic, but UMUC is *not* the University of Maryland. It is in the UM system, but they are two different schools. It is an open enrollement college that was designed as a continuing education program for veterans of WWII.

Ask post: reign or rein
Okay, no results in the OED for the following: "hold reign over" or "hold rein over" or "reign over" or "rein over"

Pertinent definitions to what you are asking:
Reign

b. transf. Influence, dominion, sway, of something immaterial. {dag}in reign, dominant.

Ask post: Flats and sharps in music theory
Okay. A major scale is made up of the following steps between the notes:

whole whole half whole whole whole half

So in F major this is: F (whole) G (whole) A (half) Bb (whole) C (whole) D (whole) E (half) F

This explains the sharps in D major as well: D (whole) E (whole) F# (half) G (whole) A (whole) B (whole) C# (half) D.

By "steps" I refer to either a major or a minor 2nd interval... [more]

Back in this outstanding recipe thread, LoriFLA posted this link to Lemon Chicken with Crutons. I have made this chicken, and it is OMG delicious. I used old wheat bagels for the crutons, and I've been meaning to try it with baguette.

Ask post: As a cigarette should
Nah, VA is out of the way, and it always takes forever to go there just for cheap smokes, i.e. you make up the difference in gas.

I should mention that MD is currently $6/pack. I'm looking for cheaper than that.

I suppose I want to know how much people are paying for cigarettes in the states I'm traveling through. Right now my chart says:

MD $6
NY $7

Ask post: Squirtle? Bulbasaur.
My friend Dayv, in whom I trust to answer this question best, has this to say:Bulbasaur (the one in the cartoon, that is), is kind of a tough guy. He doesn't like showing his soft side.

He's really close friends with Squirtle, but his instinct is to act like Squirtle leaving is not a big deal or to give Squirtle a hard time for leaving.

But then he gives in and bids Squirtle farewell as Squirtle goes off to join a racially segregated Squirtle... [more]

Ask post: an offer I can't refuse
Do it! Powerful people tend to have very good people skills to promote themselves. I don't think this guy would have even offered if he didn't mean it. I have a friend who is always doing this kind of thing, and he owns a car dealership. He loves it when people take him up on stuff like this.

Google groups! Alt.sex.stories! Or their website assm.asstr.org. Donate if you like them. I remember finding alt.sex.stories.d and just being stunned at the amount of care and thought goes into literary choices such as the use of the phrase "cream my jeans" and its connotations for men and women.

Ask post: Group lodging in D.C. area in June
Hello, this is a local answering.

There is Cherry Hill Park which is about two miles north of the UMCP campus. Cabins and Yurts are $85 a night, and trailers are $140. I've never been there and can't vouch for it, but I have never heard bad things about it. I don't know what your transportation situation is, but I know that there is a UM Shuttle bus that goes to the apartments adjacent to the campground. (The route would be 100-Seven Springs Apartments).... [more]

Ask post: Math is cool, right?
Along similar lines to ND¢ 's hilarious answers...

I have a good friend who just couldn't wrap her head around math in high school. She's really smart, but for whatever reason just couldn't get into Algebra2/Trig etc. She ended up going to St. John's College and was taught math in a "liberal arts way," such going through Euclid's theorems and proving them all over again. Approaching math from a historical perspective, she discovered that she does have an... [more]

I don't know if this helps, but it appears that the car might meet the requirements for temporary registration in MD. I also don't know how much it costs. But he could do it online! A cursory search of that site doesn't show me much, but someone else may have more luck.

Ask post: Bad Grammar pop lyrics
Doo wah diddy diddy dum diddy doo - "I knew we was falling in love"

Ask post: Black Lung Plague. I'm sick of being sick.
I've had bronchitis so bad that my doc has prescribed me an albuterol inhaler and it really helped alleviate symptoms of lungy crap. Caffeine helps open up your lungs, so hot coffee in the mornings will also help with symptoms.

I think you should investigate mold, perhaps buying a home mold testing kit to see what you're dealing with.

Ask post: Music in 3/4 time -- any suggestions?
Most third movements of late 18th and 19th century symphonies are the "Trio" or "Minuet" and are usually in 3/4. Among my favorites:

"Scherzo" (Third movement)from Beethoven's Third Symphony
"Minuet" from Mozart's Eine Kleine Nacht Music

Parts of Scheherezade by Rimsky Korsakov are in 3/4. Most of the piece is in 3/4 and 6/8. I bet you would really like that.

Ask post: Should I celebrate a child's menstruation? How?
It depends on the kid. I got nothing which was fine for me at the time, but was distinctly jealous that my cousin received a dozen roses. When I reflected on it, though, I realized I probably would have been mortified if my parents gave me roses to mark the event, but that may have been embarassment that my dad and little brother might have KNOWN. Heh, my dad the grocery shopping, and I would get my mom to ask him to buy pads for me.

Ask post: Very fine dining recommendations in DC with young kids?
My family had two kids that age (not to mention 7 others who were older) when we all went to Morton's on connecticut ave. I'm not entirely sure of the price, but we had the private room so the kids could be nuts and not disturb the other diners.

The service was fantastic, and the food was delicious.

I keep similar grooming habits, though my hair doesn't come in coarse.

The triple-bladed Venus is nice. I find that the hair rinses out fairly easily under running water. Disposables are crap, and will generally become clogged.

Have you considered waxing? It's not too expensive (at least where I live in MD) and you only do it once every few weeks.

Despite what you say, I think calling her a whore isn't so funny for an office going away party. I'm a funny/raunchy chick, but I wouldn't appreciate people with pics of me saying "LOL I like cock!"

Does she have any catchphrases? Anything she says often particular to her job? I think it would be really funny to have lots of people with balloons that say things like that, and then have one person with a Kierkegaarde quote or something.

Was your house ever broken into apartments and used as a rooming house? I live in a grand old victorian in a neighborhood where a lot of the bigger homes were broken up into smaller living spaces. I would put up a "no solicitations" sign.
