Well, I dig the music, and I've seen weirder things from the Japanese.

MeFi post: Boing Boing Finds 21st Century Trotsky?
TNH was one of the most interesting posters in the RASF hierarchy back when she was active on usenet. As was PNH, actually. But power corrupts, and they are example primus for the superiority of a many-to-many "group of peers" communications forum where nobody has the power to delete or censor anyone else's posts over a one-to-many forum like a blog where all the power rests in one person's hand and they generally run it like a little tinpot dictator.... The comment about violet and blue lighthouses wasn't even disemvowel quality, as it's been removed.

That was me who made the comment. I also commented on the "perils of auto-replace without explanation" post with a comment along the lines of "Auto-deletion without explanation can be perilous as well, especially when Violet Blue references all disappear without warning or a note or explanation" but that wasn't disemvowelled, just disappeared.

Ironically enough, one of the posts mentioning Violet Blue that was unpublished was a post that backhandedly accused Google of censoring search results, including Violet Blue and it bore the headline "Google 'disappears' sex blogs?".

Xeni's response to those complaining about sneaking in the line on unpublishing alla sudden into the site policy:

As for the remarks about the unpublishing, Christ people, Teresa linked to it in the post, we never thought before that we needed to have an explicit policy on when or how an editor might edit or take down or refuse to take down their own work (we operate pretty autonomously here, we don't ask each other for permission or approval). MeFi post: George Carlin Dead at 71
My favorite wasn't even a bit of his stand-up, it was an observation he made:

"There are two ways to think about this existence we have. One of them is that it's Wednesday and it's three fifteen and we're talking here in my home, and at four o'clock I have to leave for another meeting. Now, that's a reality. But there's another reality. We're in the solar system of a second-rate star, three quarters of the way out on a spiral arm of an average galaxy in a thing... [more]

Of course you should spank a child to assert authority. If you break the poppets' spirit while they're young, then it makes them much easier to control as you get older. And they know that it hurts you a lot more than it hurts them.

And children will learn a valuble lesson, like "People that are stronger than you or bigger than you will use physical force for your own good" and "If yo make an authority figure mad, they will hit you".

MeFi post: What is a Munchy Box?
This is food that is meant to be eaten at 2 AM while blind, stinking drunk. The meat, potatoes, flour and grease will sit in your stomach, sop up the excess alcohol and allow you to stagger home. If you are complaining about the aesthetics, flavor or nutrition, and you are sober, you are missing the bloody point.

Three cheers for drunkard food.

"White guilt"! Ooo, good one!

Y'see, if you are white and/or male and you are aware of the historical and systemic racial and/or gender inequities that persist in our culture, and understand that they are problems that our society has not yet fully worked through, this is a handy phrase to have on hand if you want trivialize those problems and pretend that they are not real.

Nevermind that no guilt is actually involved.

My favorite:

“Yes. Sign me up. I’ve been kidding people for years: The hours are better, the wages are just as good — whoever heard of a vice president getting shot at? — and it’s a great opportunity to travel. And actually since time has gone by, the job is robust … So sure. Anybody here would, if they’re going to be honest. The chances are slim to none. But I promise you, I would deliver all three of Delaware’s electoral votes.”

As of now, video games are not considered to be an important part of our cultural history that should be carefully preserved like any other medium. They're just silly, disposable entertainment.

However, if video games were ever to become considered culturally significant, or someday viewed in a different light, classic video games, (some of which are facing original & master copy data degradation, laserdisc rot, &tc) might meet the same fate as silent-era films... [more]

"Will I" - where, during an AIDS support group meeting, they all stand up one by one and ask, "Will I lose my dignity? Will someone care?" - made me cry, as I finally recognized exactly the fears, and the heartache that a friend of one of my uncle that I hadn't known too well had gone through.

The one big probably I had with Rent (play or movie) was Mimi. She always came off as manipulative and self-absorbed.

I am a transplant to TX, and even I'm getting tired of pointing this out. The "unofficial slogan" (Don't Mess With Texas) was an anti-littering campaign, chosen for both the the play on words and rhyme scheme.

MeFi post: Silly People - Games Aren't Just for Kids
Arguing that gaming isn't a grown-up activity like raising a family runs a little contrary to the fact that the current generation of video gamers make gaming a family affair. Last year, the Entertainment Software Association released a study that found that 69 percent of U.S. heads of household play video games regularly, and eight out of 10 gamer parents play video games with their children.

I published an article last year that looked into the phenomenon that children... [more]
