You haven't given us much to work with here. The obvious design that comes to mind has a cartoon of a stout gentleman wearing lederhosen and holding a giant stein of beer, with a great big Blackletter title reading "LONGGERMANNAMEFEST 2008." Like others above, I've only heard the phrase used to refer to expenses paid with one's own money, as opposed to someone else's.

"My boss wouldn't cover my hotel room on that business trip, so I had to pay for it out of pocket."

"If you'll pay for your food out of pocket, I'll reimburse you later."
