Oh, wait, scratch that. #16 is Iceman with powers activated. Sorry, the costume design (or lack thereof) threw me.

Ditto DU. If somebody uploads an episode of "MTV's Crapathon" to YouTube, they've infringed the copyright. If I then watch that episode, I've broken no law. Of course, Viacom would love to change that.

MeFi post: Goodbye, Netflix Profiles?
We Are Keeping Netflix Profiles

Dear [Name],

You spoke, and we listened. We are keeping Profiles. Thank you for all the calls and emails telling us how important Profiles are.

We are sorry for any inconvenience we may have caused. We hope the next time you hear from us we will delight, and not disappoint, you.

All's well that ends well, it seems.

MeFi post: Wow-e: Malthusian Fear Mongering Can Be Annoying
It's weird and sad, but for some reason I didn't enjoy WALL-E very much. I don't know why-- I wanted to love it. I'm a huge fan of Pixar's past work, and my politics are as liberal and green as they come, but the movie just didn't move me. Maybe trying to identify with faceless, voiceless robots hits the limits of my empathy. On the other hand, maybe my suspension of disbelief was broken by trying to figure out where WALL-E and EVE got their personalities and emotions from, because they were... [more]

After seeing the Buy n Large website, I really want a SALL-E, a GAR-E and a WEND-E. Dammit, why do people have to do things like that to me?

Competitive racecar driving makes me sick.

That's not a ha-ha funny postironic comment. I'm serious. It's disgusting. What's next, Competitive Setting Money On Fire? Our excesses in the so-called First World are obscene enough; why does the conspicuous wasting of gasoline get so much air time?

MeFi post: Candy bar cross-section ID quiz
16/20. I guessed correctly on Heath vs. Skor, guessed wrong on 5th Avenue vs. Butterfinger (I don't like those; I hate the way the peanut butter substance sticks in my teeth), and should have stuck to my guns on the Krackel vs. Nestle's Crunch.

Incidentally, my actual consumption of candy bars is quite low.
posted to MetaFilter by Faint of Butt at 8:17 AM on June 28, 2008
What does freezing do to a Skor bar? I can't imagine the texture changing much, since it's already hard toffee. Me, I love a frozen Milky Way (American) or Snickers, but the big surprise is a frozen Charleston Chew. You freeze the wrapped bar, and whack it against the edge of a table as hard as you can. It shatters into delicious little shards, which can then be unwrapped and eaten.

MeFi post: Rock the streets
I echo chrominance. It was Ian's site, and specifically this page, that taught me the invaluable ditty:

Right over left, left over right,
Makes a knot both tidy and tight.

If I had learned that rhyme, oh, maybe twenty-five years ago, my childhood shoe-wearing career would have been much different.

MeFi post: Push the crates off the platform. Hurry!
The crates appear to exist in only two dimensions. By this, I mean that an infinite number of crates can occupy the same space on the board. You can shove them all to one side and then push the whole collection off at once for big points. I suspect this is not how the game is meant to be played.

MeFi post: Keeping it in "The Family"...
I recall listening to Diane Rehm interview Fred Rogers once upon a time. At one point she interrupted him and politely asked if he would mind being patient for a moment while they went to station identification. He agreed, of course, but that request has stuck with me, because asking Mister Rogers if he would mind being patient is tantamount to asking the ocean if it would mind being wet for a change.

MeFi post: Gore Vidal on The New York Times Magazine
We know that John McCain spent five and a half years in the custody of the North Vietnamese, but do we really know exactly how his time was spent while there? It's obvious from the public record that he returned a changed man, promptly abandoning his devoted wife after her injury and disfigurement in an automobile accident, and marrying a much wealthier woman whose family fortune allowed him to jump-start his political career. Now, it goes without saying that I would never insinuate that a hero... [more]

After reading that, I knew I would be unable to concentrate on the rest of the thread unless I looked up whether or not a group of kangaroos is, in fact, called a herd. As it turns out, a group of kangaroos is a troop. You may resume the conversation now.

This is food that is meant to be eaten at 2 AM while blind, stinking drunk. The meat, potatoes, flour and grease will sit in your stomach, sop up the excess alcohol and allow you to stagger home. If you are complaining about the aesthetics, flavor or nutrition, and you are sober, you are missing the bloody point.

Three cheers for drunkard food.

Point 1: If the artistic statement of a piece of static, visual art lies in its creation rather than its final form, is it still visual art? Has it become performance art, or the remnants of an act of performance art? Or is it something else entirely?

Point 2: Anyone who refers to their own art as "a staggering work of genius" needs to be beaten soundly about the head and shoulders.

it would have the effect of making the acid produced by mouth bacteria metabolizing the sugar of sweet things taste even sweeter than the original sugar, and that would cause subsequent bites of sweet things taste even sweeter than the first bites instead of falling off in flavor as they now do. It might also serve to drastically reduce the sour aftertaste of sweet things.
