I've got an upconverting DVD player hooked up to an HDTV via an HDMI cable. I can't get the closed captions to display at all, and I know I'm not the
only person to
have this
problem. Any suggestions?

When snow threatened the Cleveland Indians 2007 opening game, the stadium grounds crew was there to save the day. Watch them battle the forces of nature in this
time-lapse video. Think you can handle this monumental task yourself?
Play the game and find out.

Emilio Gonzalez, Director of the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services, will be
resigning next month. To mark the occasion, the
New York Times prints an
editorial exposing the magnitude of the case backlog that USCIS currently faces, and their decided lack of speed in handling said backlog. Gonzalez doesn't like the editorial, so he
blogs about it. And that's when the
comments start rolling in.

"Breakfast is the most important meal of the day." "Breakfast improves your metabolism." "Breakfast makes you work, think and feel better." Okay, fine, you've convinced me to eat breakfast. But what time, smart guy? If I wake up at 6:00 AM and eat my first meal at 2:00 PM, that's still technically breakfast, but I'm pretty sure that's not what people are talking about. So, for optimal health benefits, how long after waking up should I eat?

Handbags of Horror
High-fashion handbags: They're expensive and ugly. So ugly, in fact, that they could only have been inspired by monsters from horror movies. Radar compares and contrasts.

The bad news is that you're controlling a lone, unarmed tank against countless enemies, and your fuel is limited. The good news is that you're completely indestructible, and can destroy the bad guys by hurling your own tank into them.

You post a comment, but it contains an HTML error because you're dumb, so you hit the
[!] and flag your own comment with "HTML/display error." A few minutes later, a helpful mod comes along and fixes your dumb mistake, and all is right with the world... except that you still see
[Flagged] sitting right there below your comment, forever, reminding you of your typographical failings and offending your sense of aesthetics. Please, oh please, can the
[Flagged] flag be taken away by the same moderator who cleans up your HTML? I promise I won't ask for anything ever again
until I find something new to whine about!

A few months ago, I saw
Paul and Storm in concert, opening for Jonathan Coulton. They sang a song about a pirate captain who brings his whole crew home, and his wife's dismay at discovering-- you guessed it--
seamen all over the house. The song isn't on either of their albums, and there's no mention of it on their site, so I don't even know if it's originally theirs or a cover. Google reveals message board posts from people who have heard them sing it, but nothing more conclusive. Please help me track down this song!

I want to publish a fiction anthology, and pay contributors for accepted submissions. Is it unutterably shady and horrible to ask prospective contributors to send a token fee (perhaps $1) with their submissions to defray costs?

The All-New MicroHorror.com
I announced MicroHorror.com months and months ago, when it first launched, but it's been growing enormously since then, and now I've just finished a grueling redesign. Come read over 150 short-short horror stories, each no longer than 666 words! We're always accepting new submissions for the archive.

I'd like to change
MicroHorror.com over from its current primitive HTML-based form to a sleek new database, in order to make it easier for me to update and maintain. Unfortunately, I am sorely lacking in the requisite programming skills, and require assistance.
All I really need is the database. I don't mind doing the grunt work of transferring all 150+ stories to the new format. I just need someone to show me how.
Please note that this is a hobby site and makes no money. I can pay a little, and I'll be glad to discuss the amount with you, but I just can't afford professional rates. Maybe you're an amateur working your way through
PHP for Dummies, or maybe you need a few sites in your portfolio before setting out into the real world. You're the kind of person I'm looking for.
Help a guy out?

Stupid question time: Is there a way to see old sidebar entries? I apologize if this has been asked before, but I searched Yahoo! and checked the FAQ and the wiki, and found nothing. Specifically, I'm looking for a sidebarred AskMe post about gift suggestions for a strange and quirky family. Thanks!

I love the new tab feature, but there's a small bug with AskMe. When the posts are sorted by favorites, anonymous questions are credited to
Anonymous Ask MetaFilter instead of the usual
anonymous. No crisis, but an inconsistency that may distress some of our more sensitive members (you know who you are).

I need a translation into Latin here. The phrase is: "In books, there is truth, and in truth, there are monsters." I'd like it to be as short and concise as possible, perhaps something like "In books, truth, and in truth, monsters." I'm working on a rather odd story right now, so I may have some more strange questions in the coming weeks. Thanks.

This AskMe question wasn't good enough for MetaFilter, but it seems to have amused the folks over at

MicroHorror: Short Stories. Endless Nightmares.
I've just launched MicroHorror.com, because the world needs a free, online repository for short-short horror fiction. Every story in the MicroHorror archive is 666 words or shorter, so it's perfect for casual browsing. Of course, I only have a handful of stories to begin with, but I'm actively looking for submissions. I want to see the collection grow. Is there any MicroHorror in you?

Thanks to a derail in
this thread, I have learned that Merriam-Webster now believes that
"literally" also means "virtually." This has shaken me to the core, and seems to be evidence of the English language being irrevocably broken. I beg you to ease my soul and prove this isn't true by giving me evidence of other English words that, over time, have come to mean their own antonyms.
