It's the New Madrid Fault!
I slept through it. My students noticed the floor shaking during the aftershock this morning. They got all excited and it took them forever to calm down.

Tokyo mefites to meet for a drink
Hi all
I have heard two votes for Sunday, so I will go ahead and suggest that. Bhutanese sounds good and different (GoingToShopping - I love belgian beer but can get it anytime at the Hopleaf bar in Chicago where I live). So let us go there (where is the apostrophe on this keyboard?)
Whatzit, please provide instructions for finding the restaurant. Also, a time - 6:30?
Gratishades, we could also meet up with you later this month -... [more]

Hi all,
sorry I have been away from the internet for a couple days.
I actually meant this Sunday which I realize contradicts what I said about travelling but it turns out we are not going to kyoto til Tuesday.
I can do this Sunday, or Saturday the 29th, but actually not the 30th because we are staying farther away from the city.
(as an aside, I am delighted this is turning into a real party).... [more]

Okay, nobody can come today. We will do it next Saturday the 29th. Sorry for all the confusion.

I guess it is obvious that I will be there, but I should also specify I am bringing a second person.

Hi again all,
I have been invited to a blossom-viewing party (tis the season) and in lieu of a restaurant I would like to invite you all to come.
It is in Shiba Park, near Tokyo tower. Get there via the Tokyo station - we are meeting at the station at 5:00 pm (that is 17:00 on the 24 hour clock).
For those of you arriving later, come to the park, where we will have a tent and chairs. I will hang a large metafilter sign. We will... [more]

Argh! I meant to say that we are meeting at Akabanebashi station(number E 21).
Akabenebashi station, 5:00
Or, if you are later, Shiba park, look for the tent with the mefi sign.

For the non-Tokyoites, E21 is on the Oedo line, which is pink on my map, two stops east of Roppongi.

Request for an interesting statistic about MeFi make up
I find it interesting that, if I'm reading this correctly, out of about 62,000 users listed on the front page, only about 8,000 have favorited and been favorited. A much smaller club. I know there are active lurkers who favorite some but don't post much. Are there commenterrs/posters who never favorite anything?

I'd likely be there. If it's a weekend. The 13th is good.

Simple question: How did you discover MetaFilter?...
Gleemax went to college with my ex-boyfriend. I used to look over his shoulder and make fun of him for being an internet nerd. Then I went away to college and forgot all about it for a few years, then started lurking again for awhile until signups reopened.

I think we should stick to this plan, and hopefully gd799 can catch us next time. No matter what, someone will be unable to come. Anyway I'll probably be there and I'm excited to meet you all.

Hi. Never been to a meetup before. Would love to come. I think I prefer the 20th as well. I would also prefer near-north to far-north, although I am sure south-siders are in the minority here.

Hey Chicago ... wanna hang out?...
I would love to come meet mefites for real. I will be away this weekend til the 15th, anytime after that is good. Nearer to us Southsiders makes me happiest (i.e. not the Hopleaf), but I'll try to come regardless.

See jonmc's comment in the nixerman moralizing metatalk thread:
Perhaps we can add a disclaimer to the green's post box advising against moral condemnations of the poster?
So, if someone asks for advice on how to make a pipe bomb or cook meth, we'll all just have to hold our tongue? This is not NerfWorld, nixerman, get a helmet.

Ah. On examining your examples, I see the problem. I think checking google and wikipedia is a good standard. No reason it should devolve into an endless list.

People have been leaving metafilter since it began. Not that I was around for most of them, but every few months there is a thread in which everyone remenisces about users they miss. While I think it's okay to constructively criticize changes to the site, this particular stunt feels less productive and more about mourning some fictitious bygone golden era.
If we want metafilter to be good, we have to make it good. So let's all wipe away our tears and go find some good links.

He he. I'm in metatalk. This delights me.
My reasoning was that this link got to the heart of the matter, whereas all the previous news articles had been quite speculative. I understand that we don't want to rehash the same discussion too much, but I thought there was some opportunity to have a more thoughtful discussion now that we know in detail what actually happened.
If others feel otherwise, I understand. It's a fine line.

As much as I love Jessamyn (and I can't think of anyone better to do this job), I too worry that too many deletions will interrupt the flow of conversation here.
When a comment or post is really bad, then hooray for deleting it.
If it is just kind of lame or off-topic in a non-distracting or non-thread-derailing kind of way, then a light touch is best.
And sometimes a thread polices itself, and is all the stronger for... [more]

Oh my.
I am new here. I am about to disagree with Matt. But here goes.
Troutfishing's posts on this issue have been continuously thought-provoking. Obviously he's pushing an opinion, but he's doing so in an informative way. Maybe this would suit a blog better, but I don't think it detracts from Metafilter - I think it adds a lot (for me) that I know that if there is an important issue that is getting neglected in the news, regarding ANY...
