Ask post: Unique hotels in small to medium cities?
When I went on business to LA, we stayed at the Georgian in Santa Monica and it was really awesome. Food was never bad, service was great and the rooms were interesting. You could get to the beach by crossing the road, it was right around the corner from all kinds of stuff to do.

Ask post: Is my friend allergic to... food?
What kind of test for gluten did you have? My friend has atypical celiac disease and she did not respond to the skin test, but DID show up as having the allergy on the blood test. From what I understand, with adults the blood test is much more accurate.

Wow, did I hit myself on the head and then write this?

It's a hard question. I definitely know where you are coming from, and I'm so, so there. Things I've done for myself so far are as follows -

1) Treadmill. Unlike ikkyu2, the treadmill is a place where I can go in the morning and jog safely while zoning out. I rock it out to music that if it wasn't listed on Last.FM I would not admit to liking. Other advantages - I don't have to go anywhere,... [more]

Ask post: Atlanta nightlife for a new resident?
Are you in the ATL proper or are you somewhere else? It kind of matters b/c of traffic (if you haven't noticed already, hah). Bob hit a lot of the high points but there are things outside of VaHi/Little 5/Poncey-Highlands, just depends on what you are into, and where you are.

Let's see, you can go dancing at Compound or any number of other places (not my specialty here, alas). I would also check out Yelp for restaurant reviews - especially for places along Buford... [more]

Ask post: Controlling Birth Control: Can I?
I've taken lots of BC over the years and I have no idea what you are asking.

Your typical pill pack starts on a Sunday. You go thru the pills with the hormones and then the fourth week are the placebo pills. That is when you are going to get your period. It may start on Sunday, it may start on Monday or Tuesday, it's your body and it's going to do whatever is usual for it. For me anyway, my period was always lighter on the pill, lasting maybe four days. By the time I... [more]

Ask post: My clothes are boring.
Not sure where you live, but the two best-answers you have marked above are what I would think of as good advice. As far as practicality and where to go - I am not sure where you are, geographically, but check out a Macy's or similar - we find great stuff for my husband on the sale racks there. Perry Ellis and Marc Ecko are good standbys. Some of the Marc Ecko stuff is weird, but there are edgy looking buttondowns that you can wear with nice jeans that don't look so "minivan." My... [more]

Ask post: Recommend easy-to-use software for elderly people
AVG Free is basically pain-free as well as *actually* free. My husband has his parents set up on it, and I think they called us once about it when you recently had to download a whole new client (we've used it for years and I think this is the only time it's happened). He was able to talk them thru it no big deal and it still works fine.

Ask post: How to reward from afar
I sent my Costa Rican developers Guitar Hero II after they did a great job for me on a project. We have a long-standing relationship with these guys and we know they play StarCraft and other games in the office during down time (or, after hours, since they are all friends). If you dont have a personal relationship w/ them, it might make more sense to do something more like electronslave says. Our guys loved their Guitar Hero though.

South Beach stage one for two or three weeks will pull off 10 lbs if you stick to it. Awesome for finding out you are too fat for your event dress when you have a wedding coming up! Other than that, Weight Watchers, and exercise.

Ask post: Where does my baby get her red hair?
My mom was a redhead, my dad's hair is black - but it was blond until he came back from Vietnam, and then it grew in "Indian black" as the family says. Red hair crops up in my family pretty much every other generation - so if I were to have kids, it would be likely for them to have red hair, also because my husband was redheaded as a child, but now has black hair.

FWIW I am the only person in my entire extended family to remain blonde over my lifetime. I am 29... [more]

Last time I had a bad burn I did the cool showers+ibuprofen thing, but also MOISTURIZE. Cetaphil, Aveeno, or a good cocoa butter lotion. Topical lidocaine is your friend and will make the pain less for a while - they make neosporin+pain or generic neosporin+pain.

Ask post: How do I enjoy sex in my twenties without prejudicing my future partners?
You don't have to disclose the entirety of your sexual experience. You're a guy, so frankly, it's less of a problem for you than it is for a girl, but basically enumeration of each and every sexual partner you have had is not important. Your STI status is, though, so you need to know that and be prepared to disclose.

Also, decatheting's friend seems to be on the same wavelength as I am. No need to go through all that with people.

Ask post: Help me spoil my cat!
If she responds to your voice, then you can talk to her. Our cats know "happy human" and "Gee I shouldn't have done that human" very well, and you can tell a huge difference when you are saying, "Good kitty, come see mommy," (even if they don't come) and "WHAT ARE YOU DOING?" (stern, quit-it voice). Tuna is a good treat, as suggested - the kitten probably doesn't need any, and it's supposed to be the other cat's treat, so if you can be in a room with her... [more]

A couple people, mostly the guys, carry knives and sometimes guns to everyday places, such as malls and parks.

No one I know with a CCW permit would carry into a crowded public place where it was totally and utterly illegal to have the weapon. Additionally, if they know someone is not comfortable with the gun, they don't bring it. I'm one of those people, and I have utmost confidence that my CCW friends are not carrying around me. Ask post: Getting a children's book published
My friend just quit a small children's book publisher three months ago; I'm pasting her response to your question in below:

I worked for an independent children’s book publishing company as of 3 months ago, specifically reading the slush pile, so I have quite a bit of experience with this.

From my friend again:

Your agent is not your editor, and so it probably does cost something to have that person read your manuscript. The fact that she does not name the person she represents is kind of fishy. It would be better in the end to join one of the groups named above and get feedback that way, rather than paying someone read the manuscript.

Ask post: How can I quickly design and print event tickets for my theatre group?
Yay theater! I run one of these, too. For my two cents - if you print up individualized tickets, you will want them to be on cardstock ($) because it's less floppy. Then, you will have to cut them out - unless you buy some kind of perforated paper (also $) or have them printed at the copy shop and have them cut the tickets. None of that sounds ideal to me. However, if I were doing it - I would design one ticket in photo shop or I guess even in word or paint or something (I've been at it w/ photo... [more]

If you've ever watched project runway, you've seen them go to Mood. Every large city has a place like that - it's a matter of finding the place. In Atlanta, it's this place called Gail K on Cheshire Bridge Road (I can't tell where you live from your profile, just throwing that out there). Ask post: Should I get cats considering my/their living conditions?
I understand that it's normal for cats in the UK, even in urban/suburban environments, to let outside. In the US, it's not, and we do not let ours outside at all. Too much threat from traffic or dogs. I know people who would live in similar conditions to those you describe here in the US and not have any problem with keeping one or two cats. If you keep them inside exclusively, then it's even better to have two - neither of them is never alone.

We just went through this process. The purpose of the BOD will vary according to what your purpose is. Our BOD is not really advisory - it's active, the members all have real roles, things that they have to do - but we are very, very small and have a very, very defined mission.

Typically not accessed at home, unless we are sorting. Sometimes when we pack out of the venue it's a little chaotic, so we have to go through everything at home at least once after the show to be sure there are no odds and ends in with the bits.

Ask post: Check Debit Madness
The bank that ran the "wrong" check in this instance will have stamped the back. They are required by law to show that they ran the check - their routing number will be on it, and you can figure it out that way. If I had to guess, and this is just a guess, I would posit that there was a problem running the chase check - bad magnetic ink or whatever - and it had to be hand encoded. I have no memory, no concept, nothing, of what she looked like in that coffin, and that's fine by me, since I DO remember her making fried chicken and beans and cornbread while she was alive, all the crazy stuff she did, everything - I have and remember everything but that awful, not-her person that was in the box at the end. At my college there were study carrels on all floors of the library. You could apply for a carrel and would be assigned one. You could leave your stuff there, and because this was Davidson and we had an honor code, it would be fine (I mean study materials, books, stuff like that, not your iPod).
