Miso Hungry
You can make a nice dip by mashing tofu, ginger, and white miso together.

What would be the best bass guitar forum on the web for someone who is a bit of a novice and not devoted to metal?
This would be it.

I'm going to say that I prefer Basschat to Talkbass. I find it a little friendlier.
I find Basschat a little sleepy, activity-wise, although perfectly pleasant.

I really don't want to take it all with me.
This is not new news, but it used to be that the only post office that shipped overseas at economy rate was at rue de l'Epée de bois in the 5th. Anyway, that's what you want — tarif économie.

Book reviews and when not to care about them
I review books in a large metropolitan newspaper in Sydney. Some books for review are sent to me by my editor, others come direct from the publisher. I don't distinguish, which is to say that if I got a book I liked enough to review I wouldn't care if it was sent by a publicity service, a starving artist or Joe Bloggs's Aunt Mabel. Next time — because there is an aspect of timeliness to these things, it's a newspaper, we need news — scope out some critics who have some interest your subject... [more]

Study Abroad: Nantes/Paris
I spent a year studying in Paris, as there were no realistic provincial options for the programme I wanted to follow. I wouldn't say life in the big smoke was especially easy, but there were a lot of cultural and scholarly compensations for suffering a certain amount of inconvenience and bearing a few expenses. That said, I am sure Nantes would be fine, it's a pretty place and easy to get around — it's very walkable, and I'm sure you could make a ton of friends there, which is difficult in... [more]

Yet another grad school advice question
I'm another idiot with an MA and a PhD (in, uh, French) and I got no substantial job action whatsoever from this (if you discount a few research contracts I picked up along the way). I can't say I regret it, but employment-wise what I am doing now is almost completely unrelated.
I did this because I wanted to and because my temperament is somewhat Micawberish.

Activities for a 15 year old male in Adelaide
Cleland is always popular with overseas types. Pat a koala, feed a roo. Hike/picnic in Belair National Park, Waterfall Gully and Morialta Falls. Head down to Deep Creek conservation park, continue on to Waitpinga for roos at dawn. You can do a 2-hour dolphin-spotting cruise on the Port River for around $3.50. Botanical Gardens are fun. What about a game of Aussie Rules? The SANFL games are pretty cheap.

Mineral Oil - Uses? 'Banned in Europe'?
Bullshit.
Caddis is right. You can also do a nice oil finish on unfinished wooden furniture if you sand vegetable oil into it with fine wet-and-dry paper. Anyone who says the contrary has never done this.

Nthing the above advice. Talk to your departmental head, or, if you have one, the Dean of Students. Do it on Monday, or at least make an appointment to see someone on Monday. Things can be done, but you must act quickly.

How Low Can You Go ?
This bass is gettable for around $600 new. US electronics, too. It's absolutely capable of holding down a pro gig. I have three.
(Yeah, I know it's probably not what you're asking for, but if we are talking PRS SE and the like this is the same ballpark. Rondo pretty much have a lock on the "zomg it's so cheap I can't believe it" thing.)

(Note that we are up to $550 in the first comment of the thread. I didn't say anybody started anything — it's because you won't get past Rondo at their pricepoint that the recommendations of more expensive yet still fairly cheap jobs are about the best we can manage.*
*Happy to be proven wrong.)

Just the three of us
I had a relationship of this type for about five years. When it ended, I lost not only her, but the kid. None of which is to discourage you, I merely relate. Her primary bond is with the child.
Good luck, I hope it works out. There's really no reason it shouldn't if all parties are compatible. The child may well be jealous of you, depending on age. This too can pass.

should you really learn acoustic first or can you / should you buy an electric and just go to town on that?
Doesn't matter in my view. Get the one you want to play — that's a much more powerful motivator than some kind of superego command that "you must do things in the proper order".
I don't play the guitar any more, but I have done 30 years on the bass.

What term describes the brain's processing of foreign language as gibberish?
So if you spend the first year of your life only hearing English, you end up not perceiving, say, aspirated and un-aspirated [p] as different sounds.
My daughter spent the first year of her life hearing Cantonese and probably some Mandarin. You can't now differentiate her spoken English from that of a native speaker, which is the proof that she hears English phonemes and signifying differences in the same way as I (also a native speaker) do. Which... [more]

Obviously she realised we were speaking different languages and had to rewire to a degree; it just seems to me that the age limit of one year is way low. All I am saying is that we now have an absolutely bona fide native speaker of English, which if I am reading your argument correctly should not be the case — there has to be some difference, however infinitesimal, or the theory makes no odds.
Anyway, feel free to enlighten me. All I am saying is that this is my experience.

I am not amazingly convinced by the argument I just put forward, but could somebody show me this child who has miraculously learned the language and its phonic system without instruction or effort? This is a large part of what parenting is about, is it not?

Our data indicate that language-dependent memory traces in the human brain emerge before the age of 12 months. To our knowledge, this is the first definite neurophysiological evidence for the development of brain memory traces for speech sounds in infants. Our results show that by the age of one year, the MMN amplitude increases for native phonemes and decreases for non-native phonemes. Thus, during their cognitive development, the ability of infants to discriminate native speech sounds... [more]

Perhaps I could also mention that I'm a language teacher, and that the hundreds and thousands of hours of instruction in English I have given my child — as would any parent — are a bit different in kind, content, adjustment to level and detail to the type circumstances occasionally permit me to offer older students.
