How much should my friend charge for this artwork?

A friend of mine is a freelance illustrator fresh out of school, and he's been approached by a colleague of a former teacher of his. The teacher is retiring, and the colleague would like to commission a cartoon as a retirement present for the teacher. My friend is a brilliant artist, but lacks professional experience, so he's got little reference for what to quote for the work. Can anyone provide a good frame of reference for quoting this kind of job? Details inside! (I'm asking for my friend, of course, who isn't a MeFite but really should become one.)

Why is my favourite count wrong?

My user profile page shows I have one favourite, yet when I click to see what it is, I see a page that tells me I have no favourites (which is correct, as I don't use that feature). What's the dealio? Anyone else seeing an incorrect count on their profile page?

What Nintendo DS Lite cases are good?

I really want a case for my DS Lite that can hold a few games and doesn't suck in some silly way. It doesn't need to hold the power adapter, as my main concern is portability. Being able to play the DS while inside the case is also not something I'm interested in at all. It doesn't even have to be a "real" case built for the DS—it could just be something that works well for the job. Do any MeFites have a case for your DS Lite that you're particularly fond of?

Jesus Rode a T-Rex

"Imagine, if you will, a load of horseshit." John Scalzi with everything you need to know about the $27 million Creation Museum.
"In the first room of the Creation Museum tour there’s a display of two paleontologists unearthing a raptor skeleton. One of them, a rather avuncular fellow, explains that he and the other paleontologist are both doing the same work, but that they start off from different premises: He starts off from the Bible and the other fellow (who does not get to comment, naturally) starts off from “man’s reason,” and really, that’s the only difference between them: “different starting points, same facts,” is the mantra for the first portion of the museum."
Don't forget the photo tour. [previously]

In the mid-nineties, little-known Mac games...

If I Had a Rocket Launcher, I'd Make Somebody Pay In the mid-nineties, little-known Mac games company Bungie Software (now Bungie Studios) was knee-deep in the Marathon universe. Way before Halo was an idea, Jason Jones, Greg Kirkpatrick, and crew were busy constructing an intricate universe of rampant artificial intelligences, lost alien homeworlds, and exploding civilians.

More than a decade after the end of the famed trilogy, Marathon: Durandal has been brought to the Xbox 360. I worked on the project and thought some of the Mac MeFi crowd might be interested, so I rounded up some good links. Enjoy:

Freeverse, Inc's Marathon: Durandal page - includes video
Bruce Morrison and I answer some of the questions posed by the community about the new release
Huge archive of screenshots at halo.bungie.org
Mark Levin fields questions from the long-term community (asking things here will probably get a good response)

What's wrong with the colour picker?

When I use the magnifying glass in the Mac OS X colour picker, I get a colour value darker than what I clicked on. Why?

How do I get colours to match?

Why am I getting different colours when saving images in Photoshop?

Who does awesome guitar repairs in NYC?

I own a 50s reissue Stratocaster that I need to get some work done on. It's been in storage (not in a storage locker but someone's house, and not in a garage) for a couple of years, since I moved away from my hometown. Next month I'll be retrieving it. (Yay!) However, I'm not quite sure where to go in NYC to get that work done properly. I don't want my baby screwed up. Details inside.

Where to find awesome linens at awesome prices?

Just got a new queen bed, and my linens are too small. (Double/full fit.) I need to get some nice, comfy stuff, but really don't want to spend $150+. Do you guys know of (legit) out-of-the-way sites on the Webinet that sell nice sheets for awesome prices?

Last week, I finished a small project at work...

Think Last week, I finished a small project at work called Think. I thought the Mac OS X MeFi crowd would dig it. Imagine if WriteRoom were available for other applications. Y'know, block out the Desktop and other apps, focus your attention, GTD. Sure, it's been done before, but I wasn't really happy with how it had been done before. Upon seeing a Mac OS X Hints thread where someone wanted an app like this, but seeing how meh the available options were, I decided to write one that felt "good". The manual's got a lot of tips and outlines the general workflow. So far, response has been either:
- "I don't get it."
- "Go back to Windows you n00b."
- "Holy shit. I can bring other stuff forward for a second and then throw it right back away. Holy shit, and there're keystrokes for it."
Of course, I prefer that last one there. It's free, so have a download and give it a spin.

I saw a neat shirt on Mythbusters. Where can I get it?

Earlier tonight, during the Mythbusters marathon, I saw various 'Busters wearing a "WARNING: SCIENCE IN PROGRESS" shirt. It had a sign with an explosion and a guy fleeing the blast. I've searched around, but have not been able to find it. Anyone know where they got 'em?

Where are the best vegan snacks in NYC?

I'm in NYC, my friend's several states away. I'm sending her a package and want to include some vegan snacks. What might I find in the city that is tasty and will travel well?

Worth a thousand.

Does something in this picture look a little . . . off? At first glance, it's just a picture of smoke from damaged buildings from the conflict in the Mideast. At second glance, it's a fine example of how not to embellish news photos.

Eastern Movement

From the same record as "First Steps into Metropolis". More downtempo than pure cinema this time, but I seem unable to shake the latter.

First Steps into Metropolis

The opening song on a soundtrack to a movie that doesn't exist. I've only had the balls to show my friends so far, so I figured I'd let you guys listen. Please don't be too brutal. (Unlike my first HiFi post, this isn't a sampling experiment.)

sinxitweten

This is an experiment in audio loss. The idea: If you destroy audio with low-bitrate encoding, how far do you have to go before it no longer sounds like a badly encoded song, but something intriguing again? [more info]

Securing capital for a software project?

A colleague and I want to raise money for a project our company currently can't take on. How to get this ball rolling?

Vaffledagen!

Today is International Waffle Day. All around the globe, people are lining up at their favourite waffle establishments, waiting for that wonderful grid-laden batter construct we all love. Catholics refer to March 25th as the "Feast of the Annunciation", but we all know that's really code for "Feast of Countless Tasty Waffles".

Advice for living in NYC?

I just got a new job in Manhattan, and while I've visited several times, I understand I don't have a great grasp on what it's like to live there. Yet. (And of course, may end up living in another borough after a certain period of time.) Can you NYC MeFites give a Virginian some assimilation advice?

Because all Arabs are terrorists, right?

Ann Coulter Runs Her Mouth, Universal Press Syndicate Shoves an Eraser in It - It would appear that Ann Coulter's love of all people non-white reared its blonde, anorexic head again in her February 23rd column, with a racial remark about columnist Helen Thomas. However, because of some editing on Universal Press Syndicate's part, you wouldn't know it. Maybe Annie's just upset that Ms Thomas isn't a fan of her boy Dubya.

Too Low to Find My Way, Too High to Wonder Why

Pam Bricker Passes - Just as Thievery Corporation's The Cosmic Game hits shelves, it's announced that acclaimed jazz vocalist Pam Bricker, long-time Thievery conspirator--and probably the best guest vocalist the D.C. duo has ever had--has passed. Chung's blog post mentions, "it was most likely suicide." Are there any MeFi'ers out there who can provide more information? Confirm? Disconfirm?
