Mystery on 5th Avenue
Yeah, iconomy, I came up with the same and kept checking and rechecking to make sure I'd transcribed it properly. I've got to believe that those "errors" are meaningful in some way, as Who_Am_I suggests, because it just doesn't seem like the kind of thing that designer would allow to stand otherwise.

Death of a Banana
Did anyone think to store samples of that other banana before they went extinct? I'd imagine with modern cloning we'd be able to get it back.
I believe I've read/heard that there are still some Gros Michel bananas out there in people's back yards and whatnot. It's not that it's completely extinct, but rather that the plantations all became infected and so switched to the Cavendish. The Gros Michel is commercially extinct. And yes, there are banana... 65%, but I coulda done better if I'd cared to repeat the clips. I'm afraid I just picked at random if I didn't immediately intuit an answer. I agree that this is nothing to do with synesthesia, because the sounds had a totally different shape and color for me than the symbology he was using. (not a synesthete)

what could be simpler?

GoodNewsFilter I think you mean. Though honestly, how long will it realistically be before marriage becomes an equal-opportunity institution nationwide? I'm optimistic, but all those damned state-level bans do depress.

You left out the "MeFi's own" part.
I rather assume that deep inside The Music Industry, this kind of analysis has been run for decades, secretly generating the formulas that fuel a neverending quest for the Perfect Pop Song. I'm excited for some freaky truths to be revealed.

The thing about cosmetic surgery is that there's nothing inherently wrong with it. It's a logical extension of hair dye and hair cuts and dressing nicely and whatnot. —dirtynumbangelboy
Yes, but we've really gotten quite good at dyeing hair. A decent colorist using quality chemicals can make it appear as though you were born with those awesome highlights, haven't developed a touch of gray, or really are a natural blonde.... [more]

I promise, I'm not hating. My point, which ericb exemplifies nicely, is that for those of us who haven't had work done, media images of plastic surgery disasters tend to dominate our perception of it. Partly because of the schadenfreude, but also because there are very few... [more]

Pepper Soup is delicious, if you have an African grocery to source the spices from. I like using a melange of peppers in it -- 1 each of habanero, ancho, poblano, jalapeno, serrano -- to create a broad, fruity, spiciness. I would recommend against getting a bag of frozen goat bits, however, as it tends to be horribly boney. It won't be quite the same flavor, but if you use beef stew... [more]

Is Clark really that significant a player? I mean, I liked him last time out and all, but would he really be able to sway delegates to Obama? It fit nicely in the West Wing style, but honestly I've paid no attention to Gen. Clarke since '04. Has anyone else? Does Arkansas love him more, as a native son, than the Clintons?

Grapes to Wine
If you don't have enough grapes to make an oenological impact this year—or don't feel like making a foxy, North American grape wine—I can heartily recommend the baking of a Concord Grape Pie or two. Sounds a bit crazy if you're not from Napes, NY, I know, but they're delicious. I made one last Thanksgiving with the last of the season's grapes and it really exceeded everyone's expectations. Skinning them was a bit of unexpected work, but lest you think otherwise, it was both important and worth... [more]

Another off-topic recipe for grapes you're not making into wine, from Mark Bittman's blog: salsiccia all’uva — sausages and grapes. That was dinner on Friday it was unexpectedly delicious if I do say so myself. I don't know where else I'd employ the bed of sauteed grapes in my cookery, but even if only in this one dish, yum!

No, insanely, Quorn™ contains egg (and a competitor, Veat™ contains whey, I believe). It baffles me that companies don't go just that much further, to find a binding agent or whatever that would make the product acceptably vegan. I mean, really, why limit your market when you're 95% of the way there?

Custom Spirits
Remind me again, why are state run liquor stores a blight upon Washington?
They're also a blight upon Oregon. The OLCC decides what liquor's gonna be sold, imports it, warehouses it, and distributes it to (the relatively few) liquor stores across the land. It's a blight because it dampens market forces and leads to a certain boring sameness in the spirits which are available to Oregonians.
Say I have a hankerin' for... [more]

Big dot. I think I enjoyed his early stuff the most. The City and the Stars, or maybe The Deep Range. I wouldn't recommend his last decade of works, "co-written" with Stephen Baxter. I gather it was Clarke with the big ideas and Baxter doing the actual writing... neither of them seemed to benefit artistically from the other, though I'm sure it pays the bills.
