MeTa post: not maine, oregon, let's meet in portland
I'm a solid maybe. Most of Saturday I think I'm at an extended not-quite-in-law BBQ (my girlfriend's brother's fiancée's sister and nephew are visiting from Quebec), but that evening may be free, and I think Friday's wide open. So, I'll be watching this space for updates and will show if I'm able. One doesn't want to miss the opportunity to meet the amazing jessamyn, and potentially The Founder, along with any Stumptown MeFites who didn't make the last meetup. And yeah, introversion thy name is... [more]

I'll be there if I can. BBQ thingy begins at 4, so, you know, it's just a question of how soon one can light out with propriety.

I dare say this is a weak showing for Portland. Summer wreaks havoc on availability, I guess.

MeTa post: A question and answer area for people to talk about writing/recording music
I like the idea, and agree that off-site stuff seems to die on the vine, but I don't make music so shut my mouth.

I don't see why music-related questions couldn't exist in both subdomains, if what you're talking about is strictly AskMeMusic, and not a broader music-centric discussion space. Podcasts do that weird cross-subsite tango between podcast.metafilter.com and metatalk posts. And what's the plan for AskMe's travel and transportation category of questions once... [more]

MeTa post: It's an AskMe Miracle
Now we know, and the other credit-card-ignorant will know too when they search!

I suggest that you take this opportunity to add some credit-card, AMEX, extended warranty, etc.-related tags to the question, to help the credit-card-ignorant find it, in case their issue isn't a logic board but something else, or if they're coming at it from the opposite direction. Ensure that your most-helpful answer of the year has the potential to help the most other... [more]

MeTa post: Can we get a policy regarding the ads on Metafilter?
I'm really curious about the size of MeFi's... well, audience, for lack of a better word.

On a randomly sampled Tuesday this March, mathowie said that daily unique visitors was just shy of a quarter million. There are only something like 10K active accounts, if I recall, and certainly nowhere near all of us are hitting the site daily, so figure that every day maybe 248,000 non-members read something on the site? I'm just guessing, but I assume that... [more]

MeTa post: Related Questions should appear in preview
I've been meaning to ask for this as well. Of course, if I understand how relatedness is arrived at, it would require that you write your question first and then find out that it has already been asked and answered. That doesn't mean that showing related on-preview shouldn't happen, but by the time someone's invested their time in a well-composed question they may be inclined to go full-speed ahead regardless.

Also, having just posed a question earlier, I... [more]

MeTa post: PDX Meetup
I'm in. In my world, the Horse Brass fills the hole left by the closure of the R&R, but the Brass really is a stanky smoke pit, ill-suited to general purpose gatherings. Howzabout the Green Dragon at 9th and Belmont? They rotate through an excellent selection of taps there. I've never sat on the bar side, but it looks like it'd accommodate a decent sized crowd of Mefites, should they come out.
posted to MetaTalk by mumkin at 10:57 AM on April 26, 2008
I hope you had some of the Dragon's particularly delicious fries, team lowkey. It has those to recommend it as well.

This thread is going to scroll off into oblivion tomorrow, so we should at least pick a tentative date for the meetup. That'll secure some of that all-important sidebar real estate to give the event visibility. May 24 maybe? It's a Saturday, is far enough out to maximize awareness, and is post-primary, so maybe we can have the audacity to hope for a... [more]

Meetup Bootstrap Protocol should definitely involve informing the bar staff. I've read too many failed meetup threads where folks passed in the night because no one told the house what was going on and everybody played it as cool as lesbian sheep. Not that there's much risk of us being covert... at 4 in the afternoon, I reckon the Green Dragon will be fairly sparsely occupied. If it would help, though, I could probably scrounge up some "Hello, My Name Is ________" name tags to amp the... [more]

msalt: the band is The Harvey Girls, and after the PA got sorted out it was a great show. Actually, it was pretty fine beforehand, but in a less intelligible kind of way. It looks like MySpace is your better bet for an updated gig list. I forget who was where, when, but your time at the meetup may not have overlapped with that of melissa may and sleepy pete, the band's founding members.

A great pleasure meeting everyone. What with comings and goings we must have had... [more]

MeTa post: MeFi Projects getting public comments
I was gonna ask where the Projects-specific discussion note was, but then I realized that it's hidden when Live Preview is turned off (as I had done). Is there a reason that the hug/etc. notes are tied to the live preview? I suspect that it'll be particularly useful to be able to point to that note in the near future, as a Projects-specific comment culture evolves. Stop the asshattery before it starts.

MeTa post: Who are the people in your contacts list?
What need is the "show new" parenthetical link at the top of Contacts and Contacted By tabs supposed to serve? I know that jessamyn has crazyloads of contacts, but is it common to have so many that you need to filter it down to the ones added in the last month?

MeTa post: We've got a network - let's use it!
For all that Portland, Ore. is supposed to be a Mefite-heavy techie town, we sure don't see many Jobs listings. (Props to Skwirl for posting his annual AmeriCorps volunteer opportunities.) Of course, we had openings for people where I was last employed and I didn't post them, so mea culpa as well... mathowie, have you ever run internal promotions for the Jobs subsite? MeTa post: Yeah, I got my answer, but fuck you.
Bah. AskMe isn't just a resource for the asker, it's an archive of answers to problems that we all may face at some time. It's like one of those big data sets that people pull together for creating expert systems or teaching AIs (please, expert system/artificial intelligence researchers, don't get all technical on my ass here), and without the identification of the answer that proved the solution, it's less helpful to everyone. Like using helpful meta tags, it's just the Right Thing To Do.... [more]

My parents gave me a last name for a first name. Not just any last name, mind, but a fairly uncommon one, so there's only one of me or earth, as far as I know. If I was a dick to you in fifth grade, you can find me in Google and call me out, sure in the knowledge that I'm the guy you're looking for. Riding your pony. As far as icons go, I'd like for there to be one for FAILED MEETUP, red circle with cross through it style. Presumably there would be no conflict with the pictures icon unless one solitary mefite showed up, took pictures, and Flickred snaps of empty chairs and her own shoutouts.

I don't use last.fm at all or go to the site, but it's sort of nifty (for me) to have the last few songs I've listened to show up here on my profile page

I feel similarly, and wonder if the definition of this feature might be slightly too narrow. Currently the wiki says that "the service must have a profile page that shows a user's activity there," but I'd kinda like to see recent Netflix movies alongside the Last.fm/Twitter/Flickr stuff,... [more]

MeTa post: Feeling crowded?
Sometimes when we get big press, a ton of people sign up but only 1-5% pay for the account

Huh. I just logged out to check the sign-up process, since that seemed like a crazy abandonment rate. I hadn't realized that the $5 isn't actually mentioned on the registration page itself. No wonder so many folks don't make it all the way through the funnel. Not saying it's a bad thing, but what's the thinking about surprising them at the end?
posted to MetaTalk by mumkin at 4:22 PM on April 13, 2008
it would be interesting to see what the breakdown is between ad revenue and sign-up fees

I doubt that's necessary, caddis. Assuming that the rate of completed registration (paid) is a constant 50 users/week, that's $13,000/year. Mathowie is making a full-time job of Metafilter (and PVRBlog, etc.), and a part-time job of it for the rest of the team. I'd say that ad revenue has to be the overwhelming portion of the income. MeTa post: We'll all need lobotomies to keep from shouting "Don't do it!"
Hopefully the asker will find his way here, which is where I'll express my interest in knowing what school of meditation he's pursuing, if any. I was under the impression that much of the virtue in meditation is the self-mastery required to achieve your target-state. Having your brain re-wired to make meditation easier seems to defeat the purpose, no? Are short cuts allowed? And even if they are, it strikes me that this is like prescribing beheading as a cure for a headache.
