What can you (you wonderful, bright, worldly people, you) tell me about legal anthropology? I'd like to know about its ideological construction, presence in academia, personal experiences, applications in the non-academic world, and whatever you've got. Thanks!

I need to get a laptop. Two constraints: I can spend probably no more than 900$ US, although I'm ever so slightly flexible about that, and I'm probably going to end up buying it in Kampala, Uganda.

Considering the recent events in Lebanon, can we perhaps consider a bit of extra judiciousness with postings like
this one,and commenting therein if they stay up? I don't think anyone questions the gravity of the situation there, but most posts dealing with it are basically Newsfilter situations that devolve into extremely impassioned flamewars and insoluble arguments about the validity of a number of Big Issues.

I'm concerned about AskMe, particularly with regard to relationship questions, becoming a forum for members to moralize and reinforce the most conservative expectations of behavior.
Like in this thread, for instance. I don't think it's in anyone's interest, and particularly so if we want a diverse and enlightening dialogue, for threads like this to become a pile-on of abstract moralizing about committed relationships in general.

In America (and in Europe, too, I suppose), we use the Linnaean taxonomic system for living things and have certain specific terms (acetate, polymerase, cholinergic, etc.) that are used in chemistry, for example; how does such terminology work in other languages, especially those very dissimilar to English, such as Chinese?

I like to make stews with rice, lentils, potatoes, and lots of nutritious vegetables (e.g. cabbage, parsley, kale, broccoli, tomatoes, various greens, and so on); it occured to me recently that I might be inadvertently diminishing the benefits of these foods by cooking them for 3-5 hours. Could this be so?

I read once about (didn't actually read it) a short story by a Japanese author in which the protagonist's business cards come to life and impersonate him; I thought it might be Kobo Abe, but couldn't substantiate. Please to assist.

It seems like divx, WMP, and this other program called PowerDVD are all running problematically on my computer, and they all started doing it today. Specifically, they play movie-type files too fast or too slow, they stop suddenly, the audio/visual synchronisation disappears or one disappears, and WMP specifically jumps around from chapter to chapter unpredictably when I try to make it skip forward. What could be causing this?

Ok, so for the past ~4 days, I haven't been able to get any of my hotmail mail. I can see the mail in my inbox, but when I click on the sender's name (which is how you retrieve mail), nothing happens. I tried using different computers, including a nice new mac, and the problem remains. Have any other Mefites had any such problems, or know anything about this, etc.?

physicsfilter: This is moderately involved, so bear with me. Let's say there are two spaceships which are situated on two planets, and the planets are about one light hour away from each other, just for the sake of argument. These ships depart from their planets, both heading for a common point between the planets. The ships both accelerate to an appreciable fraction of the speed of light above half, e.g. 3/4 or 4/5 or something. My question is, couldn't it seem then that one was traveling faster than the speed of light and one standing still? I suspect this can't be so, but I don't know why.

Ok, I apologize in advance for this being a not-entirely-original question, but my girlfriend and I are looking to teach English somewhere in Europe starting this fall (we're thinking mostly of Spain and Italy, but we're open to suggestions), and I was wondering how important certification is, and how to obtain the correct sort of certification from a reputable authority. Thanks, AskMeFi!
