MeFi post: Justice postponed?
Ed Vulliamy (foreign reporter of the year in the 1997 British Press Awards) wrote this article last December on why it was so hard to bring Radovan Karadzic to justice.

Pope Guilty: I would like to know why you think China should be given a free ride here.
Not only are they repressing human rights in Tibet; they are also fuelling the war in Darfur. As the athletes will doubtless be leant on not to upset the apple cart, the politicians can make a symbolic gesture by their absence at the opening ceremony. Isn't that what politicians are supposed to do in the democratic world - reflect the opinions of the people. I think my question to you is better... [more]

Ok then. Maybe these scumbags with their mediaeval beliefs should endure a little mediaeval punishment. How about the pillory to start with. Nothing like a bit of public ridicule and a bit of rotten fruit and veg. This type of mega scam doesn't seem so common in Europe so as you have an election coming up over there maybe you could sort of, you know, hold your politicians to account.

You can argue as much as like about the efficiency of of corn ethanol vs fossil fuel. What is being pointed out in the FPP is that taking land out of production for human foodstuffs and using it for ethanol producing crops is pushing up the price of food for much of the worlds population. What makes this worse is that in many cases the crop in question is the same, just that the end use is different; and this in the case of US corn growers is government subsidized.

US says it won't allow Iran to shut key Gulf oil route
And how will they achieve this. I call bullshit. One tanker fireballs into the sky and the rest will stay at anchor or tied up. No owner will take the risk of moving their ships out of / into the Gulf as they will not then be covered by their insurane. War Risk
posted to MetaFilter by adamvasco at 10:32 AM on June 30, 2008
Just say... the tanker that is hit first (causing all the others to stop moving ) has its registry in one of those third world countries who are not part of the so called strategic alliance. May be the Iranians or the Chinese would pay the flag nation some compensation. How will the the USA then justify attacking Iran? Oh and the Oil has stopped moving. At its narrowist the Strats of Hormuz are only 21 miles wide. The Iranians have already been training to disrupt traffic.... [more]

This is not helping Middle East produce people who contribute to a modern society. Of course if the USA really tried to negotiate a peace settlement with all the players in the middle east then the price of oil would not rise as there would be stability. No permanent solution here as running on empty is still running on empty, but at least a breathing space.

For the naysayers upthread I suggest that what Reprieve is stating is perfectly plausible given Bush's admission of secret prisons in 2006. The warships claim has been running since 2005.
On the record: A US navy spokesman, Commander Jeffrey Gordon, told The Guardian that "there are no detention facilities on US navy ships".
But he said it was a matter of public record that some individuals had been put on ships "for a few

For those of us not thoroughly soaked in US history maybe I should point out that the above quote from [expletive deleted] is taken from Eisenhowers' farewell address.
