The best defense is a good offense

Internet television host Revision3 was the victim of a denial of service attack this weekend. The source of the attack? None other than RIAA and MPAA-funded MediaDefender.

The trials and musical triumphs of Mario

Some people like to make things difficult for Mario, but others like to make it easy (and musical!).

Another step into the metaverse

Building on the ideas of Microsoft's Photosynth, flickr's geotagging, and Google's Panoramio, Viewfinder aims to organize photographs spatially in 3D worlds such as Google Earth. See it in action.

Practice makes perfect

What are some activities that are like 'going to the gym' for your profession?

Water water everywhere, now with more drops to drink

Not content to rest on his laurels after creations like the portable kidney dialysis machine, the IBOT robotic wheelchair, the Segway, and the innovative cyborg replacement limbs, DEKA Research President Dean Kamen demonstrates his new vapor compression distiller on The Colbert Report.

The power to tax is the power to destroy

Does the 'use tax' charged by states for purchases made outside their borders violate the commerce clause?

Some like it, some don't

Massachusetts lawmakers are debating a bill that would ban parents from spanking their children. Meanwhile, Corpun (previously)would like to remind you that it's not just for kids, but hey, we already knew that.

Georgia AG insists the sentence was cruel but totally normal

Georgia's Supreme Court has agreed that Genarlow Wilson's 10-year prison sentence without the possibility of parole and accompanying lifetime sex offender status was cruel and unusual. Previously on MeFi.

A cure for malaise?

I'm looking for more fun than I'm entitled to. Safety, morality, and practicality are not concerns.

Help me take the best portrait Los Angeles has ever seen.

I'm looking for really good locations to shoot portraits in the Los Angeles area.

We know what's best for you.

An excellent example of the consequences of the Supreme Court's Gonzales v. Raich decision: today the United States House of Representatives voted down a bill which would have prohibited the DEA from targeting State-authorized medical marijuana dispensaries. Almost simultaneously, the DEA raided 10 medical marijuana dispensaries in Los Angeles.

Photographer's tour of Beijing?

I'm going to Beijing for a week in October. I would like to take some really great pictures. Where should I go?

*Achoo!* Excuse me, I'm allergic to irony.

"Venezuela and Cuba have both asked that Posada be extradited, but an immigration judge in September 2005 ruled he could not be sent to either country out of concern he might face torture there." Luis Posada is a free man today. A graduate of the notorious School of the Americas, he is wanted for various acts of terrorism in a number of Latin American countries.

Don't hate the playa, hate the game

I'm leaving for Burning Man early next week and would like to get appropriately decked out, but I'm an LA n00b. What are the best costume shops in Los Angeles?

"This website exists to break down the...

"This website exists to break down the barriers between people, to extend a weblog beyond just one person, and to foster discussion among its members."

-or-

"MetaFilter is about posting links to interesting sites."

Which is correct?

Finding interesting sites is a solved problem. I was always under the impression that the former was the more important feature of MeFi.

Blame the farmers

Was agriculture a mistake? Guns, Germs, and Steel author Jared Diamond asks this question. Originally published in 1987, it's still completely relevant today. I personally feel that memes are the real culprit, and they are inevitable in any sizable social group with a common system of communication. Could agriculture be an ancient meme which has profoundly impacted the history of mankind?
