Shit. My colleagues are going to think I'm crazy tomorrow when I keep singing "PIPE WRENCH FIGHT (pipe.wrench.fight)" all day.

I live in the valley on the East side of the Shawangunk (pronounced "shon-gum") ridge. I can see the tower (called "Skytop") from my terrace. If it's hotter here, it's just me.

I did however teach Jonathan Swift's "A Modest Proposal" today (with a great deal of relish) to a bunch of Freshmen, who had never read it before! AWESOME!

How to fill 70 minutes of in-class writing time?
Try bringing in a really short article, and discuss tone, diction, audience, et cetera-- have them rewrite the article for different purposes. Think Queneau's Exercises in Style. Take ideas like "reportage," or "anger," or "cross-examination," and have them rewrite all or part of the passage in that style. It's fun, allows them to flex their writing muscles, and teaches them different registers for different audiences.

Possible causes for pain in left shoulder, arm and hand for about two weeks?
I had a ruptured disc at C4-C5 and very, very similar symptoms, though I couldn't actually raise my left arm at all. The nerve was compressed where it exited the spine, and that's what caused the pain. Not knowing what to do (I didn't know about the nerve yet) I went to an orthopedic surgeon, who had me get a shoulder MRI-- they found a very slightly torn labrum, and ascribed my problem to that and assumed I was exaggerating the pain. I persisted and got an MRI of my neck, and that was the... [more]

Zambrano is right, in that the discs themselves do not cause the pain. The discs pressing on the nerves cause the pain.

Corn and You
It annoys me to see an ingredient list that looks like this: "WATER. HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP. CITRIC ACID. PHOSPHORIC ACID. SUGAR ALCOHOLS (SORBITOL). ASPARTAME" &c.
They already have sugars IN there. Why add aspartame? It reads, to me, like this:
"WATER. CANCER. HIGH CANCERY CANCER SYRUP. LEMON CANCER. MATCHHEAD CANCER. VOLATILE CANCER. (CANCER). ARTIFICIAL CANCER." &c.

GuyZero: of course not. Neither does phosphoric acid. They provide a little bite, is all. But. My underlying point is that ingredient lists are ridiculous. I'm all about better living through chemistryTM, but when there's thirty ingredients in a food item, I tend to try to avoid them. I can deal with methylethylisothiazolinone or whatever in my shampoo (it's not actually in mine) but twenty compounds including two... [more]

Are nipple piercings attractive on straight men?
I have 'em (rings with hematite captive beads), I got them many years ago, I'm 35 but look like I'm in my late twenties, and have met a ton of women who either liked them or were neutral. I got them primarily for me, just like my tattoos. I recently put small diamond studs in my ears, after not having earrings in for a few years.
Just another datapoint.

St. Paul Police say Democracy? No.
I don't think anyone is advocating for free reign to do whatever they want (i.e. splash bleach/urine/ink/whatever, break windows, overturn garbage cans/kiosks/cars/people, but instead simply asking for their right to assemble peacefully and air their grievances. For my own part, having been a peaceful protester, I understand why the police react as they do, but that reaction is akin to swatting a gnat with a buick. When the first (very large) anti-war protest took place in NYC, I was there with... [more]

Teaching Marjane Satrapi's Persepolis in my Composition class in a few days. It was picked as the class-wide summer reading for the entire incoming freshman class.
Graphic novels are accessible but complex, "fun" to read but demand a great deal of mental energy to really understand. Scott McCloud's Understanding Comics is still one of the best resources on this.

Another possibility is that some cultures consider buildings differently; what is the first floor in the U.S. is "RDC," or rez-de-chaussée in France, and the corresponding (U.S.) second floor is actually the "first" floor. So floors labelled "1," "2," etc, might be misleading? I dunno.

Being an English student, I realize every day that I will never manage to read all the books that I want to. I'm particularly interested in poetry, and one summer I was hanging out with friends at a cafe at a state Uni. (not mine). We were drinking coffee and hanging out, and there were a bunch of Greek students that were taking summer classes, and they ended up joining us. The conversation turned to favorite poets, and one of the women asked me whether I liked "Kavafis," and I had no... [more]

My mommy doesn't hate me! Because I'm special! And unique! Because there's never been anyone like me before, ever! Mommy loves Martin because he is real, and when I am real Mommy's going to read to me and tuck me in my bed and sing to me and listen to what I say and she will cuddle with me and tell me every day a hundred times a day that she loves me!
