I live in the valley on the East side of the Shawangunk (pronounced "shon-gum") ridge. I can see the tower (called "Skytop") from my terrace. If it's hotter here, it's just me.

Corn and You
It annoys me to see an ingredient list that looks like this: "WATER. HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP. CITRIC ACID. PHOSPHORIC ACID. SUGAR ALCOHOLS (SORBITOL). ASPARTAME" &c.
They already have sugars IN there. Why add aspartame? It reads, to me, like this:
"WATER. CANCER. HIGH CANCERY CANCER SYRUP. LEMON CANCER. MATCHHEAD CANCER. VOLATILE CANCER. (CANCER). ARTIFICIAL CANCER." &c.

GuyZero: of course not. Neither does phosphoric acid. They provide a little bite, is all. But. My underlying point is that ingredient lists are ridiculous. I'm all about better living through chemistryTM, but when there's thirty ingredients in a food item, I tend to try to avoid them. I can deal with methylethylisothiazolinone or whatever in my shampoo (it's not actually in mine) but twenty compounds including two... [more]

Dearest creature in creation
Studying English pronunciation,

Sounds like corpse, corps, horse and worse
I will keep you, Susy, busy,

Tear in eye your dress you'll tear,
So shall I! Oh, hear my prayer,... [more]

St. Paul Police say Democracy? No.
I don't think anyone is advocating for free reign to do whatever they want (i.e. splash bleach/urine/ink/whatever, break windows, overturn garbage cans/kiosks/cars/people, but instead simply asking for their right to assemble peacefully and air their grievances. For my own part, having been a peaceful protester, I understand why the police react as they do, but that reaction is akin to swatting a gnat with a buick. When the first (very large) anti-war protest took place in NYC, I was there with... [more]

Boy, I sure loved CheeriosTM as a kid. But then one morning I poured a bowlful for myself, added the milk and a teaspoon of sugar, and sat down at the table to eat. I ate almost all of it and then noticed something odd. What the heck is that? pokepoke. poke poke. poke.

WashPost on graphic novels
Teaching Marjane Satrapi's Persepolis in my Composition class in a few days. It was picked as the class-wide summer reading for the entire incoming freshman class.
Graphic novels are accessible but complex, "fun" to read but demand a great deal of mental energy to really understand. Scott McCloud's Understanding Comics is still one of the best resources on this.
Anybody who simply dismisses the... [more]

Being an English student, I realize every day that I will never manage to read all the books that I want to. I'm particularly interested in poetry, and one summer I was hanging out with friends at a cafe at a state Uni. (not mine). We were drinking coffee and hanging out, and there were a bunch of Greek students that were taking summer classes, and they ended up joining us. The conversation turned to favorite poets, and one of the women asked me whether I liked "Kavafis," and I had no... [more]

My mommy doesn't hate me! Because I'm special! And unique! Because there's never been anyone like me before, ever! Mommy loves Martin because he is real, and when I am real Mommy's going to read to me and tuck me in my bed and sing to me and listen to what I say and she will cuddle with me and tell me every day a hundred times a day that she loves me!

Now, Get Off of My Lawn!
I have the privilege of teaching First-year Composition, and I have to agree wholeheartedly with Dizzy's first comment, as well as the rest of them. The kids are alright. They just need a little help, perhaps, to view the world through some other lenses than they've been given. Public (and in some cases private) education is deeply flawed in many ways, and it does not prepare students to think critically about the world and their position in it.
It's... [more]

Ok, listen. Peas SUCK. They're all mealy and pasty inside, and they are one of the Creator's few mistakes, the other one I can think of offhand being bananas (white turds). I don't CARE about your potassium needs, eat a gotdamn kiwi.

How to catch and eat a rat
Wow. The expression "ratly feast" just became my new favorite phrase.
P.S.: invest in a good sturdy full-tang knife, a multitool, and a decent firestarter (magnesium block, flint striker, similar item) and with a little know-how, you're fairly well-off.

Avoiding death by plastic
Turning and turning in the widening gyre
The falcon cannot hear the falconer;
Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
The best lack all conviction, while the worst
Are full of passionate intensity.

I don't need to click the link, I unfortunately already know about this. Sometimes, you hear or read about things that absolutely pull the breath right out of your chest, make you feel like screaming 'till your voice is gone. For me, FGM and this are two of those things. I'm tearing (TEERing not TAREing) up just allowing my consciousness to approach the borders of these thoughts; if I go too much further in to this post, I'll have a meltdown.
Ignorance isn't bliss.
