MeFi post: Life and death of a black and white
The murderer/rapist was in the US from age 3. He received the same treatment as anyone else born in America. Mexico's involvement in this case is moot.

If Bush was so worried about violating international law [chuckles] he should have commuted the sentence back in 1995 when he was governator of texas.

MeFi post: “The counter-argument to that, which I concurred with, was that this is a medical textbook that could save lives.”
War is only terrible if you experience it, or if you look it in the face. Unfortunately those who experience it will continue to do so until enough Americans open up their eyes and look the results in the face. The face of the soldiers who've sacrificed, of the face of the parents who've lost a generation, the face of a family without a father. C'mon, America, you get all psyched to watch a horror movie, or read a Stephen King novel. Here's the real thing, just less glossy. After you get... [more]

These four hep cats did a similar (though shorter @ 1400 mi) version of this trip in 1979, but it took them 70 days. [insert bong sound].

MeFi post: Studio Scavenging
Whimsical, slightly abstracted, large paintings of industrial decay. Nice. After briefly looking at all 28 of the linked photos I like it. She makes these giant hunks of forgotten steel look cartoon-ish. They are somewhat personified too - you can imagine the ghosts that worked and tended the massive machinery for yourself. It is darkly funny too because this shrapnel might be all we leave behind. We'll likely all be dust before those factories are, but in no time they'll be gone too. Rust... [more]

Looks like another Millionaire needs to make a donation to the homeless (or something). I hear 5 million Chinese are homeless after the earthquake. Bet one could house a lot of people inside this behemoth.

I am not an anti-flash snob. I am not female. I liked it. Just like anything else here on the filter: YMMV.

Q. What is the opposite of thread-crapping?
A. Thread-wiping.

MeFi post: May 25 tornado, Parkersburg, Iowa
Well, jrockway, after working Red Cross relief in the aftermath of several tornadoes in OK, KS, and TX I can tell you that you can certainly tell a difference between this tornado's effect and the May 3, 1999 tornado.

May 3, 1999:
More than 10,000 homes destroyed. 45 dead. The only things left standing in the direct path were foundations and pipe stubs, even the asphalt road was stripped in some areas. In some areas of Moore, OK there were two city blocks... [more]

Wow, upon reflection I didn't mean to come off sounding like a tornado snob and all. I'm sure all tornado victims share a strikingly similar set of harrowing experiences.

MeFi post: How Shoes Are Ruining the Human Foot
Based on this post I ended up getting the Vibram Five Fingers. I couldn't be happier. Even though I had to take the first pair back because they were too small (I punished myself for a full day in them on carpet at the house). When I went back and got the next size up it was absofreakinloutely amazing how comfortable they seemed. Weird yes, but really as close to barefoot as you can be with shoes on. When you buy them remember where because every time you go out in them someone will ask... [more]

MeFi post: Ice Cream Man, On My [Friggin'] Street ...
I drove a Safety Clown Ice Cream van from hell one summer after freshman year. TIt was a long, steamy summer with no air-conditioning and sunrise to sunset operations were mandatory 7_Days_A_week. he previous Safety Clown was arrested for dealing. I had some very interesting customers.

That aside, it was somewhat amazing how weighted the demographics of my best customers were to their poverty levels. This meant I spent much of my time in the low-end apt complexes and... [more]

And, just in case you are wondering... lonely housewives buy ice cream by the case;)

MeFi post: Genocide Chick or Genocide Chic?
Hillary supporters currently touting her expansive Foreign Affairs "experience" over Obama's seeming lack thereof should be strapped to a chair a la Clockwork Orange to enjoy a viewing of Hotel Rwanda. Hell, maybe the Clinton's could deign themselves to host, fund and also participate. At least that way we'd be sure the accommodations would be 1st class.

MeFi post: Game over man!!! (Maybe)
Having both formats in play at the moment I have to say that they both have their similarities and differences. The way the menus work and the way the in-movie menus work vary. Disc-load seems much longer on my HD-DVD. Of importance to me is that they both produce excellent images and sound.

I started with the PS3 connected via HDMI to a 1080p Plasma. This was great except for about a year I could only afford the occasional 2-for-1 BluRay sales. To buy a recent... [more]
posted to MetaFilter by HyperBlue at 1:39 PM on February 18, 2008
Oh, and just cause I enjoy the latest format doesn't preclude me from catching the occasional bit torrent or DiVX rip...It just means I'm willing to pay a premium when the content is of higher quality. For those who either 1) can't see/hear the difference in quality, or 2) just don't care that much then, well, the point is moot. Early adopters are the only ones at risk here anyway. Yep, I'd be pissed if I had paid $1000 for an early HD or BluRay model, but then I had $1000 to blow, and knew... [more]

MeFi post: There ain't no sin and there ain't no virtue. There is just stuff people do.
My grandparents were among the few to stay in the Panhandle of Texas and ride out the Dust Bowl. Our family album is filled with grainy sepia-toned pictures of dust drifts covering almost every structure. The weathered face of my grandfather looked like leather by age 25.

Eventually they scraped and were there to rebuild the cotton gins and towns. When my grandfather died in the 70's his funeral was attended by almost every single person in the small Cottle County... [more]

Unfortunates sometimes sought shelter in the county jail, and everyone deplored the dust storms.

Lyrical tributes to "The Beautiful Dust" appeared in the Paducah Post:

"The dust, the dust, the beautiful dust
On the evil and on the just,
From the North and from the South;
in the eyes, the nose, the mouth
Bear it calmly since you must
Wear it bravely as a crown.
Ope' your mouth and gulp it down."

Little River Band in 1979. I was 12 and wouldn't stop bitching about not getting to see Elvis or Kiss a coupla years prior. Mom took me and my little bro. Somebody passed her a doob. She was a fundie and didn't even know what it was. She shrugged, and then passed it on down the row. Reminiscing.
