Ask post: Can a one-way CFL bulb be used in a three-way socket?
I also have not had any problem in my 3 way lamp.

Point of fact: I originally bought the three way CFL for the lamp, and went through two or three in a week before I went 1-way. Haven't had to change the bulb since, and that was in 2003.

Ask post: Places to play poker in Manhattan?
Most bars would be very, very upset with this. If you are playing for real money, it's right out. If you're not playing for money, it still looks suspicious and places with liquor licenses tend to not like things that would put that license in peril.

Ask post: It's 98 outside and the A/C just went belly up!
HVAC is the family business, which I managed for a short time and worked a little in the field as go-fur, coil cleaner, etc. In this situation, we would - every time - recommend the new unit.

Now, I understand you don't want to throw down 5k. But, the unit is 22 years old, which is a little past the expected use lifespan. The coil replacement cost he's giving you seems on the level, but consider this - you're already spending 20% of the cost of replacement on the coil... [more]

Actually, to clarify, on small unit like that the compressor would probably be closer to 500 dollars, but my overall point about cost of current and future repair vs. cost of replacement still stand.

Ask post: Goodbye journalism?
Well, actually, in general humanities teaching positions are difficult to get. Unless, in my experience, that position is in English. (ESPECIALLY, English as a Second Langauge. And, no, you do not need to speak another language to be an ESL teacher) Since every student is required to get through four years of English, and since English is a NLCB (No Child Left Behind) test subject, English is the easiest of the humanities to break into.

1. How much do public high... [more]

Ask post: Which Paris metro ticket should I buy for a four day visit?
Just crunch some numbers and decide which is going to be cheaper for you: the carnets or the carte orange. Last time I went to paris, my friend and I picked up a CO for the week and were very, very happy with it.

Not only SpyBot, but how savvy is she? SpyBot S&D comes with a runtime element called TeaTimer that keeps stealth stuff from tampering with your registry files. I find that to be a HUGE help in keeping malware shit off my system. Either way, make sure that both AA and SpyBot are run regularly and auto updated.

Do NOT put Anti-Virus (especially Norton!) on the computer. It provides little to no protection, gobbles up processing, and is actually harder to fully get rid... [more]

Ask post: Should I have looked at my dead son?
You have to trust your instincts at the time. When I was 10, my 15 year old brother died in a car accident. I did not view see him in the hospital. I refused to attend the funeral. I think, even at the time, I realized he was gone and seeing a body in a box wasn't going to do too much for me.

One might think that, all these years later, I might regret that decision. But, I really don't. After all, my final, lasting memory is him in a chair with a great, goofy grin. Much... [more]

Ask post: Finding the Walls to Breakthrough
I'm not sure any current scientific models is in crisis mode right now, honestly: we seem to be firmly entrenched in Normal Science. There are obvious holes in knowledge and experimentation out there, but not so great as to throw everything into crisis. I have to agree with those above: go with what you love, and you'll find meaningful work. Chasing after the next Crisis, to me, is tilting at windmills.

Graceland. Meh, way, way overpriced and overhyped. Gus's is amazing. Our zoo is actually pretty surprisingly class, as well. Even one of the three places in the US to see Pandas.

If you want local BBQ. . . Well, ask 10 memphians and you'll get 11 answer. Any place that has gone regional/nation (corkys, Rendevous, etc. are way past their prime). Ask post: Practice makes perfect
Social Studies Teacher: I go to professional development as often as I'm able. I watch documentaries and search the web for topics related to my curricula. I find myself constantly seeing potential lesson plans, and writing those lesson plans in my head (even if I never use them). Also, family and friends sometimes come to me with questions historical or civic, and I get a chance to practice my 1-on-1 pedagogy and lecture skills.

Ask post: Things to eat and drink in Tennessee
Your best chance is probably to drive to Knoxville, if you don't mine the college town atmosphere, or Gatlinburg, if you don't mine the . . . uh. . . shitty version of Branson atmosphere. I can't in good conscious recommend anything Ober Gatlinburg, especially since several of those counties are dry, but in Knoxville Sunspot and Barleys are both great tap rooms with solid food (Barleys serves pizza and such, while Sunspot has very diverse and unique menu.)

Ask post: What is the "X factor" when it comes to classroom management?
It is, in many ways, an impossible question to answer, because it is so dependent on the personality of the instructor. Well, no, let me rephrase: the key to successful classroom management has nothing to do with "personality." What I mean is: I'm generally of the goofy and ironic humor sort of teacher, while another teacher down the hall is stern and unsmiling, while yet another of my colleagues is loud and bombastic. All three of us, compared to the average class in my school, have... [more]

Ask post: Setting down in the Land of the Delta Blues?
You are not going to die. I live in East Memphis, which is a perfectly wonderful part of town. Midtown is nice, but the most expensive part of town to live in. I wouldn't recommend downtown to live in at all. Not because of crime, but because of convenience. Downtown is all bars and malls and business, but nothing so pedestrian as a grocery store without driving a ways.

For the most part, you're going to find out that Memphis is pretty balkanized, so traditional ideas... [more]

All of the stuff above. Especially comments 2 and 3 and violetk. I do this, too, especially with pants. I usually hang them up somewhere out of the way, and usually put them in the bathroom with me while I'm showering so the steam will take out some of the crinkles from previous wear I usually have a rotation of two or three pants so that I don't wear the same pair twice in a row.

Ask post: Breathe, breathe in the air...
Uh, the way his question is phrased is an absolute mess, but let me take a stab.

First off, you're treating percentages as totals. That is to say, carbon that is currently trapped in places other than the atmosphere (wood, coal, oil, you and me) that is later relased does not lower the amount of oxygen available, only the percentage of the atmosphere that is made of up oxygen.

FYI: According to Wikipedia, the atmosphere "contains roughly... [more]

Ask post: What to do when your s-o doesn't come through in a pinch
Honestly, this would almost be a dealbreaker to me. This is nothing like shoes. Sure, her presence is not required, but the presence of a running car is, and it's absurd that she would not even drive out to offer the use of hers. At the very least, this is not a subject I would just file away. Relationships are about trust, love, and mutual aid. One out of three isn't going to work, if there's even that one.
posted to Ask Metafilter by absalom at 8:59 AM on December 14, 2007
But, yes, I agree that you should talk about the subject, not just dump her. Was she just not feeling like being inconvienced? Was she afraid to go into an unfamiliar neighborhood at night? There are a lot of questions left over from your initial one, and the devil's in the details.

Ask post: Book Circulation and Author Notoriety in antiquity through the middle ages.
Steven C. Den Beste: That is true, yes, but the heart of the question is about *fame*. So, in that case, how famous would a prominent theologian be across Europe.

Also: Your nitpick, I think, still really applies to medieval times, when I address both classical and medieval times in my question.

Sure, anything.
I guess something about the rate of diffusion of individual texts?
Perhaps a study of contemporary mentions of famous scholars, authors, and/or dramatists? Especially those that might be mentioned far outside their own regions within their own lifetimes.

If these questions are now way too specific, they're more to clarify what I'm looking for.

dogrose: scholarly curiosity. I probably boned everything up by making it too broad. (antiquity through medieval). Perhaps, Renown might be a better word for what I'm looking for. I hate that I was so vague above. I think I'd be rephrased as:

Were there any scholars of the classical or medieval eras who were well known, during their lifetimes, outside their own city-states or provinces? If so, how did their works spread fast enough for that to be the case?

I have to agree with the anxiety suggestions. In fact, this sounds very similar to some of my own past experiences.

At the beginning of my last two relationships, I had tremendous difficulty keeping the Melty-Man at bay. Oral sex, etc., were all just fine. But, once it came time for the rubber to meet the road, it was like my Grandmother just entered the room. Poof, nothing. Or, if not nothing, then premature ejaculation.
