Ask post: Cool theatre in Buenos Aires.
There was a festival at PS 122 last fall centered around theater from Buenos Aires. I particularly enjoyed "Women Dreamt Horses" by Daniel Veronese and "Ex-Antwone by Federico Leon. I'd google those playwrights' names, find out what theaters are doing their shows and just buy some tickets to whatever is on at those theaters.

Ask post: Hello, I am awesome and here is my portfolio.
As a current Columbia MFA directing student, I would first mention that the admission process for Columbia has changed--only Yale retains that weird "direct two actors you've never met" thing in an hour, but there is still a practical component to the directing audition. The thing about directing is that it requires you to articulate an idea, in space and time, with human beings, and that's what the interviewer wants to see. So at Columbia, the heads of the program spend the the... [more]

Ask post: How can I plan a Europe trip that won't end in PTSD?
If you're made out of money...then why not bring your boyfriend?

I traveled alone in Europe when I was in college, and I had a wonderful time, but I'm a tall dude, so nobody messed with me. You'd probably be fine if you stay smart and don't walk around in the sketchy parts of town. Knowing the language will be the most helpful--so pick a country where you'll know exactly what people are saying around you.

But I think the best advice is to bring... [more]

Ask post: TKTS - Downtown or Broadway?
I will third the downtown (South Street Seaport) location as the better deal. Much smaller lines, and remember to bring cash. But if you're buying tickets same day, and you don't mind waiting in line, I'd also second trying the rush tickets.

As a guide, I trust nytheatre.com more than timeout or the NYTimes.

And hey, if you're town, ...try an Off-broadway or Off-Off-Broadway show. The tickets will be cheaper and you may discover something new and... [more]

I'll third anything by Chris Ware. I hooked my girlfriend on "Jimmy Corrigan." I'd also look at comics by Jeffrey Brown 'Clumsy' in particular went over really well with the old girlfriend.

Some great answers in this thread. I would again recommend the use of Vermouth and Sherry instead of wine. The flavor is wonderful and they keep at room temperature.

Ask post: no funny headline
I don't have any personal experience with their loft beds, but I purchased a platform bed from Gothic Cabinet Craft about 3 weeks ago, and I've been really happy with it. Delivery was included and it was a very reasonably price and well constructed bed.
Here are the loft beds that they have for sale.

Ask post: Making a playlist of mp3 snippets. Is it possible?
I'm not sure how to do this in winamp, but if you're using itunes, use the "get info" function click on the "Options" tab and there you can change the "Start Time" and "Stop time" then click "ok" and you'll get a new shorter track which you can then put into a new playlist.

Ask post: Lets Pool Our CollectiveKnowledge About Underground Theatre !
I'd keep your eye on the high school gallery.

When I was visiting from NYC, a friend took me to an Anatomy Collective show at the gallery which had puppets and dance. I think the group might be disbanding, but I'm not sure. Definitely keep looking for their shows.

The Spareroom also hosts some really cool shows that are pretty new, mostly a dance focus, but occasionally you'll see some theater. And if you haven't heard of them already, I'd... [more]

Ask post: What art should I see in NYC?
I second the Whitney Biennial, the Neue Gallery, and MOMA.

and I would highly recommend going to some different galleries. A great listening of the various openings is here. Check it the week before your trip and you'll find tons of cool stuff.

Ask post: Goodbye, Metafilter. Hello, cubicle.
When I was writing my thesis, and I kept getting sucked into a huge time-wasting vortex of the Internet, I set my homepage to this which was really helpful, at least for a little while.

It helps to play the little game that lalalana mentioned and the site keeps track of it for you. Best of luck.

Ask post: Urge to bite, rising.
An ex-girlfriend of mine was a biter, and used it to express affection. (Note: Neither of us were/are members of any BDSM community)

It weirded me out at first, but after awhile I didn't mind it.

Judging by the responses here, biting seems pretty normal.

Ask post: Life makes me sick.
I spent a summer working in a hospital in high school, and I vividly remember a nurse who was totally normal except she would barf constantly. She dealt with all the nasty stuff that nurses have to deal with,(blood, urine, vomit, fecal matter and worse) and was totally calm, never complained about it, but as we would be dealing with something gross-blood, etc, she would pause, apologize, step away, and then vomit. She'd quickly clean up and then return to business, completely unfazed, like... [more]

Ask post: scanning old photo slides
I was in a slightly similar position (lotsa slides and the need to preserve them for posterity) and rather than waste my time and energy scanning them myself, I paid somebody else to do it.

(there is an entire story behind it, but here are my reccomendations)
1. Don't go to a crappy 1-hour photo place to get them to scan it for you. The quality is terrible and they won't care. Always ask to see the scans before you pay for them.

Ask post: My Garden Runneth Over
Alton Brown (who I trust in all these things) did a great episode about how to make your own pickles. You could probably even find the episode on a bittorrent site somewhere, but the easiest thing is to read the transcript of his show American Pickle where he explains, how and why to pickle. You don't need any new gear to pickle, and it's fun and good.

Alton also did an episode on canning, specifically jamming which also may be of interest to you.... [more]

Ask post: Grand camping?
Havasu Falls. There is nothing better than hiking all the way down through the grand canyon, getting hot, dirty and sweaty, and then turning a corner and finding a bright blue beautiful waterfall. One of the most spectacular experiences of my life. If you are a experienced hiker, I HIGHLY reccomend hiking to the falls. I did a night hike, (during the day in the summer would be killer) and we got there just as the sun was coming up. We spent a day maybe two hanging out in the falls and relaxing... [more]

Ask post: Porn in the woods.
Porn in the woods is a worldwide phenomenon.
In sixth grade, I took my first trip to Versailles, (also my first trip to France) with members of my French class. As the rest of my classmates explored the hall of mirrors and looked at god-knows-what-else, my friend and I wandered through the gardens. It was raining, so nobody else was there, and we were probably looking to get into trouble. At the far end of the garden, next to a tree on the far side of the reflecting pool, we... [more]

Ask post: Strawberries and Food Dye
equipoise is exactly right, no one in this thread is really answering the question. I KNOW that naturally grown strawberries are red, but I can't tell (and no one has been able to prove me to me) that strawberries are sometimes sprayed a certain color to make them appear redder, and increase the likelihood of people buying them. I mean, I know, oranges are picked green and then sprayed orange, so it seems likely that produce growers might do the same to strawberries. Have I stumped Ask... [more]

Wow Miko. The whole spraying green oranges was something that my grandmother used to say. I'm reluctant to let my housemate win this debate, but it appears that there isn't any evidence that that strawberries are colored in any way. I concede defeat. Agh..that bittter taste...

Ask post: Internet site blocking
I find this site remarkably helpful. Just set it as your homepage, and before that procrastination can even begin, you've got a reminder, and you set a task. It requires a little discipline to set the task but once you get used to it, the counter becomes a remarkably satisfying tool, and a good way to hold yourself accountable.

I haven't tried them yet, but I've had my eye on these really cool looking bags for quite awhile now. Elegant, stylish, seems to be appropriate for business, but if you scroll down and check around the site, they have a hip looking messenger bag. Ask post: Non-drowsy motion sickness remedies?
I used to barf on planes all the time as a small kid. For some reason, my mother began giving me bubblegum before/during takeoff, and something about the sugar really helped me. So, try some sugary gum, (i liked juicy fruit) and just chew during takeoff and any time you feel sick. I don't get sick anymore but in airports I still buy a pack of gum before getting a plane just in case.

Also in the Jardin des Plantes park, les Galeries de Paléontologie et d'Anatomie comparée is an incredible experience, and way better than the Galerie of Evolution. It's a little weird and creepy, but still nerdy. It's a VERY old museum that seems to be untouched from the 19th century, and reflects the science and spirit of the times. It is just a giant room filled with different types of slightly dusty bones ranging from dinosaur, to whale, and everything in between. It's actually sorta... [more]

I'd say try The Redwalls. I saw them over winter break in Chicago at the Hideaway. Two weird things: 1. They sound like a beatle cover band playing all those obscure songs you've never heard, except they're really playing their own original music. 2. And I think they're really young. Really young. Like it seems like they're still in high school.

But they do have some of that vocal harmony flavor that you're looking for, and c'mon they're SO indie and hip. Check out the... [more]

I have two LaCie big disk drives, that I use to store video files that I edit in Final Cut Express, and I must say that these drives work great (not a shill, I swear) I've been able to play back video and edit in real time and not have to wait for it to load.

Additionally, I travel a pretty fair amount, and haven't had any trouble (and believe I've shaken these drives a pretty fair amount)...and I remember vaguely that I could get them pretty cheaply through Amazon, or Best Buy.

I'm a Norelco T765 user as well. I keep it on the setting of four, and then take off the guard to clean up throat and cheek hair. Works great for me, and the GF seems to like the way it looks.

But then again, I've never used anything else...so maybe there is something out there that is much better.

I use Studentuniverse.com to book my flights, and I've generally had really good experiences flying with them, and getting good deals. They were even very helpful and helped me refund a ticket when I found out that I couldn't go to Germany. But you must be a verified student or faculty member. I've also heard about flying courier, but I think that you need to be part of a membership club to be able to fly those flights.

In high school I hosted a radio show, that my cohost and I tried to improvise on-air, a radio theater piece. We cooked up an incredible storyline with all sorts of plot twists, and we did the sound effects and character voices all in realtime. It worked brilliantly for the first two shows, and then we burnt ourselves out, and ended up just playing Bob Marley songs and dancing in booth for the rest of the year.

So, perhaps don't try to improvise the whole thing, but... [more]

By the way, for all of those who put the stuffing inside the turkey, according to Alton Brown, it's a bad idea.
Here is a quote from his Romancing the Bird: The Good Eats Thanksgiving Episode.

"Stuffing, by and large, is evil. It adds mass which increases the cooking time and that leads to dry meat. It's also a haven for bacteria like salmonella and it's good buddy campylobacter. Neither of which make very good side dishes.... [more]
