Too Much Caffeine
This made me angry because it was SO CLEARLY a desperate attempt at a publicity stunt. I mean, if you're going to do something stupid, and put it on the internet, then at least do it only for the sake of doing something stupid, not because you want to be famous, and that you hope this will help your comedy career.

Educators Offer Classrooms to Many Displaced Students
I had my first day of Grad school orientation at Columbia, and in front of the entire school, the Dean announced that Columbia would be hosting students from New Orleans if they were living in New York.
I don't know why there isn't an official annoucement-maybe it's a word of mouth thing. The dean basically said "The University will be allowing studens from Tulane to take classes and if you know any Tulane students who are in New York, we are hope to help them in... [more]

American Theater magazine did a series of articles about hip-hop theater. Some were purely celebratory, but this article is a well-reasoned critique and defense of hip-hop in the theater.
You can find the rest of the articles by clicking through the links.

I've seen the bombity of errors..and while it's certainly easy to say that they're dumbing down Shakespeare by removing the elements of the performance (the language) that make it great, it still was incredible to watch and extremely entertaining.
This thread is probably dead, but if we're going to have a discussion of hip-hop theater, the important thing is to examine the role of it in society, whether or not it's being used as "a cool way to get kids to learn... [more]

Is there a Better Case for the Arts
I'm not all that thrilled by a return to advancing "intrinsic value," even as it's been dressed up in a new outfit by the very smart folks at Rand. To me case making is about language and ideas that make sense to other people, not just to us. I've been in plenty of meetings in which the secretary of the symphony board from some midwestern city tried to convince a member of Congress that classical music "uplifts the soul." I prefer talking about economic impact and... [more]

there is something wrong about the angle on Gene Kelly's pasted-on face. It really creeps me out. Anyone else notice this?

From Pie to Pantalaimon?
papercake and mr_roboto, I saw HDM Part 1 at the National theatre last march. It was enormous, incredible show; and fascinating to watch. I hadn't read anything by Pullman, I just knew about the director, Nicholas Hytner. Needless to say I was very impressed both by the direction and the script. The sheer scale of the show is astounding, and the puppet work for the daemons was really beautiful. However like azazello mentioned, there were some parts of the play that couldn't capture the fantasy... [more]

Economic 'Armageddon'
More bad news: the one of the top economic advisors for Bush who is a member of the concord coalition, a non-partisan anti-deficit group, resigned today.
I'm not trying to turn this into a political thread...but we can't talk about this issue without talking about who is making these decisions.
