Ask post: Is TV real?!?
Re: Monday's The Closer it's similar to any of the forensic shows on TV these days....real in a sense that it can be done but isn't done nearly as often as they show on TV.

Also, I don't know anyone who would go near something like that without gloves in this day and age.

Ask post: Travel - Make 'em learn without realizing it!
In downtown Hartford you can visit The Wadsworth Atheneum which is a pretty decent art museum (for Hartford at least).

About 15 min from Hartford you can visit Dinosaur State Park in Rocky Hill CT and see preserved dinosaur tracks and go for a short walk though the woods on some trails they have there (Dinosaur park is at most an hour or so long visit).

Ask post: Small, marked bills
Most of those counterfeit detecting pens use a Iodine-Starch reaction. If you add iodine to starch (you can try the stuff you have in your medicine cabinet, a few drops on a cracker or half a fresh potato) you get a dark blue-black color. The pens work on the principle that most common paper (printer, copier, writing, ect.) is starched and will react with the iodine in the pen turning the mark blue-black. What they use for paper money is less paper per-say and more a cotton-linen blend (along... [more]

Ask post: Baking treats without baking people
Last summer we just had one window AC unit for the really hot days. To try and make the most of the cold air I put a tarp up over the door/passage between the living room and kitchen. Not exactly the most stylish but it did a decent job of keeping the cool air in the living room and hot air (made worse when cooking with the stove) in the kitchen.

Ask post: Vegetarian Food Off the Pike
I can recommend Paul and Elizabeth's in Northampton,MA, which is about 15 min north of Springfield. A little pricey maybe, but good food and is inside the Thorne's Marketplace which is worth a visit in and of it self for the neat little shops.

Ask post: How to find replacement skeleton keys for old locks?
Most hardware stores or even big home improvement stores likely sell replacement keys. We have an old house too and a few years back the Truevalue hardware down the street had 2 packs of skeleton type keys, two different styles, that both worked in all our locks.

Ask post: I just wanna know where da gold
I went years ago on a school trip. There was a movie about the Fed Reserve and what they do, a mini museum display and then we got to go down to the vault area where, after passing though a like 6 foot thick revolving door, we could see the piles of gold bars behind wire cages. I don't know what changes they may of made in recent years but I found it interesting back then and would like to go back now.

Ask post: Why does the devil keep coming here?
This clip from the claymation Adventures of Mark Twain is based on that "The Mysterious Stranger" story that Toekneesan was taking about. I remember it being disturbing when I watched it as a kid, and re-watching is now....well it is still sort of disturbing for a kids movie.

Ask post: Where should I eat while doing jury duty in Jamaica, Queens?
I work on Jamaica ave and there are a ton of food places, just most of them aren't that good from what we found.

One street up from Jamaica is Hillside Ave, just past hillside and Parsons ave (near the F subway stop) is Falafel station, kosher falafel place. Have really good falafel and with a soda its something like 6$, as well as other similar type food. Only thing to keep in mind is they close at 2 on Fridays and aren't open Saturdays but for Jury duty it won't matter much.

Ask post: Time Glitch
The digital clocks we had at one of my old jobs would be fine until we switched over to the backup generator in the summer when power was at a demand. They would start drifting and by the end of the day be almost 30 minutes fast.

Ask post: I've fallen into a Motor Vehicle Rabbit Hole
Having just been through 6 months of NY DMV hell I can sympathize. On top of the other recommendations people have given I would add that you might be better off dealing more with CT then NY, if for no other reason than CT is the smaller of the two bureaucracy's and you might have better luck getting through to someone who will actually want to use their brain and figure out the situation with you.

Ask post: How to make a delicious raspberry cordial/liqueur?
My grandfather used a recipe about the same as the one Malor suggests except he would soak the berries in about a cup of sugar for a day or two first, then add the alcohol. I've tired it a few times (though with frozen berries) and it's always came out alright. Id say high quality alcohol is almost more important then the fresh berries though, even with the fruit you can really taste it when it's the cheap stuff.

Ask post: Looking for help and suggestions on an illusion/science experiment/bit of alchemy I can perform.
I don't know how well it would work in a party setting but you can easily turn copper pennies into Gold (well semi-easily)

1. Gently heat a solution of Sodium Hydroxide on a hotplate with some Zinc metal shavings.

2. Into this solution place a few copper pennies (older ones work better supposedly but I never saw much difference) move them around with tongs and in a few minutes they will turn silver. You can take them out, dip them in water to... [more]

Ask post: MacGyver Cell Phone Charging Hack
We recently spent a weekend at a hotel in NH. While checking in a man came up asking if they had found his cell phone charger he left in his room. Front desk woman said he would have to check with house keeping for his specific charger but then brought out a milk crate FULL with at least 100 different models/types of cell phone chargers that had been left over the years...might be worth a shot...

Don't know about number 2 but to secure your wireless go into your router settings and turn on "WPA" encryption (if for some reason your computer wont support WPA, you can use WEP but its not AS secure (though will stop the casual user from surfing on your connection).

Liquid nitrogen ice cream is a long standing right of passage for those who work in labs with access to said material, well that along with freezing anything they can get their hands on just to see what happens when they hit it with a hammer.

As for science demos sadly there aren't too many that are wedding friendly/not messy. Science is messy, thats part of the fun.

I get frozen mice for my snake shipped to me here in NYC from a place in texas. They just use a cardboard box with all sides lined with the blue insulation board foam stuff you can get at any of the home improvement stores, with dry ice on top of that. Then they send them over night FexEx which is expensive but still cheaper for me then going to one of the chain pet stores.

Also wish I had a friend who would mail me ice cream!

Ask post: Growing a computer forensic investigation business
I'm a forensic scientist working in NYC (with some forensic computer training) and REALLY like the idea of teaching lawyers more forensics. Having to testify in court on cases sadly most lawyers and jurors get a majority of their forensics knowledge from CSI, which is really just sad! So anyone who can help get more of the legal system brought up to speed on the science behind what we do would be a great help to us all.
