MeFi post: Boing Boing Finds 21st Century Trotsky?
Don't you think Boing Boing has, at the least, handled this badly? They know how things work on the Web. This is like throwing red meat to hungry dogs.

Since the folks at Boing Boing do know how things work on the Web, I suspect there's something more to this story. Since Patrick Nielsen Hayden posted as he did at Making Light, I suspect whatever "more" there is has nothing to do with either Teresa or Cory Doctorow,... [more]

MeFi post: The "dynamic octagenarian duo"
Their [i]Superbad[/i] review was pretty funny stuff, both of them seeming to take the position that the vulgarity weakened the thing and made it bad, but both of them genuinely appreciating how unvarnished and unsentimental the portrait of youthful sexual appetite was, and how NOT-fake the kids are in it. It's as if they liked the movie in spite of themselves and their awareness that they ought not like it. I like them! Thank you for the post, jbickers. MetaFilter gives us another one!

MeFi post: "You know, there's something stirring about the peaceful transfer of no power"
The McCain "walkout" was a mockup, a joke. He waves a good-natured goodbye before returning to his seat; Stewart's shouting was also mock outrage; all jokes.

Watch it yourself. (Although it's in Part 2, and I've linked Part 1 so you can see the whole interaction. It's about 10 or 12 minutes total.)

This whole article reads to me like a weirdly off-topic advertisement for some product I cannot identify, and which I, well, DO NOT WANT.

There's probably a word for not being surprised at all that an internet discussion about lesbians has devloved into a series of predictable puns and innuendo.

MeFi post: The Open Source Boob Project
When I read about this at Scalzi's weblog Whatever (which is down for the moment, so linking cain't happen) I misunderstood and thought the whole project had been organized initially by a woman. I kept thinking that for the first few comments in this thread—not having clicked through to the link—and when I realized it was a man who put it together, my whole attitude just inverted or something. At first I thought it was bizarre fun; now I think it's inept and will return to... [more]

MeFi post: Portishead in Portishead
Making a Portishead post without linking to this very decent Guardian piece or to this this good piece in the NYT doesn't make any sense to me.

The album—which I've heard twice now—is different, spikier, weirder than their first two, which I loved as much as I've ever loved any record. I suspect, with time and repeated listening, I will love this one as much.

Hey, no worries, hypersloth. I borked the NYT link, which should go to "After a Decade Away, Portishead Returns", but didn't.

You know what? I'm sorry, miss lynnster. There was no point in remarking on the doubling except a loose attempt at humor, and it wasn't funny, and you were doing no harm.

MeFi post: Jimmy's Fucking Ben Affleck
This was already posted in an open thread, so I dunno if it flies on its own. It's funny, especially if you thought the original Silverman/Damon clip was funny.
posted to MetaFilter by cgc373 at 5:22 AM on February 25, 2008
That's that bean-plate thing, isn't it broodle? Although, to play along, as has been noted by ericb and—in passing—by awesomebrad, both Damon and Affleck are in committed relationships, which would supposedly exempt them from the evolutionarily-imposed demand of procuring mates, right? They're out of that market now. So how does their willingness to make fun of themselves by participating in Kimmel and Silverman's extended skit correlate with any kind of mating behavior? Are Damon and Affleck... [more]

Not funny, moonbiter. Not funny at all. If you're going to go meta, you have to bring in culturally-approved reinforcement from published sources, otherwise you're opining on your own merits, which is tantamount to asking us—them—whomever—to take you down. It's like turning yourself into chum and pouring yourself into an ocean thronged with sharks.

As far as the pictures, I guess I don't see the Kincade connection so readily as I see a Norman Rockwell thing happening. So much staged fun, such a provocative sense of vitality, movement, and overall well-being, as if things are really okay where these... [more]

Wow, that metaphor makes my head hurt, Eekacat. The Photoshop verb maps onto karate, so you're karate chopping the images, which are then . . . tenderized? So we can taste them and the taste is palatable? My mind, she shrieks, she questions, she cannot imagine this!
posted to MetaFilter by cgc373 at 10:11 AM on February 12, 2008
You didn't use Photoshop as a verb, Eekacat; I just interpreted the karate image as a way to refer to using Photoshop, and then I confused things further by using the verb "map," which probably wasn't the wisest writing choice I've ever made. And in fact, the thing is meant as a joke in any case, because I really have no headache and I like the imagery. I like suggestive, vivid prose. No criticism intended.
