Ask post: Clapton Filter
Quoting Guitar Player, January 1999:It is deified as the perfect evocation of a blues-rock guitar solo by practically everyone--the notable exception being the cat who actually played it.

"I've always had `Crossroads' held up as, like, one of the great landmarks of guitar playing," said Eric Clapton in an April '98 interview with Britain's Mojo. "But most of that solo is on the wrong beat. Instead of playing on the two and four, I'm... [more]

An elderly relative passed away last year, and the bulletin board at his funeral included a decades-old photograph of him riding a tractor that he had built. Apparently he built two.

I thought that was cool. Sadly, I've never built any tractors.

That description fits the Prybaby Keychain Edition.

Ask post: How can we pick post-marriage names that satisfy our contradictory criteria?
What I'm looking for is other options we haven't thought of...

Smith. Johnson. Williams. Jones. Brown. Et cetera.

If you're locked into the idea that your surname needs to carry "meaning," then maybe that option isn't for you. But since you mentioned computers and practicality, it's worth considering that common names confer instant anonymity and nobody ever asks how they're spelled.

Ask post: Those black traffic cables
They measure traffic by counting the number of cars that drive over them. You know those rubber hoses at the gas station that ring the bell when you drive over them? Same principle.

By putting 2 cables a few yards apart, you can distinguish between traffic in each direction: If cable A is activated before cable B, then you're driving north. If B is activated before A, then you're driving south.

There are reasons to accompany coworkers on a social outing — reasons which have nothing whatsoever to do with the nature or destination of that outing — that don't apply to a "fun couple's night out."

If her coworkers are "celebrating a large milestone from work," then she ought to tag along regardless of where they go. I would, in her shoes; and if I were you, I'd consider not focusing on the fact that it's a strip club, because that may be... [more]

On the low-tech side of suggestions, what I usually do is Print --> Save as PDF (on a Mac). I don't know whether there's a comparable solution for Windows, but a screenshot would also suffice. PDF versus JPG, either way you've got the content easily saved in an accessible format.

Folks are correct that it depends on the industry and location, and obviously the peculiarity of whichever company you're applying to — but based on the only criteria you specified ("major companies" whose job "requirements always include a BS in a related field"), I would feel confident speculating that yes, they will verify your education.

As a music copyist, I've had problems with hand cramps and yes, practice helps. If you use ballpoint, switch to rollerball for easier ink flow (which requires less pressure, which is easier on your hand). Spend some money on a decent one, even just a Cross. It makes a difference.

FutureMe should work great...

Last time I tried, FutureMe rejected any submission set to delay less than 1 year. Right now it appears to be set for a 90-day minimum — so no, it probably won't work for your "next few weeks" purpose.

On the other hand, I can confirm that it does work for periods >1 year.

Ask post: Why would Starbucks throw perfectly good coffee away?
Slight tangent:

Why would Starbucks throw perfectly good coffee away?

If I recall correctly, the employee manual states that brewed coffee must be disposed of after 3 hours. This creates tension with the pressure on managers to reduce costs — since obviously, one easy solution is to keep coffee hot until it's sold.

On paper, Starbucks is committed to... [more]

I tend to agree with bunnycup, but if you do decide to talk to your sister I'd suggest that a key distinction is: Don't "tell" her. Ask.

Are there surveillance cops watching for this sort of thing?

Yes, there are. Every year around July 4, the MA state police put a couple patrols around the border (95, 93, 495, and Route 3, southbound all) looking for fireworks visible inside cars. They also look for vans smuggling the fireworks into MA for resale; if you're driving a van through Chelmsford on July 3 and you spot a cruiser, keep to the speed limit.

You are a slacker. Whether you feel bad about the behavior is irrelevant. It's like saying, "I'm not a womanizer. Sure, I go through about 200 one-night stands in a year...but I always feel bad." One way to overcome a low undergraduate GPA is to establish a new, higher GPA. Find a community college and take classes, either toward another degree (associate's?) or not. If you lived in Boston, for example, you could enroll in night classes at Harvard Extension School and study whatever you like. Admissions departments recognize maturity; if you can show them a recent year of straight-A's, they'll give less weight to your 5-year-old 2.1.
