Ask post: PainFilter
See your primary care physician, who will most likely give you a prescription to see a physical therapist.

Ask post: Why is my laptop so hot, and what laptop can I buy that won't burn me?
(I'm aware of this battery charging/calibration issue- it's still too hot. Also, I did have my battery recalled already).

Ask post: Help me fart less.
1 serving of plain yogurt, every day, will resolve this issue for you so fast that you'll wonder why you had to spend an entire 7-8 years worrying about it.

Ask post: Does anyone remember this "long photo" from SFMOMA?
Those were some interesting videos, and it may be the same artist, but the video I have in mind wasn't on that link. Either way, now I found a new artist I'm into! Any other guesses?

Ask post: Literary works anticipacting the future trends
In Carl Sagan's Contact, written in 1985 but set in the millenium, he keeps mentioning 'asynchronous telenetting', which I'm pretty sure just means e-mail.

Ask post: In my time of dying
Just about every song on Bright Eyes' "Digital Ash in a Digital Urn" is about death, and they run the gamut in terms of how depressing they are. The first song that came to mind when I read your question was "Arc of Time (Time Code)," and then "I believe in Symmetry," and "Light Pollution" (that ones less about death than about someone who died), but really, download the whole album.

Ask post: Tell me about this harmonica.
The only thing I have to go by on the age is that it was bought in Germany by my grandpa for 5.50 (marks, I guess). So if anyone has any idea when that model of Harmonica cost 5 marks, that's how we can figure out the age.
Bluefrog, thanks for the info! (and it is wood)

Ask post: How can I get the data off of these iOmega zip disks?
I know what's on them- journals and poetry I wrote as an angsty teenager. So, keep that in mind in terms of how much I'm willing to spend to get the data back. I'm mildly curious, not dying to see.
posted to Ask Metafilter by BuddhaInABucket at 12:07 PM on January 22, 2008
actually, after looking on ebay and realizing I'm not even willing to spend the 12 bucks it would take to get a drive, I guess the whole point is moot as it would not get any cheaper than that. Theoretically though, are there any businesses that offer this kind of data retrieval?

OK, thanks folks- turns out the kinkos nearest to me has zip drives on some of their computers! Problem solved. (Thanks anyway shinynewnick!)

Ask post: Six-figure prices
Just as an aside, in Iran the official currency is the Rial, but people always talk about things costing X Tomans... A toman is 10 Rial, so if something costs 1000 rial, it'd be 100 toman... but it's a little bit more complicated than that. Generally you know the order of magnitude in rial something is going to cost, so if I'm taking a taxi somewhere and they say '1 toman' they probably mean a thousand rial, whereas if you're buying silver in the bazaar and they say it's 1 toman, they probably... It's impossible to specifically define 'one location' but basically I mean one contiguous area that is small enough to be interesting.

Ask post: Why is this cold taking so long?
I had a cold that got better except for nasal drip for two weeks, a symptom that other friends reported from recent colds as well. Sometimes a symptom just lingers for longer then the main part of the cold.

Ask post: Help me "name" our new black Prius
I named my Prius 'Steve,' after Steve Prefontaine, the famous runner also went by 'Pre'. Like Prefontaine, my Prius could just keep on going forever on one tank of gas!
A topical update? How about Haile, after Haile Gebrselassie, who just set a new world record in the marathon? He's black, so it works with the color theme, too ;)

For that matter, "What it Means When a Crowd in a Faraway Nation Takes a Soldier Representing Your Own Nation, Shoots Him, Drags Him from His Vehicle and Then Mutilates Him in the Dust," is probably relevant as well, if not exactly about 9/11.

Ask post: Help me get "Loom" running on my Powerbook
Apparently the game is no longer available for sale as of 2006, so that makes it legal to emulate, right?
I wouldn't have a clue where to get the actual game file.

Yes, well, I did originally own the game, so... am I OK with abandonware?
Also, I am running scummVM but it greys out all of the loom files in the directory I downloaded. What file does it need to run the game?

Ask post: noisy kitty.
My understanding, and personal experience, is that 'tuxedo cats' like yours are just chatty. My former roommate had a tuxedo kitten that would not shut up, ever. We decided to ignore him and let him meow it out, but it didn't work-- he actually went hoarse, and he still wouldn't stop. What ended up happening? He just grew out of it. I'm gonna guess the same will happen for you.

Ask post: If you were doing the Peace Corps, what reading material would you bring with you?
How about the canterbury tales? If you pick up a copy of the Riverside Chaucer, you will have well over a thousand pages of Canterbury Tales, and hundreds of pages of corollary notes to go with it. If the fact that the Riverside Chaucer is in the original Middle English is a problem for you, there're translations into modern English, though I can't think of any in particular to recommend to you. Still, you want a year to kill? Learn Middle English. Honestly, it's not that hard and most of the... [more]

Ask post: Help me translate two phrases into Farsi
neda's translation of #1 is too literal for me and doesn't sound like how anyone I know speaks farsi (and it would actually just be 'javab-ra nemidoonam, not javab-e ra). I would just say:

1) "nemidoonam"
and
2) "aslan nemidoonam"

If it's imperative that the word "answer" be included, I would say 1) "javab-ra nadaram" which means "I don't have the answer"

Ask post: TongueFilter: Why does my tongue burn so easily?
Excuse me for not having a citation, but my understanding is that a lifetime of drinking piping-hot drinks increases your risk of mouth/tongue/throat cancer. Perhaps you don't have a problem, but are actually highly evolved to avoid cancer?

Ask post: Gift certificates expiration date is legal?
I don't know the specific legal details, they're probably in saffry's link, but the answer to your question is no. They are not allowed to expire, but what happens with most gift cards as opposed to certificates is that after a certain amount of time has passed, a monthly fee is assessed on the card to drain out the remaining balance. This has the effect of 'expiring' your card for you if you don't use it for a long enough time.

Here's how I see it: Throughout Asia, there are offers of huge salaries and bonuses for anyone with a pulse and english fluency. They are DESPERATE for teachers. Why would they be desperate for teachers? Because it's a SUCKY place to teach and job conditions are horrible.... [more]
