I have a 50,000 word medical thesis to write. I don't want it to end up looking like a big ugly Word document, just printed out on A4 and bound. I would like some graphic design inspiration/tips for making it look more like a real book, which would actually be a pleasure to pick up and read.

“If you’re a prostate cancer survivor, one of the hardest things to question is whether your treatment was worth it.”
In 2003
Professor Alan Coates, then chief executive of the Cancer Council of Australia, caused a media storm, when he suggested that based on available evidence he personally would not undergo
PSA screening for prostate cancer. This month's RSM journal analyses the
Australian media response in
detail.

"
The world is at the beginning of a structural change of its economic system. This
change will be triggered by declining fossil fuel supplies and will influence almost
all aspects of our daily life."
The new Oil Report from Energy Watch Group makes a strong case that we have now passed peak oil.

An obituary for Lord Michael Pratt a classic British toff. Despite his expertise on
Central European country houses it seems he will be best remembered as:
"one of the last Wodehouseian figures to inhabit London's clubland and...an unabashed snob and social interloper on a grand scale." Many more hilarious and unkind details about his schooling:
"He was sent to Eton, having already acquired the rotund shape that would stay with him for the rest of his life.", and his boozing:
"He was also a leading light in another Oxford club called the Snuff Committee, the sole purpose of which was to take snuff and drink port. Membership was by invitation only; the only stipulation was that one had to be the son of a landowner." Wags are already describing it as
"the least hagiographic obit ever published".

Can we have an end of year competition for the best "Metafilter: Spoof tagline" comments? (e.g.
MetaFilter: Squirrels, jesus, orange juice, or whatever.). It could link to lots of good threads, with the winner being decided by whoever gets the most favourites. My suggestion for a prize would be the magic ability to turn on img tags for a single unannounced 24 hour period of the winner's choosing, anytime in the next 12 months.

Could the "Post" button on new AskMe questions trigger a script to check that the first part of the question ends either in a "." or a "?"? This would bring an end to the
[more inside] "witticisms" (e.g. Assuredly there's [more inside]). I realise it is minor, and that I have also once been guilty of propagating this lame disruptive meme.

My Bosch oven door has gradually stopped closing entirely, unless I prop it shut. I have dissected the spring hinges, and cannot figure out the cause of the problem. Propping the door shut takes hardly any pressure, so I've decided to fit magnets on the inside of the door so it will auto-close. There is space for magnets up to about 1cm deep each. Which magnets should I buy, taking into account cost, strength, heat stability, and possible toxicity?

In England it's common for football (soccer) fans to declare their team allegiance by saying "I'm X" rather than "I'm an X supporter". For example today I overheard this snippet of conversation:
Football supporter 1: "Are you Liverpool?"
Football supporter 2: "No, I'm Arsenal."
It's as if the team defines an entire person. Where and how did this turn of phrase evolve, and is it common with any other sports in other places?

Some of the current adsense ads running for non-members seem inappropriate. For example
soulmate calculator, which appears to be a data harvesting, phone spam service. The UK version of the site doesn't even have any T&Cs, to make it clear you are signing up for £9/month of unwanted ringtone/wallpaper hell. Can the adsense filtering be turned up a notch, in line with our community values?

I'm sure this is too simple to require the skills of the PowerpointGuruHiveMind, but I can no longer edit datasheets in Microsoft Graph, in order to create new charts in Powerpoint for Mac 2004. I must have checked some kind of "protect data" checkbox as a default, but I can't find it to switch back. Sheer frustration must have overwhelmed my google-fu.

Having suffered the ignominy of my first ever (undoubtedly deserved) deleted post, I have four questions:
1. What's the record for deleted posts from one user?
2. How many users have themselves ever been deleted / indefinitely suspended?
3. Is it possible to delete your own account in protest, and has anyone ever done it?
4. Do mathowie and jessamyn have the power to delete each others' posts?

MacBook doesn't seem to want to burn any CD-Rs. I'm trying to back up my data for the first time, but as soon as burning starts I get an error message:
"Burning the disc failed because an unexpected error occurred. (Error code 0x80020000)"
It doesn't seem to be one particular disc, and I've never had a problem like this before on any other mac. Any advice?
