MeFi post: Next Up, Let's Work on Coulter's Adam's Apple ...
It's more okay than photoshopping someone's head onto a turnip. And that's considered an all time highlight of British tabloid journalism.

Hi.

We are just shy of 500 comments to go before we beat the record holding 56002 thread. If everyone stopped by to say "Hi", we'd be there by morning.

Did anyone point out violetbluevioletblue.net yet? It's an archive of the "unpublished" posts.

MeFi post: Ingrid Is Free (reportedly)
I'm really curious to see to what degree she has Stockholm syndrome. There hasn't been too much of an update about Clara Rojas, but reports at the time of her release, and the existence of her son, suggested that she was very friendly with her captors.

MeFi post: ...if waterboarding does not constitute torture, then there is no such thing as torture.
I had no idea MetaFilter hated Hitchens so much.

His political views clearly don't universally chime with those of your average MeFite (pro-atheist=good, pro-iraq war=not so good), but he's sincere enough about his beliefs that he's prepared to test and refute his previous position on waterboarding.

Get your cameras out now, folks, cause you won't see that very often from anyone on Metafilter.

MeFi post: BREAKING NEWS: Americans Love War, Drugs, see War on Drugs as No-Brainer
Although daska is right to point out that the UK is not included, the US are still ruling over Brits when it comes to cannabis and cocaine use. Comparison with the most recent British Crime Survey demonstrates that although the yoof of Britain are just as deep into illicit substances, the elderly have a long way to catch up.... [more]

MeFi post: Beasties Boy Made Good
Adam Yauch was actually first credited as director for Awesome; I Fuckin' Shot That! (although the tagline was "Finally, Hörnblowér is taking back what's his.").

The real MCA wouldn't have made that mistake. Unless it's deliberate, to throw us off the scent of MeFi's first celebrity self-linker.

MeFi post: But it needs it, Kramer! It needs it bad!
Are most people unaware of how far they can get on the reserve tank?

I have a Smart which isn't in the TankOnEmpty database. It has exactly 5 litres of fuel in reserve, which gets me about 50 miles down the motorway, as long as traffic is flowing freely. I've twice run it out completely, which didn't seem to do it any harm.

MeFi post: Hive-minded
Is it just me, or have top bars suddenly become the fixies of beekeeping?

I also get the feeling that it's deliberately luddite. I have english National hives, and to my mind they're simple, easy to inspect, light to handle, and good producers of honey. I'm not sure I can see any real advantages to a topbar hive.

MeFi post: The major urban infrastructure that smelt it, dealt it
I hadn't noticed it at all during the week. However having read this post, I'm now experiencing (probably) an olfactory hallucination of a manure smell in my sitting room. I'm going to take a bath until I'm smelling correctly again.

MeFi post: My fear of heights is now fear of flash video
I also went to the Camino del Rey in 2001, intending to walk the whole thing.

I turned up without ropes, harnessess, carabiners, or in fact any climbing ability or knowledge. I got a little way beyond the first enormous spiky fence with a terrifying warning sign. I decided sensibly not to try and jump the first large gap, between two wobbly sections of concrete, 50ft above a raging torrent of whitewater. In retrospect it's not something I regret wussing out of.

Also for my money, the Mt Hua Shan Trail doesn't look quite as terrifying as the arête of the Vallée Blanche. It's a 2m wide, 100m long snow ridge, with the path tramped into slippery ice by the passage of hundreds of people wearing ski boots. It's a 2600m drop to the left, and about 800m to the right. If you want to ski the Vallée Blanche, you have to go down it first.

MeFi post: "World's Greatest Music Collection" being auctioned
This is so sad. He's only asking $1 per album, with another 300K cd's thrown in as a freebie

No massed produced items bought indiscriminately will ever be worth a whole lot of money. This is no sadder than huge worthless collections of Beanie Babies or Star Wars toys. He's clearly straddling the border of obsession and mental illness. If this was really about preserving music he'd be selling off the duplicates in order to pay for digitisation of all the vinyl and 8-tracks.

MeFi post: The island where eye color can kill you.
Cortex's reasoning above lays out the logic of it exactly.

They can't kill themselves without the traveller to start their simultaneous induction process. Imagine being a blue eyed person on the island. You spend each and every day wondering if there are 99 or 100 blue eyed people. You never get a date to refer back to 99 or 100 days ago, when everyone could synchronise their logical processes. You have to wonder though how the islanders ever got through their first 99... [more]

And Kowalski, you must be an academic, because you don't seem to have the slightest insight about the motivations of the overwhelming majority of physicians.

This is undeservedly patronising. All doctors should be trying to be doing the best for their patients, and that means relying on best evidence, not anecdote.

If someone chooses to forego treatment for prostate cancer that's their decision, but to not even check... [more]

Here are your starters in the reasonable debate:
1. Aren't dwarves / small people able to decide for themselves whether they should participate in dwarf tossing? See HC Mabuse's comment above.
2. Should places / peoples with culturally sanctioned traditions that clash with modern notions of animal cruelty be allowed to continue them in a closely regulated way?
3. Is any "humorous" representation of such activities a legitimate topic for marketing?

Could a song called We're All Going to Die really become the UK Christmas number one single? In both 2005 and 2006 the UK Christmas number one was the winner of the X-Factor. This year the fight is on to reclaim Christmas for real music. Led by Colin Murray, the nations' pop cultural anti-establishmentarians are... [more]

Although I'm 100% with Goldacre on this one, Winterson's final paragraph makes a lot of sense:

I would like to see homeopathy better regulated. I would like to see the Society of Homeopaths engaging with its critics, as well as initiating more research. There will always be rogue homeopaths and bad homeopaths, but that is true of any profession. Above all we should be careful of dismissing the testimony of millions who say the remedies have worked for them.... [more]

I'm way way late in this crazy thread, but I claim expertise on the topic. I just had a study published about female ejaculation, and I've written a text book chapter on female genital cosmetic surgery. kavasa, "plain old writing" is not enough for a great paper. Sure there are a lot people sending papers for peer review with an utterly inadequate basic command of written english, but people who consistently write great papers are actually great writers, not just good proof readers. It's analagous to thinking that Strunk & White is a really good book for learning to write well, when really it's only a good guide to not writing badly.
