I think it really rather base to post something like this.

I think it's rather base, too.

...because a hex is a curse, you see, and effing an blinding is cursing, and F is the last digit of hexadecimal....oh, fine, fine, it wasn't funny. I'll stick to base 2 humour.

I could do 1, 4 or 5...the Brickhouse is good, yes. Way, way better than Earls. Plus, if we want to eat food, there's a really great vegetarian restaurant (Radha) in the same building.

MeTa post: Your thoughts on current and future changes to make Metafilter more woman friendly
Nthing singular "they" as the way to go - it's not perfect, but so much less clunky than s/he or she/he, and doesn't draw attention to itself unnecessarlly like she or he by themselves might. As for the idea that trying to de-gender language is comparable to Newspeak - well, yes, it is, in a way. The idea of Newspeak is to make counter governmental or revolutionary thought impossible by controlling language, but I don't see the disadvantage to changing language to make expressing... [more]

You're being a poseur and it's good for your soul to get called on it. Suck it up.

This is true. Unfortunately, it's bad for the soul to be the caller. Accusatory soul-enrichment is a zero-sum-game.

That's what I feel to be true, anyway, which I expect makes me a neuroscientist.

I'd guess the writer is English-English, TPS, given her use of "mate" for "friend" and "us" to mean "myself". Your point still stands, though.

MeTa post: LOLcrap!
The thing that bothers me most about LOLCATS is the way they're redefining our collective image of cats as aloof, intelligent, and inscrutably feline creatures (see Old Possum's book of Practical Cats, The Cat Who Walked By Himself, Edward Gorey, and so on ) as moronic cheesburger seeking comedy illiterates. The thing that bothers me the second most is that no-one has, as yet, successfully combined the images from the aforementioned interpretations of cat... [more]

Last night I had a dream where I was this total chick-magnet

But, Greg, the much-less-often-used (or possibly NEVER) used interpretation of chick-magnet, that being the baby-bird-attractor, is pretty much the one you INSTANTLY leapt to in the case of Ralph's Viking.

Seriously, he means he dreams of being a Viking, and that's that. Although my interpretation of the word is now forever fuzzy and random after that thread, and the ensuing pub arguments.

MeTa post: wendell!
Seriously, we should stop with the in-jokes. Or at least the not very good ones.

I mean, yes, Wendell is an anagram of end well, certainly, which is clever, and certainly worth a couple of repetitions, maybe - but the hundreds of times it's been repeated?

I'm just asking for a little creativity here, people. It really bugs me when nerds, in place of humor, just parrot stock phrases. You've got to think for yourselves! You're all individuals!

I can do Whistler, Baker or Banff, on snowboard or skis. I live in Vancouver, so the Whistler day/weekend trip's the easiest for me. It's sunny enough that I'm still denying I'm going to need regular snowsports action to cure me of the the tv-tuned-to-a-dead-channel horror of the Vancouver winters ( Gibson lives in Vancouver, and I never really understood the start of that book until going through a winter here ), but it would be great.

That example's just plain old eponysterical, in the sense that the juxtaposition of the name and the content is amusing - it doesn't have to be apt to be funny, does it? (if it does, you're all using it wrong. Yes, all of you. )

Anyway, that's what the Wiki says.

MeTa post: Strap on your running shoes!
I actually found the speed one more motivating....you can at least catch up towards the end if you're in the ballpark anyway, but with the distance you have to just be plugging away...Which, OK, I guess is the point. But I am a lazy man. Why don't we have a simultaneous 2 challenges for both speed and distance every month: presumably the runs can count for both?

OK, I'll give this one a go - I've actually been taking a running fitness and form class twice a week which, ironically, has been leaving me too sore to do any distance running outside of it, but I can squeeze in a 5K, especially as that's the distance from work to my house - handy!

Funnily, Christian anti-semites are mentioned n the very page you link to...

Jewish-American intellectuals abandoned liberalism for a series of demented alliances with the Christian (antisemitic) right ...

I can't do thursdays either, or mondays, usually.

So: Wednesday May 2nd? That gives people a week or so's notice.

The Drive could be good, actually, I rarely go there, and new places are a good thing. I've not been to any of those places bar Wazubee, but I'd happily try any of them.

No, most normal asses are actually 0.001 SI ass. The normal usage of "an assload" is similar to the quotidian usage of "calorie" in this respect - really you mean a kiloassload, but to point it out in polite conversation is considered rude and pedantic.
