Ask post: Buying a Nintendo DS. Or am I?
I would recommend Clubhouse Games and Crosswords DS. Picross and Meteos are very puzzle-like but a lot of fun. Zelda - Phantom Hourglass is great if you're into that sort of thing.

Another DS lite recommendation, don't bother with the original.

Ask post: Stag and Doe
I've gone to a few family ones out of sheer obligation, but I will never attend one of these again. They're just pure money-grabbers and I always feel embarrassed for the people who are throwing them.

Awful way to feel about family, but it's true. The stag and doe term is definitely southern Ontario, but they're common in a lot of places (I've heard of similar events in the UK, northeastern US, and other areas of Canada).

Ick.

Ask post: Which part of the Bruce Trail is not to be missed?
I used to work for the Bruce Trail (years ago) and I did a number of hikes along it and, to be honest, they're all good (they have 40 recommended ones on their site). The association works very hard to ensure that the trail is maintained and to allow it to return to it's natural state (as best it can).

They publish a reference guide that can usually be found at local bookstores or MEC. The guide lists B&B's along the trail as well as maps and more. It's only $24.95.... [more]

Ask post: Where should I go dancing in Toronto?
Highly recommend Shake a Tail (main site is currently down for maintenance -- here's a blog post about it).

60's, 70's rock/disco. Excellent vibe, very laid back and the right age group. A little scenester-ish, but they're good people. It's not right downtown, but it's at Clinton's Tavern which is right on the Bloor/Danforth subway line (at Christie station).... [more]

Freshwood Grill is pretty decent as well. Never tried their milkshakes (as I don't drink milk) but their burgers are pretty good. The one on Ronces just underwent a renovation so it's patio is pretty nice. Perfect for a weekend walkabout on a nice summer day. Sangria's not bad either.

So, you eat vegetables, dairy, eggs and seafood? And you're having difficulties staying away from other types of meat? Seriously?

Why not branch out into some other dietary staples. Indian/Thai comes to mind since a large percentage of their diets subsist entirely on your dietary choices. My personal favourite cookbooks for quick/easy and quite inspiring are the following (they're vegan, but quite good nonetheless):

It's very popular. I use it for everything now. Not sure when it happened, but it looks like people in the city use it for everything now.

Ask post: But I don't want to learn .NET!
You can take an older ntwdblib.dll from a SQL 2000. if you're using IIS, you simply setup the site to run as a user with the necessary access to the database (you can do this with Apache as well, run the service as the user) and set mssql.secure_connection to "on" (1).

Run all my sites this way and it works fine.

In order to change the permissions recursively on the volume you have to ensure that you are the owner on all the files and folders. If you're not, you can force ownership doing the following:

1. Right click volume and select properties
2. Select the Security tab
3. Click Advanced
4. Select the Owner tab
5. Click Edit (probably have to accept a UAC dialog at this point)
6. Either select an owner in the... [more]

You might want to check out Educause. it is primarily for IT issues affecting higher education but a lot of the content could easily be translated into non-profit areas. There are a variety of listservs and forums covering everything from identity management to web development which are largely geared towards IT management.

You can use group policy to restrict their access to the services MMC and the task manager, I believe there is an option in the client install to not display in the system tray as well.

Granted, you could still kill the service through the command line, so use group policy to disable that. Also, if you're simply preventing browsing to certain sites then they can easily workaround the proxy by removing it in IE so use group policy to restrict the ability to manage IE... [more]

Ask post: Separate checks, please
This is one thing I noticed when I travelled through Texas last year. Almost every restaurant asked us if we wanted separate checks (there were three of us) prior to taking our order. It was a small detail, but it was incredibly thoughtful and it is something I wish more restaurants would do.

Ask post: Where to go for dinner with a vegan?
Fressen is good for all out vegan/vegetarian food. If you want a nice little restaurant that has a good mixture for both non-vegan/vegetarian and vegan/vegetarian alike then I highly recommend Utopia on college. It's a fairly small place, but the food and service is quite good. After, there are a tonne of places that you can get drinks.

Ask post: Is there a program out there that will turn on my computer for me?
Only way to do it is in the BIOS. It needs to either support an automated power on setting or, failing that, Wake-On-Lan which would require a specific packet sent to the machine to wake it up.

I'd be surprised if the BIOS didn't support scheduled power on. Set it for 6am.

Ask post: money troubles
You definitely need some assistance. Have you tried contacting any credit counsellors in your area? Most major cities have not-for-profit credit services that will help you consolidate loans (which will reduce the amount of interest you're accumulating each month) and help you create a budget. You could try to setup an appointment and coax your husband into going along. Explain that if you get your financial situation in order, he'll have more cash to spend on extra-curricular activities (as... [more]

Ask post: possibly pay my credit card!
I doubt it. As ian1977 said, it's the routing numbers on the checking account that makes this possible. Most online banking sites have automated transfer schedules. Time a transfer to coincide with your automated payment (or say, a few hours after) to have it pushed over to your credit card. That way, you never actually see the cash.

Also, I'm not sure what the latest supported version of the 1.3.x branch on the RedHat network, but 1.3.41 is the latest version. Might want to check on that as well.

Yes, you can find a nice 1 bdrm in all the areas you listed for less than $1100. It just requires some patience and persistence. Keep in mind that craigslist is being scoured by like-minded individuals regularly (myself included) so the key is to jump on promising listings immediately.

This is one of those internal monologues that could get you in a lot of trouble. You've immediately moved from statistics to assumptions (with a healthy negative twist) which is simply a recipe for disaster.

Ask post: ... but you're beautiful inside...
Looks are subjective. There is no way to receive "unbiased confirmation" as you will undoubtably be attractive to some and unattractive to others.

This applies equally as well in the so-called blind experiments online because it is assumed that the person posting their pictures is metering the results. Also, despite the anonymous "fucktard" theory (wherein internet + anonymity = fucktard) most people who participate will generally rate on the higher... [more]

Ask post: Why would a computer squeal?
Hopefully it's just a fan but a "scream" is usually the hard drive. Sounds like one of the spinning platters is grating against the casing. Unfortunately, it is more common than you think and it means your drive is about to go.

To be on the safe side, backup everything important right now. A simple test would be to go into your power management options and lower the hard drive spin down time to a minute and let the computer idle. If the sound goes away after... [more]

I alwas promote BlackBerry's on here. They're the tried and true for a reason, they just work. The BlackBerry curve is best-of-breed IMO (now, if Sprint or Verizon would pick it up, that would even better).

Religion is a personal choice. Forcing you to go to church against your wishes for the sake of the children is sending a stronger message that your personal beliefs are not to be valued. I'm not sure if the "both parents in" mentality is a good one. There will be a lot more areas that you will disagree on throughout yours (and their) lives. Tell your GF to get used to it or move on.

The only thing I'll contribute is that "feeling pregnant" does not indicate anything that early in a potential pregnancy. Since you're trying to get pregnant, perception will play a lot of funny tricks that will make you both see signs everywhere. Take the 2 weeks and take a few pregnancy tests. If they turn out positive then either find a second opinion or go back to your doctor.

Let your boss know. Unless you fudged your application and/or interview they may already be aware of your inexperience. This does not necessarily make for a bad situation as there may be something else about you that they find more appealing.

If you make them aware of your inexperience it is nothing that a few books, courses, or simply some free time throughout the day couldn't solve. Companies are becoming much more receptive to this stuff since they realize that... [more]
