Ask post: WHOIS that? It's nobody...
One other consideration: isn't there a way of looking up the previous registrants of a domain name? I'm sure I've seen a 'historical WHOIS' service somewhere before. This means that, even if you do transfer the registration to another individual, your original registration details may still show up with a historical search.

Ask post: Is BT blocking sites on me?
Same problem - BT Broadband. A traceroute on MT's IP (64.207.129.35) gets as far as ukcore.bt.net and then times out. Problem only started a couple of hours ago - I tested it when I read this post earlier this evening and all was fine.

There's nothing on the DSL Reports UK forum about it, at first glance.

Ask post: I miss my monkey
My Greasemonkey got corrupted a few months ago, and uninstalling and reinstalling didn't help. Once I'd manually deleted the entries in about:config (search for 'monkey') it reinstalled perfectly.

Vogon are the big daddy of UK data recovery experts - they certainly aren't cheap but a client recently used them to recover data from a fire-damaged (!) drive and were very impressed.

Ask post: Vista Permissions?
Wasn't there a bug in XP where a malformed divx .avi file would become undeletable? Seem to remember that something like shmedia.dll would try to read the file, hang and keep it locked. Perhaps that bug is also present in Vista.

Ask post: Building a Home Theatre PC
The problem is that you're trying to do two conflicting things with this machine.

A HTPC should be as small and quiet as possible: there's nothing more annoying that trying to watch a film at low volume and having the sound drowned out by the noise of the fans. But, you also want a gaming machine with decent framerates which usually requires a large-ish graphics card with whiny fans. If it were me, I'd concentrate on making the PC as quiet as possible and buy an Xbox... [more]

Seconding what the others have said about unreliability: it may work now but fail unexpecedly in the future. If it's needed for police work, I'd be wary about relying on it.

Ask post: Is there any reason for me to break the bank for the 2.4GHz intel c2duo macbook pro?
A point of reference: I'm using a previous-model C2D MBP: 2.16GHz, 2GB RAM. I'm currently running Ps, Ai & Dw, plus 7/8 smaller apps including 1 which requires Rosetta. Memory usage is currently 1.92GB and the disc is swapping like mad whenever I switch apps.

My advice would be to try and live with 2GB but keep the upgrade in mind - you may need it sooner than you think. And, yeah, forget about the 2.4GHz - you won't notice the boost at all.

Ask post: How to save all cached pages for a particular domain?
Warrick is a command-line utility for reconstructing or recovering a website when a back-up is not available. Warrick will search the Internet Archive, Google, MSN, and Yahoo for stored pages and images and will save them to your filesystem.

I've been using Billable for the past few months - it's pretty basic (no CRM, just a basic directory of clients) but that's a very appealing factor to me. I send out <10 invoices a month, though, so your needs may differ. Anyway, there's a free trial available.

Ask post: Is there a slideshow program that supports imported Flash templates?
Why not get your developers to write a Flash slideshow which loads external images specified in an XML file? Then you'll just need to drop some pictures into a directory and edit an XML document. You may even be able to get the actionscript to read in the contents of the whole directory - no XML editing required.
posted to Ask Metafilter by blag at 12:52 PM on June 5, 2007
A quick Google came up with this Flash slideshow which automatically displays the contents of an 'images' directory. There's an included PHP script which gathers the information on each image - no XML editing needed. I've checked over the source .fla and it looks pretty straightforward - it should be easy for your guys to customise. They probably won't have to mess with the Actionscript at all, just add a new layer containing the template. Hope this helps.... [more]

Ask post: Three Mac questions
frijole writes "The WD MyBook drives in large sizes, eg: 1TB and above, are 2 HDs inside. I've read that you can set them to mirror instead of striping (the default)."

I can confirm this - I've got a 1TB WD MyBook set up in what is effectively RAID1. They're also meant to be user-serviceable - the cases are apparently easy to get into to replace drives though I haven't tried this. The only problem is that the internal fan is surprisingly... [more]

I also had a similar problem - GM's first install screwed up and left monkey crap in my config which prevented me from installing it again. Visiting about:config and deleting all entries related to GM (searching for "greasemonkey" was quickest) did the trick.

Ask post: OSX Mail ate my homework.
Another data point: if I use Mail to send an attachment to a particular (Windows, Outlook-using) company then I have to make sure that I drop the attachments onto the end of the email. If I drag-and-drop an attachment into the middle of the email, the part of the mail following the attachment gets truncated. Very frustrating.

Ask post: Memory leaks, like the corners of my Flash
Despite what emptyinside has written, I really do think that Flash is currently the best medium for transmitting video over the web. However, in this situation, I think you need to do a bit of client management...

640x480 30fps video is NOT suitable for distribution via the web. As you've found, it will crash browsers, hog memory and soak up bandwidth. Not to mention the fact that even on a broadband connection the viewing experience will still be jerkier than Michael J... [more]

Ask post: Will dimmer switches dim LEDs?
Not an answer, but be careful: a friend replaced the 8 halogen bulbs in his hallway for LED equivalents. They suck - they are noticably less bright and the light is very directional, leaving pools of light on the floor. Imagine shining a Maglite from your ceiling. I'd strongly advise you to try one bulb first, before replacing the whole lot.

Ask post: Seeking real Java software
Remember that the version of Java on your phone isn't 'real' Java in the desktop sense. It's a stripped-down version called J2ME which places a lot of restrictions on what actions you can perform.

For reasons of security, J2ME apps run in a 'sandbox' which isolates them from the rest of the phone. It is very difficult to access, for example, the phone's internal functions (camera, phonebook etc.) from within a Java app. Accessing the filesystem is also a very difficult... [more]
