Boing Boing Finds 21st Century Trotsky?
Seriously, I've about had it with the entire culture of hip-artists who are waving a bunch of lawyers around while crowing about (and giving lectures about) how radical they are. Furthermore, I've had it with their yes men.
The free culture pioneers of the 1990s are turning into the suburban householders of the oughts, and their self deception about these facts absolutely disgusts me.
No need to be a lifestyle anarchist, that doesn't work either.... [more]

Teresa, Mark, Cory:
Seriously, if you were writing or editing a novel about this, about a group of people like the boingers faced with a situation like the one you are in, and the novel-boingers decided to DELETE THE FUCKING POSTS and then NOT TELL ANYBODY and then DELETE COMMENTS AFTER THE FACT, your noses would wrinkle in consternation. That is not how those characters would act. It's how Holden Karnofsky would act, or, truly, scarily, how any of us with a lot of money... [more]

Crack Lung
I've already made a comment on this post in musical form (don't wish to self link, it's in my profile under Music), but let me just say she's gotten a lot of people into old school soul music, which is a Good Thing. Don't see it as a pop star thing, see it as a ravaged by the awesome power and melancholy of the blues thing, c.f. Billie Holiday and Janis Joplin.

Agreed, slimepuppy. The entire United Kingdom should thank her for infesting the top 40 stations with decent music instead of the utter shite that would be there in a Winehouse free world.

PLASTIC?
Okay, I am going to have to get my paws on this thing before I consider getting it. And maybe just get a used iphone 1 instead. Or a blackberry or something.

Also, don't forget that all your hippy foofiness-doings can turn into a prestigious job. I'm managing a big election campaign next year and working in a big cheese's office as a spin doctor this summer. I'm not a lawyer or a marketing consultant - I'm a political activist with 14 years experience. I thought I was eschewing the rat race, but here I am!

Moyers interviews Wright
I am a white Jewish origin person who sang in a black gospel choir in the fine gospel music city of Cleveland Ohio, for three years just before I moved to Scotland. This is a black choir and I was the only white member. It did more good things for my ear and voice (and, of course, my spirit( than anything else in my long musical life. So I am not wary of the black church.
The choir, which is about 30 years old now, has no home church and is led by the musical and... [more]

In re. moist:
Her lips were moist and inviting.
Moist, fresh slices of ham and creamy hardboiled eggs are essential for this salad.
Damp does NOT work here.

Habla Ingles or You Ain't Getting No Cheesesteak
I'm a US national, immigrant to the UK.
Did you guys know that before you get your indefinite leave to remain here, you have to take a Life in the UK test and pass an English Spoken as a Second Language exam if English isn't your first language?
The test is full of new labour propaganda and the £10 book you have to study has an intro, with smirking photo, by John Fucking Reid. Oh and Scotland is a total sideline on the test. And most UK citizens... [more]

Snark Kills.
Lets forget about the ones and zeros for a minute.
This man was getting criticized, in deep and personal ways. People were going around the confidentiality of his workplace, leaking internal memos, to make this criticism. The criticism was made in a way that he couldn't usefully respond to or influence. (c.f. Holden - even people who respond to the critics rarely change their minds).
Furthermore, these people (as a collective) had MORE POWER... [more]

as regards celebrities - I think that the image-conscious and intensely personal nature of celebrity certainly fuels the common drug abuse and mental breakdowns.

Artw, maybe he felt his family was better off without him.
Depression is a huge pit that warps your priorities. Have mercy and pity (remember it was Mercy and Pity that stayed Frodo's hand from killing Gollum! :))

I hope you folks with the contempt for the suicidal will take some time to give some support to the mentally ill and depressed, to help them on the road to recovery.

I suppose calling them tedious is a healthy way of distancing yourself from the way that they are feeling, so I won't take any offence at it. I'm sure that wiping shit off the incontinent dementia sufferer is tedious and unpleasant as well, but it's a necessary and important act for their dignity and survival. Thanks for supporting the mentally ill.

Lovelock to planet: Enjoy it, suckers!
You know what? This feels like wonderful news to me today, which I have spent powerfully wishing for death. Most of the time all my left-wing education/brainwashing/whatever would kick in here, but after seing the video of some US soldiers throwing a puppy off a cliff and having some clients want a complete re-design, this news really lifts my heart.
Don't worry I'll be back pushing the fucking rock tomorrow.

Let the best argument win
Every day, Dutton's posts on aldaily, long one of my favourites, get more annoyingly chock full of right wing apologia. Why do Ayaan Hirsi Ali's sophomoric, self indulgent articles get so much coverage, for instance?

Account of MRSA
I really, really hope that someone reaches the wife and talks to her about how this is NOT HER FAULT. It could have easily been another person, or Syn himself, who left the door closed. The important thing is the love and caring that she showed so clearly in the blog. She seemed full of pain and worry that this was her fault, even before he got very sick.

Yup. Strawmen.
It's extremely important and good that atheists are making the initial consciousness raising mumblings that presage the formation of a useful campaign. Not quite there yet, though.
The discussion of the ways atheists are discriminated against are useful - the strawmen and the championing of the Christopher Hitchens sort of atrocity-oglers are less so.

Growing up and living with Crohn's disease
My mother had Crohns, really bad. She was one of the first people to get a colostomy surgery in Canada - she got it at the age of ten. The disease destroyed her life and caused severe depression. I remember many times with IVs. She faced epilepsy and addiction to her pain medications as well, but raised four kids and lied to the age of 46, probably through sheer ferocious stubbornness (which I inherited).
It's a horrible, humiliating disease. My grandfather had it,... [more]

Serious Change: dress like you're going to the most important job interview of your life
a) Since the dawn of time, the hippies and smartly suited individuals have worked hand and hand. See the bevy of lawyers volunteering to do legal support for antiwar and campaigning cases, for example. Trade unions give us funding for the buses.
b) A demonstration has always been filled with what we now refer to as "hipsters." (Or is it that the hipsters avoid the protest? I can never remember.) But they serve the more important purpose of keeping a certain... [more]
