Ask post: Mac replacements for Windows software: Bonus points for open-source and/or freeware
thus will need to migrate stuff from my PC eventually
The above posters covered all the Mac alternatives so I'll just mention that you can run Windows via Parallels/Fusion for anything not up to par. For example, I prefer uTorrent to other Mac torrent clients so I just run that in Windows. With Parallels and Fusion, you can run them simultaneously and seamlessly with OSX.

Ask post: Pasta la vista, baby!
Long noodles have every practical production advantage. They're faster to make uniformly by hand, don't require multiple cuttings, dry faster, don't stick to each other (with cut pasta you have to use a lot of flour to keep it from sticking to itself), cook faster, and are more space-efficient for storage.

why not simply cut or break them before cooking?
Why bother if they can be eaten as is? Don't fix it if it ain't broke.

Ask post: Do burglars read AskMeFi?
In the toilet tank in a waterproof container.
Read this 2-part interview with a burglar. The toilet tank is one of the first places they look because homeowners think a burglar wouldn't look there.

Places like picture frames and kitty litter boxes don't work well because burglars are going to grab anything of value and trashing the place as they go. So the painting along with the money will be stolen to be sold and... [more]

Ask post: Death Defying Oven Cleaning
It will create a very noticeable odor because it's baking everything inside for many hours at 900 degrees until it's all turned to ash. The smell won't kill you but it will be pretty hard to bear. If you think about what it would smell like if you took all your food and threw it into a bonfire, that's essentially what's going on. It shouldn't stink up your clothes, couch, and bed but you may want to open the door and window and hang out nearby for the afternoon.

Ask post: Satisfaction with Mechanical Turk work?
I did a search for podcast transcription and noticed this company, CastingWords, used an interesting process. They make full use of Turk as a multi-pass system where a podcast would go through multiple steps of initial transcription, grading, then improvement with a slight bump in the payment at each pass. So the initial transcription HIT would be offered at say, $0.80, then a grading HIT would be offered at $0.07 to grade the transcription on a scale of 1-8, then improvement HITs would be... [more]

Ask post: Upgrading to 64 bit Vista?
You have to do a custom install on top of the 32-bit XP to use the upgrade license. However there is no upgrade installation path which means you have to backup your XP settings elsewhere, reboot into the 64-bit Vista DVD, install it off the DVD, then migrate your files back from backup. Instructions here.

novice like myself
If you're a novice, why are you installing 64-bit Vista? Unless you're running 64-bit programs and running them hard, you're not going to get much benefit out of it. Even in games and graphics programs, the benchmarks show similar or barely better results. Kind of weak compared to having to deal with lack of 64-bit drivers and programs.

Ask post: To buy or not to buy; apple forces consumer to make decisions
That Intel chip on the horizon that Bunglegirl linked to is for the next-generation processor, likely the Nehalem which isn't expected to be widely available until mid/late 2009.

The current generation Montevina chipset debuted in actual laptops today. Lenovo has it in their X200 laptop which goes on sale August 5. I can't imagine Apple would let Lenovo beat them to the punch so they should be updating the MacBook and MacBook Pro to the Montevina chipset around the same... [more]

Ask post: How much is that snowboard in the window? The one with the beautiful...er...sticker?
I recommend splitting the item into 1) board+case and 2) boots. This way you're opening up the auction items to people who already have boots but just want/fit the board (#1) or just want/fit the boots (#2) in addition to those who are just starting out want both.

People do but usually only high-end boards. At the lower end of the market, it's better just to buy a new board. New boards are released... [more]

Ask post: My fingers are too big for those little buttons...
I only button the sleeve buttons and not the wrist buttons for that slight "French cuff" look. It's my style quirk along with occasional loud socks. If your shirts and suits have well-fitting sleeves, it shouldn't be that noticeable (except by people who specifically notice these nuances).

Ask post: Long sleeve shirts for a small guy
Any store that sells shirts in exact measurements (ie. numbers instead of S, M, L, XL) will have someone with a tape measure to measure you. I haven't been to Sears in ages but if the online store is any indication, then they should have these shirts. Ask to try "fitted shirts" first which will be less box-shaped and more contoured to your body. Don't be afraid to try shirts in every brand. Every designer uses a slightly different shape for their shirts so try them all on until you... [more]

Ask post: Chuck Taylor durability techniques?
You could try the Blackspot Sneakers which are supposed to be better made. Though at $88, you could buy two pairs of Chucks and alternate which would probably last just as long. The simple fact is that since Nike took over, the materials and construction are crap and there's really no way to get around that other than buying more pairs and alternating.

Processor and HD are fine. Bump RAM up to 4GB.

What kind of video card? Do you have dedicated video or using the onboard GPU? If the latter, get a dedicated modern video card.

Ask post: We will tattoo, we must tattoo!
Futura in a medium or book font. Maybe book italic if you want it to look a bit more like spoken text. It was designed by a German typographer, Paul Renner, in 1927, just three years before Hilbert's speech. Futura is a modern, geometric sans-serif derived from simple geometric forms with constant stroke width. I think that would have appealed to a mathematician whose work was in geometry. And like Hilbert's work, Futura had significant influence on future geometric typefaces and continues to be... [more]

It seems like you have a pretty casual workplace and personal style so I wouldn't worry about dressing up too much. Instead focus on below the belt. Many guys worry so much about what they look like at the eye level that they fail to think about what they look like below the waist so doing it right in the lower half is actually more noticeable.
