Minimalist sort of lyrical composition about playing with a band. An attempt at a sort of pseudo-wall of sound composition of Apple Loops behind it.

Only the Very Greatest Hits
It's an album! Although the greatness and "hit" status may exist only in my own mind. Buy a digital download, or preview the whole thing online for free. Many songs of the day (to revisit a prior
Project as well as an
ongoing effort) are represented.

Chat Noir
A little Friday Flash fun to polish off the week - couldn't be easier: the cat will try to escape off the board. Block it by clicking on circles -it can't cross the dark ones. (via del.icio.us)

Here we go again: partial lyric, name the song. The phrase "I'm a cyberspace commuter" is repeated several times. The chorus goes something like "ooh-ooh then I see you smile, and everything's fine... Ooh-ooh then I look at the sky and I see the sun shine"

Allow me to nerd out briefly on behalf of one of our own. Say, Mr. William "I invented cyberspace" Gibson, what were you listening to while writing your new bestseller
Spook Country?
Why, I was listening to

You're Gonna Miss Me
is playing in a few theaters this summer. The documentary explores the life of
Roky Erickson, former frontman for the seminal psychedelic rock group The 13th Floor Elevators, an influential musician who's life and career has been marred by mental illness. But in recent years his life has been characterized by drastically improved health and an increasingly active recording and performance career. (Via Chicago Public Radio's
Sound Opinions, see footnotes 5 & 6).

Ana Voog is spending the week nude online (NSFW, duh).
Former leader of the long-standing Minneapolis Pop-Rock band
The Blue Up? Rachel Olson reinvented herself as Ana Voog and became one of the first to put herself under near constant home surveillance online with her
Anacam (wacky flash, NSFW). This August will mark her tenth anniversary online, making hers (by her own reckoning) the longest running home cam on the internet. To celebrate she's spending the week naked. Did I mention she's 35 weeks pregnant and planning to give birth online?

I just found out that the dystopian/futuristic movie
Children of Men is based on a novel by P.D. James. It made me think of the excellent short story
The Machine Stops by E.M. Forster. It made me wonder: are other examples of mainstream authors experimenting with speculative fiction?

This is you brain on F***ing Crazy: a 20 Year Retrospective of Text (NSFW text)
A couple of years back I started what was meant to be a lighthearted blog of absurdist essays on pop culture and celebrity. Four months later I seriously lost the plot on that, but the blog domain lived on and eventually became a large archive of my writings spanning two decades. I finally finished a comprehensive (if not terribly well organized) index of all of it, which I present as a retrospective exhibition. If the (unasterixed in its original situ) title does not make it sufficiently clear, I cuss a lot.

Another minimalist lyric from ancient history. About a girl who's reactions to me were not as warm as I would have liked. The lingering moment or two of Leonard Cohen is a recording artifact from recycling media. Ah, the four track days.

Another selection from my
RPM Challenge album. There were a couple lyrics I really wished I was a better musician when writing and this is one of them. My methodology did not encourage a melodic interface between the lyrics and the music.

Something from my
RPM Challenge album. Due to the methodology of its production, (read details
here) all the songs on the album are pretty rough, but I'm going to post a few of the more successful experiments. The songs on this album are all about one of my favorite topics, the end of the world.

Is it just me, or did my autoformatting buttons vanish with my last Firefox update (I assume this is the cause, as the two coincided)? If I have to start hand-coding hyperlinks again I will probably just go into an unresponsive fugue state instead.

Templar, Arizona
is hands down my favorite webcomic find of 2006. Creator
Spike (AKA Charlie Trotman) is one of the growing number of artists eschewing conventional approaches to the (notoriously lagging) alternative print market, but she's more persistent (and consistent) than most. Also worth noting is the experimental, dialogue-free
Sparkneedle (recently completed). The self described "wankery" of her Sims-illustrated fiction vehicle
Playing With Dolls? Maybe not so much.

the fairly secret song of the day blog
Secret no more? A number of years ago I started a daily lyric-writing project which eventually resulted in my writing 1,001 consecutive lyrics. I let it drift for a few years, then recently started up again, with a slightly more ambitious goal. Now I've decided to blog them, starting at the beginning and posting one per day. Most of these have never been seen before in any form. The long explanation of the project/blog is
here
I know it's very early in the blog's development, but I'm hoping my backlog of over 1,500 original lyrics (with new ones being added at an average of one per day) will make up the "significant" requirement. Incidentally, all the
songs I've posted on Mefi Music so far have featured lyrics from this project.

I noticed that the download icon in Mefi Music vanished when I logged out. Is this intentional (to cut down bandwidth demands)?
The dl links go to a straightforward .mp3 files, though, so I'm assuming that you could link to one of those (on your blog, say) and a non-member could download a song by clicking on the link. But would that be wrong?

I’ve been chronically underemployed since I graduated from college. At the moment I am at home with my infant son, which will be my primary employment probably for the next 2-3 years. I want to start preparing now to improve my career potential down the line. Right now I’m pursuing creative ambitions, but they aren’t necessarily practical and it seems sensible to keep an eye on the pragmatic.
