Greatest Americans
> No one has yet pointed out that some of the people on this list of "Greatest Americans" are not even, erm, American.
As I started reading the list, my first take was that it was satire... 3 of the first 7 fall into the category of "Great People From Other Countries Who Came to America".
Albert Einstein
A.G. Bell
Arnold Schwartzenegger
Scratch the great for Arnold though.

nice to know I can still be suprised.
The hit show Lost had a torture scene a few episodes back (bamboo under fingernails, administered by a former Iraqi soldier along with his new friend, the American doctor) . Apparently America is making a nice transition coming to grips with torture... a bit of prime time depiction does a lot to dull the senses.

Winer slams new Google toolbar feature
With all this talk about choice, (again) why not have a meta tag available for authors so that they can choose not to take part in this feature?
It is not the author's choice how I render the content for my own viewing. The web was designed that way for good reasons. If you don't like it, publish in a less-web friendly, proprietary medium such as PDF, Flash, or Word.
That said, it is often useful for to allow the author to... [more]

How to Cut
I'm surprised by how many chefs on TV don't seem to know the "keep the root on" trick for cutting onions and garlic. I've even read cooking books with sections on knife skills that show inferior approaches. Odd. How does a simple, commonly needed best practice like this not propagate absolutely everywhere?

This post is not very PC
I wonder if moving from concrete items to "services" and "consulting" is really a smart business move.
They have already made that move and it seems to be working well for them. Half of IBM's 300,000 employees are now in the services business.

Thank god it wasn't Cherry
Terry Fox, on the other hand, is terribly overrated.
Right, he sure flogged that tired old "inspirational, one-legged, guy running hundreds of miles across the country for cancer research" schtick.

Stick it on the fridge
Wasn't magnetic poetry one of the first dozen or so Java applets on the 'net? Now DHTML, bookmarklets, etc. It's good to see innovation is alive and well on web. Imagine 10 more years from now... Virtual Reality magnetic poetry!

Evolutionism
By the way, a question for non-USans: is this "Creation Science" thing half as big over there? Is there any serious movement to teach it in secular schools?
No. I think for most people outside of the US, even seeing this issue vehemently argued against by intelligent people seems bizarre (how often does this come up on Mefi!?!?).
It is sort of like walking into a graduate level physics class and seeing a bunch of... [more]

Bigger Food = Less Hunger
How can they be objective about a "typical" portion 20 years ago
They can't. Assuming this is even a meaninful metric in the first place. I always shudder when I see a site such as this resorting to such silly, non-scientific techniques to convince people. Not saying you shouldn't watch the type of food you eat and the portions you imbibe, but c'mon...
