Ask post: Time optimization?
In my experience you just start rearranging priorities. I live alone and lurk alone and generally when not completely lazy get a lot of my own projects done despite my full time job. And getting those projects done IS my number one priority. I work a few nights a week (sleeping less) and devote my weekends to them. I generally gravitate towards quick dinner and a drink after work than hangouts that would suck a whole evening up.

I have no clue how you would do this... [more]

Ask post: A list of independent and underground comics publishers
I would go to a good indie comics store and look for things in a similar niche and write to the publisher, or like jamaro said go to APE. Put together a mini and hand it out!

Also, maybe apply for a Xeric grant to cover printing costs? Jason Little put up a few tips about applying for that.

Ask post: Should I upgrade to a fancy Intuos tablet from my Graphire4?
Hey Meg! the Intuos is what I use and it's a big difference, the Graphire doesn't have the sensitivity levels to do more painterly or delicate things (in my opinion), and it's worth the dough, you can write it off on your taxes and mine NEVER broke! Had it for 7 years going on 8 now!

Ask post: Home again, home again... sort of.
hey that's my neighborhood! I shop at two small grocery places(the only real lack in the neighborhood) one is Rich's Deli at umm Western and Augusta? It's bigger inside than it looks! And the other is that Fruit and Produce joint on Chicago and Western. And you are still close to the warm embrace of the Hideout on Elston and Wabansia for good music and drinks (www.hideoutchicago.com), sushi at Coast is pretty good, that Blue Fin place is a bit pricey but nice, and there is a place on... Ask post: Haircut in Chicago
i have been looking for that kind of place, but ya know Art and Science does a good job. Their people are pretty well versed and if you tell them your hair's habit (mine, straight as hell and very style resistant) they will work with you!

Ask post: why do you wear makeup?
i wear makeup (pink eyeshadow and lipstick) because I find the burst of color to be fun. I get very bored with my face so I like to paint it up. I've always used makeup in a completely obvious way too, i really hate "natural" makeup on me as I feel it missed the point.

Ask post: Albany Park == good?
Albany Park was my favorite neighborhood to live in Chicago. I'm down in Wicker Park/Bucktown/Ukranian Village-ish digs now, but if I didn't love walking the few blocks to work I'd move back in a second!

Wonderful lebonese pastry shops, korean grocers, andy's fruit ranch, davis theatre, billiard halls, the tiny magic shop on lawrence, weirdo karoake bars, the greek gin rummy nuts, it's a wonderful neighborhood in my opinion. As far as coffee shops, sadly you have... [more]

Ask post: What to gift?
When I was a 16 year old girl, I loved gift certificates! You can get what you want and shop with your friends! Even if it feels a little impersonal, I wouldn't axe them from the list of possibilities!

Ask post: Where can one find fashionable items (jeans, shirts, etc) for oversized folks?
While I agree that some styles simply do not look good on fat folk, I also really empathize with trying to find non-boring shit.

A friend of mine recommends this webstore

And another friend of mine has a great boutique in Chicago called Vive La Femme where she stocks a lot of what you'd find in normal boutiques. She also has gotten many designers to extend their size range.

Good luck on getting some new clothes.... [more]

Ask post: What proof exists that Japanese soldiers bayonetted babies at Nanking?
not to derail, But I also read Iris Chang's book and wondered if somehow the mental weight of researching such terrible events led to her recent suicide.

Did anyone else feel the same?

Ask post: Behind the Scenes at the Supermarket
I once worked at a SavOn Drugstore in Vegas, which is a popular retirement city for crazy old women. We had this one lady come in 10 minutes before closing who proceeded to very slowly fill two whole goddamn shopping carts. We stayed open and waited for her to finish, and when she finally pulled up to my cashier, she whipped out one of those coupon portfolio things, which would have been fine but they were expired coupons for items that were not in her cart. She was very insistent that if... [more]

Ask post: Find me the superbestest wallet ever!
This is simply the best wallet/clutch I have ever owned. Fits everything and is well organized, plus by sliding your id in the interior slot you can easily flash it at bars and such. Damn good wallet, functional clutch, great colors...damn do I love this thing. I have it in bronze, my friend has the red.

Ask post: Why does Novak walk?
rdr - What mkulta said, plus a classic case of portraying a man as a sort of milksop, they did this with Clinton and Kerry as well. It's a strategy where you make it seem like *gasp* your wife has undue influence over your professional activities, which might seem unseemly but is most likely not uncommon( although not in the "puppetmastery" way they spin it. And in this case it's all apparently untrue, his wife doesn't seemed to have used her CIA pull to get his the job.... [more]

Ask post: YAMCD
I'll recommend the whole of The Handsome Family's catalog. Rennie Spark's is heavily influence by traditional ballad forms which are highly narrative, thus most of their songs are beautiful strange stories that any fan of Johnny Cash would highly enjoy. She also has a book of short stories called "Evil" for sale on their website, it's exquisite!

Ask post: I can't talk right anymore.
My problem isn't truly having an accent, so much as having similar difficulties pronouncing words that would trouble my Korean speaking parents. It just is sort of an embarrassment for me, as I am plenty mistaken for foreign already.

Another thing is that when it's bad, it's mighty bad. Hard to understand bad. I have to be really tired or really drunk for this to happen though. Though since it has yet to fade, this may just be an odd very limited range regional... [more]

Ask post: Songs with Psychiatric Illness theme
Umm I'm not quite sure that either Barbara Allen (at least how I know it) or Knoxville Girl qualify as songs about psychiatric illnesses. But that may be my own special kind of nitpicking.

Anhow the Handsome Family has quite a few songs about mental illness (Brett Sparks is bipolar), "My Ghost" is the most dead on about the experience, Possibly the obsessive killer in "Arlene", Anorexia in "The Woman Downstairs", "Lake Geneva"... [more]

Ask post: How do you know you can mentally deal with pregnancy?
I am completely grossed out by the idea of growing a person inside of me, then expelling and interacting with it. I love kids but I don't see me ever being okay with being pregnant. Pregnant women sorta spook me too (self link sorry!) . So yeah, I feel ya driver.

Ask post: Phone Sex!
I had a friend who took a class which coaches people on how to be the bestest phone sexiest lady ever. I'm pretty sure she saw the ad in a local alternative weekly. Maybe your friend can go through on of those? In my opinion (I've had several friends in the sex industry) you can set up on your own, but for women it seems to be a more positive experience to work for a localized office, or a service that does relay. If she wants more info, she can probably check into the local dungeons.

Ask post: Can a carnivore become a vegetarian?
Giving up meat for someone with your eating habits will probably be difficult, but not impossible. As long as you're not making pre-packaged veggie products the base of your diet, any decent grocery with fresh produce and beans and grains will do right by you. I'd suggest strolling through the many online veggie recipe sites online, or maybe picking up a book with some nutrition tips too. Many friends of mine who've made the switch from a meat-heavy diet had a rough transition because they... [more]

Ask post: relationship do's and dont's
Don't rely on knowing (and milking) every single stinking detail and nuance of their life and daily goings on as a reassurance and measurement of how well you know the person and what they're thinking.

That's not meant to come across bitter, I've just met a lot of people who seem to feel this way.

Hmm, well I know it sounds cliche but I find it true that you look best when you feel best. It's important for you to find a "look" that feels good to you. I've never been a clothes person but recently have been finding more and more things I like, so I'm dressier now than I was 5 years ago, but equally as comfortable.
